Sound of War

42 kilometers away from Harsina (a/k/a Remat Mamre) as the crow flies, a tunnel implodes in Aza. My family and I hear the explosion like a massive thunder clap on a clear, blue day. My daughter-in-law identifies the cause immediately, says she hears them often in Bat Ayin, another 12 kilometers to the North along Highway 60, says sometimes the entire yishuv shakes. Four months out of America and all delusions of longitude have been shattered by a bomb 42 kilometers to the Southwest of my home. News is no longer something I watch on television or listen to on the radio. Hamas is smuggling in missiles, mortar shells, small arms and spare parts, preparing to end the latest cease fire, one way or another. The IDF has taken down one tunnel. There are others. It is here, it is now, it is me and mine. It will happen like a thunderclap on a perfect, clear day.

I'm confused. What does Bat Ayin ("West Bank") have to do with tunnels in Gaza.

You can hear the explosions from there, too. I heard them today from my house in a suburb of Hebron.

Hebron

No one I know who lives there spells (or says) it this way. I've never heard anything in J'lem or Tel Aviv. Color me skeptical.

“No one I know who lives there spells (or says) it this way. I’ve never heard anything in J’lem or Tel Aviv. Color me skeptical.”

Actually, you spell Hebron (sic) Het, Vet Resh Vav Nun Sofit. Segol under the Het, Sheva under the Vet, Holem over the Vav. I could care less how anyone else transliterates it. I don’t know what anyone hears in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv. They are further to the North, so you may well not hear anything there. This is the first time I ever heard anything, and I didn’t know what it was until my daughter-in-law explained it to me. Be skeptical. Whatever. Hag (sic) Sameah.

This is getting silly. I’ve seen it spelled in English all sorts of ways, Chebron, Chevron (not to be confused with a military decoration), Hebron or Hevron, but with a dot under the H, etc.

Map Quest doesn’t even bother with the Hebrew name, and calls it simply El Halil (Alif, Lam, Chaa, Lam, Yaa, Lam) to kowtow to the Arabs and their supposed supreme right to the place after making it jooodenrein in 5689.
