Is Virginia blocking military personnel from voting?
Washington Examiner ^ | 10/04/09 | Michael Barone

Is Virginia denying military voters the chance to vote in its state election this November? That’s what I gather from this post from the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder and this post from Republican blogger Soren Dayton. There’s some shabby history here.

In 1944 Republicans and Southern Democrats in Congress ganged up to make it difficult for military personnel—about 12 million men at the time—to vote; Republicans believed that most G.I.s would vote for Franklin Roosevelt, and Southern Democrats feared that black G.I.s would vote and get into the habit of voting.

In 2000 some Democrats in Florida tried to prevent military votes from being counted. They feared most would vote for George W. Bush.

But what’s going on in Virginia is unclear.

The 2002 Virginia law which allegedly makes it difficult for military personnel to cast absentee votes was passed by a Republican legislature and signed by a Democratic governor.

Isn’t there something that can be done about this?

Can you imagine sending out absentee ballots the day before the election? The gall! They don’t even care if people know, that the vast majority of the media won’t even mention it.

Virginia has become very liberal.Richmond always voted lib, but even Norfolk/Newport-news votes that way now. Astonishing with how much the areas economy is dependent on the Navy. Northern Virginia is also hopeless. We are no longer a red state.

Yes, they are blocking the military vote in a passive-aggressive way.

Don’t be so glum.

NoVA is only 2/5th of the VA population.

It has to get really ramped up (as in 2008) to produce a 60 percent Rat vote.

If the rest of the state goes even 40 percent non-Rat, that’s enough to prevail.

Too many dims win state wide offices, and then oboma wins it in 08. Absolutely disgusting, I moved here from the liberal hell of Montgomery County MD. Hopefully obama’s antics will wake VA up.

I left maryland a long time ago, unfortunately NoVA has had a spillover of Socialsts, Rats, and libs from Northwest DC, and also an influx of immigrants (the legal kind who can vote) who are brain-dead about American politics and easily swayed into leftie causes.

I don’t think it’s tragic really, it’s just a matter of not repeating 2008.
