Focus on Rangel, a Chairman Under Investigation
By CARL HULSE
Published: October 2, 2009
WASHINGTON Representative Charles B. Rangel of New York is increasingly in the spotlight these days and not just because he is in the thick of the health care debate as chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.
Just as the health care fight heads to the floors of the House and Senate, Republicans are intensifying efforts to make Mr. Rangel a symbol of Democratic misconduct and institutional arrogance because of his belated disclosure of personal assets and other financial missteps.
Despite some unease, Democrats say they are willing to stand by Mr. Rangel and will resist efforts to topple him from his chairmanship pending the anxiously awaited outcome of an ethics investigation that Mr. Rangel himself requested last year.
**SNIP**
Other factors are also at work in the decision by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and fellow Democratic leaders to allow Mr. Rangel, the fourth-most-senior member of the House and one of the nations best-known African-American politicians, to remain in his high-profile post for now.
Plenty of Democrats are uncomfortable with the notion of Mr. Rangels being replaced in the middle of the health care fight by the lawmaker next in line, Representative Pete Stark, a very liberal Californian with a sharp tongue and an occasionally abrasive manner. Trying to leapfrog Mr. Stark and devise an alternative line of succession could touch off a bitter intramural fight at a highly inconvenient moment.
In addition, the leadership is wary of alienating the 42-member Congressional Black Caucus. Many of those votes will be needed to push through health care legislation.

Hang on tight - the ride will get a bit bumpy.
That was a BS article.
What a nice way to phrase "tax evasion!"
“financial misteps”???? OOoooh, that’s some hard hitting journalism there.
You mean that because Rangel is black, he should be allowed to slide ? If he isn't given a free pass, the Congressional Negroes might get uppity?
That's racist !
It must be terribly difficult for the members of the Ethics Committee to reach a decision as to whether Rangel is guilty or not, after he CONFESSED to his guilt by filing amended income tax returns and amended congressional reports.
Honestly, the GOP should leave Rangel in office. I can already see the TV commercials that will be run next year...
The commercials and the GOP will ,of course, be called racist.
Mr. Rangle is part and parcel of those who feel so very entitled that stealing from the United States is a right. It is time we quit electing people who view their obligations in office with such irreverence.
GOP will be called racist with or without the commercials. Run ‘em.
Starke is one of Pelousy’s Bay Area commies. I cannot believe she would not want to move him up in status. He would be the equivalent of having Genghis Khan in charge of the World Peace Movement.
The Olympics fiasco perpetrated by 100% pure Africans in the name of America should tell black Americans that being black MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to the rest of the world! ! ! Do they think that being a slave 150 years ago is anything that compares with Europe's experience in WWII? The idea that the world owes black people a living is a myth perpetrated by the national socialists who want, and get, the monolithic support of essentially ALL black voters. Those voters don't realize they are just as much SLAVES now as they were back on the plantation. It's just different white guys in control. Obama is just another another 'massa'.
Hello, Charlie Rangel. Hello, Al Sharpton. Hello, Jesse Jackass. Hello, American Destiny!
ARe there NOT ENOUGH BLACKS in Harlem that are DECENT, Law ABIDING VOTERS??
Racism of Low Expectation....he’s Black, therefore he CAN’T be MORAL is what the Democrat Leadership are saying.
Funny how they decide to report on it, after Nancy Pelosi deems, nothing to happen...
