Apple leaves U.S. Chamber (of Commerce) over climate change stance
The Hill ^ | 10/5/09 | Jim Snyder

Posted on 10/05/2009 2:49:31 PM PDT by Jean S

Apple has left the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the fourth company to end its membership over the business group’s climate change stance.

A fifth company, Nike, quit the Chamber’s board of directors but remains members of the group.

In a letter sent to Chamber CEO Tom Donohue on Monday, an Apple executive said the company “strongly” objects to the Chamber’s comments opposing the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts to limit greenhouse gases.

“We would prefer that the Chamber take a more progressive stance on this critical issue and play a constructive role in addressing the climate crisis,” Apple Vice President for Worldwide Government Affairs Catherine Novelli wrote.

Apple recently announced its own efforts to reduce the carbon footprints of its products.

“For those companies who cannot or will not do the same, Apple supports regulating greenhouse gas emissions, and it is frustrating to find the Chamber at odds with us in this effort,” Novelli wrote.

Apple’s resignation from the Chamber is effective immediately.

Previously, PG&E, PNM Resources and Exelon resigned from the Chamber due to disagreement of climate legislation.

The Chamber has said it supports efforts to combat global warming but that the bill passed by the House would hurt the economy.  It also opposes the EPA regulating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

“We believe that Congress should set climate change policy through legislation, rather than having the EPA apply existing environmental statutes that were not created to regulate greenhouse gas emissions,” Donohue said in a statement last week.

No NGO should get tax money.
That includes the chamber of commerce that uses hotel tax.

Former Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Dee Everett was magistrated Monday on four second-degree felony indictments.

Everett was magistrated by Walker County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Janie Farris and released on $7,500 personal recognizance bond on each of the four charges.

A holdover Walker County grand jury from the January term returned the indictments Friday.

It isn't like Apple puts their name in front of MSNBC.

That's business. Do you think Microsoft cares what MSNBC says? If anything, considering the abysmal ratings MSNBC gets, Microsoft should want to get the "MS" out that network's name.

I’d prefer that Apple (and I’m an Apple product fan) and Ms. Novelli learn the facts about the “climate crisis” - there is none.

Time to get an iClue.

A progressive stance means a stance favored by left wing ideologues.

And "business" would suggest that if other computer companies went to the lengths that Apple does to make their products meet/exceed all the dumb environmental regulations that those other company's products would be more expense. Meaning, business advantage = Apple. ;-)

Perhaps their support of these regulations (that they already meet and exceed) is purely for their own PROFIT motives. ;-) Either way, I don't support these stupid regulations and my only concern when dealing with a computer company is if they can provide me with the best computer, for me.

Hypocrites. It’s easy to go green when you make computer equipment or software. It’s a natural evolution of the technology (smaller, faster, less power). But try doing that with businesses that make computers possible: steel, metals, silicon, chemical. The laws of nature demand X amount of energy to produce Y amount of product. You can whine all you want, but that is the reality. And Nike? The SLAVE LABOR shoemaker? They can just STFU.

"We believe that Congress should set climate change policy through legislation...”

You're looking at it from the wrong perspective. All companies, including the one I work for, are under a lot of pressure to "go green". If you go back and reread the full comment, they are preferring that Congress set climate change policy instead of via unelected bureaucrats in the EPA. That's sensible.

The fact that we here think there should be none at all, doesn't change the principle. If it's done, it should be done by congress where we at least have a right to protest and let our voices be heard.

Not that I'm defending green politics or Apple...

You're not in the business, I take it? Dead computers, routers, any electronics with PC boards actually are toxic waste, especially any batteries.

What I find ironic is that an increasing amount of pollution in California is borne by the jet stream coming from Taiwan and China from where much of our manufacturing has been relocated.

Indeed. The big money will be made in the nascent carbon trading derivatives market and the only really big money will be made by the Algores and other insiders. The other players will be left with a financial headache.
