The Sinking Lifeboat: Uncontrolled Immigration and U.S. Healthcare in 2009
Federation for American Immigration Reform ^ | Oct. .'09

Providers are reducing staffing and services and increasing rates, and hospitals are closing or facing bankruptcy. And the Obama administration wants to extend medical insurance to the uninsured. What they won't face is the role immigration has played in driving up the number of uninsured and the rising cost of health care for native-born Amereicans. Here is some substantiated research data: *Between 1989 and 2007, immmigrants and their U.S.- born children accounted for 71% of the increase in the uninsured. *Approximately 65% of illegal aliens in the U.S. are uninsured. *In many hospitals, as much as two-thirds of total operating costs are for uncompensated care for illegal aliens. *425,000 births a year - more than 1 in every 10 births - is to an illegal alien mother. States and localities can not deny emergency care to illegal aliens and many of them use hospital emergency departments - the most expensive source of health care - as their primary care provider. And state and local taxpayers are forced to foot this enormous bill. The problem has become so out-of-control that Mexican ambulance companies are being allowed to drive uninsured patients across the border to receive free treatment! Illegal aliens are taking advantage of legislation that reqiures emergency rooms to accept them - often with fatal consequences for insured citizens. And now Obama's priorities include the permanent incorporation of millions of illegal aliens currently in the country through an AMNESTY that he terms a "pathway to citizenship."

TOPICS: Culture/Society
KEYWORDS: bhoillegals; federalspending; illegals; welfarestate
The economic and cultural catastrophe of the massive illegal invasion will become exponentially worse with ObamaCare. Taxes will skyrocket even more if we have the Democratic socialized medicine debacle. The proposed plan will be another magnet attracting even more millions of illegals. Taxes for bankrupt public school districts, welfare and social services, prison incarceration, bankrupt and insolvent hospitals, and the social and criminal ravages of the drug cartel - already bad, will escalate tremendously. And before the trillions for ObamaCare even go into effect - we should remember that Obama and his Congress have already put us into record deficits and national debt. The next two or three generations are already in hock.

It is both legal and illegal immigrants that are the problem. Facts on Immigration and Health Insurance

In 2007, 33.2 percent of all immigrants (legal and illegal) did not have health insurance compared to 12.7 percent of native-born Americans.

Immigrants account for 27.1 percent of all those without health insurance. Immigrants are 12.5 percent of the nation’s total population.

There are 14.5 million immigrants and their U.S.-born children (under 18) who lack health insurance. They account for 31.9 percent of the entire uninsured population. Immigrants and their children are 16.8 percent of the nation’s total population.

In 2007, 47.6 percent of immigrants and their U.S.-born children were either uninsured or on Medicaid compared to 25 percent of natives and their children.

Cultural factors may also contribute to the high rate of immigrant uninsurance. College-educated immigrants are twice as likely as college-educated natives to lack health insurance.

In an earlier study, the Center for Immigration Studies estimated that 64 percent of illegal immigrants were uninsured in 2006, accounting for one out of seven people without insurance. If the U.S.-born children (under 18) of illegal immigrants are included, they account for one out of six people without insurance.

"Immigrants" -- how many legal, and how many illegal? This number means nothing without that distinction!

What I have been trying to figure out (and can someone who knows, help me here) is, why do they let them stay?

Why do the police or hospitals, or anyone else, not supposed to report them to immigration.

Years ago, when many of our ancestors immigrated here, their were rules, regulations and quotas. Many people were turned away. Many people waited years, to get in. There were strict immigration rules.

Those rules continued into the 80s. I recall working in a restaurant with a couple of illegals that were scared to death of being caught.

When did this stop? And WHY are they letting them in and letting them stay...is there a reason..who is permitting this and why?

Immigration policy should always serve the interests of the citizens of the host country, the country of destination.

I’ve never heard any government functionary or politician discuss it in those terms, if you can get them to discuss it at all.

Immigration must always serve the interests of citizens. Any change in policy must be analyzed and debated on that basis.

Gov’t largesse and illegal immigration go hand in hand. Unfortunately there will be no good way to exclude them from a public option without everybody having to prove citizenship. Papers please?

We’d be better off sending sheer medical charity to Mexico. Their docs are a LOT cheaper.

The papers would be needed only for the medical program, but there’s hardly any gummit program that hasn’t grown vastly beyond its need.

Thanks for the good information. Canter for Immigration Studies is on the same page as FAIR. Both are terrific sources of information for the illegal alien crisis. Too bad our politicians don’t read them!

He sure did! In those two words Joe Wilson told more truth than Obama’s whole crock of B.S. before Congress in 5,000 words!

Right - and as they come across the border Obama surrogates will give them a map to the nearest welfare and voter regitration offices.

Yes, but the article makes very clear by its many specific references to “illegal” what it means when it also sometimes refers to “immigrants.” Anyone who’s familiar with FAIR’s positions on this matter would know what the context is.

From what I’ve read, heard and observed, there are several factors involved: There is business which loves cheap labor with no benefits; there are liberals who pander to them for votes and don’t give a damn about the law; there is the Hispanic lobby which owns many politicians in Congress; there are the multi-culturalists who believe there should be no borders and that all cultural distinctions and values are simply relative; and, there are groups which seek to weaken America by deliberately provoking conflict and strife in our society. We see this tactic daily - male vs. female; black vs. white, rich vs. poor, Hispanic vs. everybody, young vs. the elderly, etc., etc. The list goes on forever. Suffice it to say that many groups that hate America want to destroy us by creating as much internal conflict among us as possible.

I completely agree with that. A good example is Australia, which for decades excluded certain races, religions, and people with certain ideological beliefs. This sounds rather intolerant to us Americans. But for Australia, given its relative geographical and cultural isolation, it was simply a matter of survival. And, as you said, this “served the interests of the host country.” When an individual or a culturally homogenious nation’s survival is threatened, self-preservation is still the strongest instinct.

Dems? ted kennedy's immigration reform legislation back in '65 may have opened us up to the flood of legal immigrants from the 3rd world, but you can put about 90% of the blame for the illegal alien invasion from the 3rd world on Bush II (jorge) and Reagan.

Unbridled immigration, both legal and illegal, along with the ideology of multiculturalism and globalism is destroying us and not just in a financial sense.

This is just not the america anymore, that I was born in.

I recall a lot of young adults in the 60s and 70s, that felt they didnt want to bring children into this screwed up world. Sometimes, I think back of that, and think they were probably right. What will we be leaving here, for our children and grandchildren and future generations.

I was always proud to be an american and felt truly blessed and lucky to have been born here. Now, I am not so sure.

I know what you mean. In another post I quoted the late Justice Rhenquist who said he found it more difficult with every new day to recognize his own country. I’m not by nature a pessimist but I have to face reality when it hits me in the face! Yes, I feel sorry for future generations because they’ll mature in a nation without the same cultural values, laws and opportunities that have always been part of the American tradition.

I think that’s absolutely right. One need only look at history, see what scholarly research such as Heritage tells us, or use just plain common sense as we see what’s happening right before our very eyes. The fact is that we’re seeing the Balkanization of America.
