S.F. Schools Head Uses District Credit As Own

Jill Tucker, Chronicle Staff Writer Sunday, October 4, 2009

As San Francisco schools have cut budgets to the bone, the city's school board president used her district-issued credit card to charge thousands of dollars for personal items and thousands more at city restaurants and cafes, according to a Chronicle analysis of financial records.

Board President Kim-Shree Maufas charged $4,300 on the district's Diners Club card for a wide range of personal purchases.

They included more than $2,000 for a cultural exchange trip to China, $196 for tickets to the Florida Epcot theme park, $40 for black Crocs, a $125 car battery and a $162 car windshield, $160 in U.S. passport processing fees, a $37 medical visit in Los Angeles and $3 for Apple iTunes.

In addition, Maufas charged $3,000 on the district's Diner's Club for food and beverages to conduct meetings across San Francisco, although the people whom she met and specific district purposes typically were not divulged.

The records showed that she was often a big tipper with taxpayer funds. In more than 40 instances, a taxi or restaurant tip exceeded 20 percent of the final bill.

Maufas reimbursed the district in four payments over several months for the personal expenses, even as she continued to charge personal gas, food, parking and other items to the Diner's Club card.

She has the look of a Baraqqi.
Acts like one too.

I feel bad for the remaining good folks in Calif.

They must feel like I did living in Cleveland when Dennis Kucinich was mayor.

Go to todays Tennessean, they have a big story on scholl employess and misuse of credit cards; maybe it’s endemic.

IF she’s been paying it back on a regular basis, I don’t see the problem. IF not, then she needs to be held accountable.

The US military and some corporations USED to allow the personal use of gov’t or corporate cards as long as it was paid off on time. They stopped that when the defaults started.

Sounds like they just need to incorporate a “An official use only” policy.

Just another example of educationist corruption due to lack of motivation, poor communication skills and low societal expectations.

Why are you lumping corporations and government together? They are very different entities.

Businesses can do anything they want, as long as the owners (shareholders, in a corporation) ultimately approve. They are private entities and are not risking taxpayer money.

But Government risking taxpayer money by giving employees free money float on the credit card is absurd, and unacceptable.

This IS a big deal.

I used it as an example, nothing more. I see you chose to omit the other, more relevant portions of my post in your reply. Let me put it another way, I did NOT excuse her behavior and quantified my statements with big “IFs”.

Satisfied? Or do I need to get the crayons out and draw you a picture?

She was billing them for most of the expenses, including a trip to China that was not authorized. No documentation of purpose and attendees at 'business' dinners and lunches, large tips like $10 on a $24 lunch.

Then she needs to be hung out to dry. I won’t excuse the behavior.

I have uncovered exclusive, secret proof that these charges are founded entirely in racism....

They hate her name....Kim-Shree Maufas. Had she been named Debbie Smith no one would have noticed.
