They represent a migration that turns conventional wisdom on its head. Urban planners have until now proceeded on the assumption that retiring baby boomers will downsize to a high-rise and spend their days lapping lattes and taking the streetcar to the art museum.
A lot of them will. But new data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture says baby boomers will head to the country in big numbers, in the Northwest changing the face of rural Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
And it's not just because the 83 million boomer generation is the largest in U.S. history and all of their movements are out-sized. Demographers are talking about a genuine "deconcentration" of population near metro centers. Urban areas will see a net loss of people age 55 to 75, while in non-metro areas that age group will increase by 1.6 million nationally during the next 10 years.
Migrating boomers will have an especially deep impact on small towns and rural counties on the outer ring of Oregon's metro areas. If you're the economic development director of a small town in a scenic setting, researchers say, you'd be better off developing golf courses and bike trails than competing with every other city to lure the next big manufacturing plant. While you're at it, make sure your medical facilities are up to date.

Easier said than done.
The “Vermoting” of the rural Pacific Northwest?
I’d rather they stayed in the city. They move to my tiny town and aren’t happy so they try to bring the city with them.
There goes the neighborhood....
Not ready to accept this with the suspicion that the powers that be today really want gas prices to jump to $10/gallon or more, thus a boon to cities and a bust to rural towns. Their agenda is crap-n-trade, no drilling onshore or offshore, no more nuke plants, decimate coal... we’ll all be living in those city high rises in short order.
Buy 2 acres for $10K, put a Katrina Cottage on it and get by on Social Security.
You’re screwed.
Selfish pricks.
They’re sure to bring their failed liberal thinking to the farmlands and screw up the red rural areas. Liberals destroy everything they touch.
*insert your string of cuss words here*
Nooooo. I don’t want them out here. Bunch of whiny babies, complaining that we don’t have this and we don’t have that.
Why the heck did you move here then? Let me guess, so you could cash out the only savings you had, which was your house. Now you can buy cheaper out here, pay off your credit card debt with the difference and try to live more cheaply out here in the boonies.
It’s not just the oldsters clearing out of urban areas.
Democrats and other lefties are turning cities into holding pens for the moocher class with spiraling costs paid with higher and higher taxes for others who are stuck there.
These rural areas wouldn’t happen to be located in states without income taxes, would they?
We’re thinking we need to make a place for the kids and grandkids to go to when TSHTF.

That's a prudent plan but...I'm planning to stay afloat when the Algore melting Arctic snowball Armeggadon comes.
Oh, please...stay away from Southern Oregon!!!
Ed
Just what we need out west, more damn hippies.
Darn right we’re getting out of the cities.
We’re sick of the grafitti, the filth, the noise and the rapid deterioration of society. The cities are being overrun with barbarians as each successive generation on handouts does a poorer job of socializing their fatherless children.
We don’t want to be here for the coming pandemics, or water shortages or pogroms against the remaining civilized residents
If they move to my local, they’ll get tired of having to travel 70 miles to the nearest Starbucks and after being subjected to the reality that global warming is myth, they’ll head straight home, or like many...to Portland or Eugene to hang out with the rest of the libs that preceded them.
grow up
Agreed!
A house boat is a good way to go except I think you’ll still need a place to dock it and hook up to utilities. Hooking up long term at a marina can leave you vulnerable to vagaries of the marina owner.

Public transporation is already dicey for the young and strong. The old will be easy victims to the expanding packs of surly thugs.
Not even the trendiest coffee shops or hippest art galleries are worth living in daily dread.

You’ll be welcomed in my little town as long as you leave the city where it is.
We don’t want water meters or sewers. The dirt road is fine the way it is. We don’t want a public boat launch on the lake and we damned sure don’t need a marina. A jet ski might just entice a local to take a few pot shots. If you want to make friends in the area, we don’t need a “center”. Just go to the post office and hang out like the rest of us civilized old farts.
I was thinking the same thing; The Greatest Generation produced the Sorriest Generation
Sorry about triple post.
All my life I have moved to where the job is, not where I would like to live. When I finally retire (still some years from now) I, and many like me, hope to move to where we have always wanted to live, if we can at all afford to do so. Suggesting that people moving into a rural area are selfish for doing so, actually tells me that there are a lot of selfish people already living in rural areas. They’ve got theirs, and they will be nasty to anyone else who would dare to move there. I actually now live in a very rural area in Idaho - fortunately, I haven’t seen the kind of nasty attitude implied by a lot of the replies I’ve seen above.
LOL leave the triple post crap on the city too.
Retired, left Prov,RI, and moved to rural Illinois. Love the fish fry at the VFW on Fri night. Sure beats the gunfire and police sirens on Fri nights in Providence.
Its not urban people moving to the country that’s the problem.
Its urban people moving to the country and deciding that its not urban enough.
I’m gonna guess the bulk of the boomers leaving the big cities are probably productive citizens who were trapped there for jobs. Now that the jobs don’t hold them there, they’re anxious to get out. The unproductive will stay on for their coninued share of public largesse.
As these boomers flee, these blue hellholes will lose the tax base once paid by these departing boomers. Over the next 10 years, the big cities will be hard pressed to fight off bankruptcy.
Here's what I think about that. Sometimes people move here from the city and expect the same services provided by high taxes and government control. Here, if you want fire protection, there is no tax for that. If you want protection you absolutely must pay the $20 to the rural fire department or they will let your house burn down (saving people or animals of course).
I think rural folks are resentful because they don't think "city folks" understand - you will NOT get the same services here and that's why you don't pay so many taxes.
And you can't move in and expect the welcome wagon to come calling - you have to prove you're decent folks. Nothing wrong with that.
I couldn’t agree more.
I’m at the tail end of the baby boomers (age 50) and my soul aches for 30+ acres with a pasture, view of the mountains and a small creek. I’ve been a city girl my whole life, but I’d love to have a place that brings me peace. A place to exhale.
Also, in case all hell breaks loose in the US, I’d like to be able to have my family somewhat off the grid. That’s the practical side of me!
East Tennessee perhaps?
Go back to playing with the KOSKidz...this place is for adults.
You're correct.
That's a huge problem.
My generation (boomers) will have to take a big haircut on Social Security and health care, or burden our kids and grandkids with overwhelming debt.
My hope is that Democrats are correctly tagged with the responsibility for most of this, so they get voted out and we begin to address the real problems.
You hit the nail on the head.
I pray that God gives you wisdom, quickly before its too late.
East Tennessee exactly. Hubby and I have worked in South Florida all our lives. Retiring in the next two years and moving to East Tennessee. We are hard core conservatives and love this country very much. We have our retirement home ready and can’t wait to get there.
Mountains, fresh air, season changes and cool weather. As well as like-minded folks. Can’t wait.
Its urban people moving to the country and deciding that its not urban enough.
Precisely!! You don't get no services here. It's all about individual accountability. Nobody's coming to rescue you, you can meet the lifeflight helicopter at the football field in town (if you can make it...that is)
No, he’s right. This is a huge problem. Created largely by Democrats, but a problem nonetheless.
Where old hippies go to die!
(Vermont too)
for sure, and I'd bet my old hometown of Cleveland is close behind.
I see, so welfare is OK when it benefits the group to which you belong. Got it.
>>”Selfish pricks.”<<
Tell that to the Vets who left their legs in a rice paddy, you little turds.
You need to read your history. As a boomer I have paid into social security for the previous generation since 1962 in spite of the fact that I never agreed with the government being in charge of an important part of peoples retirement. I don’t see what was so selfish about that. The WWII generation lived very comfortably on our dime. The social security system was created by the WWI generation. So there is plenty to analyze when it comes to placing blame for the current problems.
