Obamas Olympic failure will only add to doubts about his presidency
Tim Reid in Washington
There has been a growing narrative taking hold about Barack Obamas presidency in recent weeks: that he is loved by many, but feared by none; that he is full of lofty vision, but is actually achieving nothing with his grandiloquence.
Chicagos dismal showing yesterday, after Mr Obamas personal, impassioned last-minute pitch, is a stunning humiliation for this President. It cannot be emphasised enough how this will feed the perception that on the world stage he looks good but carries no heft.
It was only the Olympic Games, the White House will argue not a high-stakes diplomatic gamble with North Korea. It is always worthwhile when Mr Obama sells America to the rest of the world, David Axelrod, his chief political adviser, said today. But that argument will fall on deaf ears in the US. Americans want their presidents to be winners.
Mr Obama was greeted as usual like a rock star by the IOC delegates in Copenhagen then humiliated by them. Perception is reality. A narrow defeat for Chicago would have been acceptable but the sheer scale of the defeat was a bombshell, and is a major blow for Mr Obama at a time when questions are being asked about his style of governance.

Morons. They chose to ignore it months ago, and now pretend to be shocked by this.
But no matter. They had fun dissing U.S.. Useless bunch of Euro snobs who should disappear ahead of U.S. libs. For the sake of the world.
This is news? I’ve know that BO has been an mty suit ever since he kicked Hillary in the balls during the 1st Presidential debate.
Nobody is really questioning his style, its the substance of his givernance that with which we have a problem.
In this case, President Obama did nothing but chamber of commerce type boosting on a national level. No different than what Bush, Clinton or Reagan would have done. Giving him grief for such things just makes conservatives look petty and will tend to make the mass of the electorate tune out substantive conservative criticisms concerning real issues of substance such as health care and national defense.
I’m sorry but your President just isn’t that good.
I believe America;s priorities are distorted.
I dont see this Olympic fiasco as a big deal.
His inability to make a decision on Afghanistan is the real sign of his disastrous incompetence. The Olympics debacle is just window dressing.
I’m sorry too but I don’t blame myself. His glass jaw and empty suit didn’t fool me. He’s black trash with a Communist ideology and a world laughing stock.

"The Emperor has no clothes"
“Obamas Olympic failure will only add to doubts about his presidency”
The world’s leftists know obuma is a wimp, and they smell blood in the water. Leftists always attack leftists if it will enhance their ego and power.
Someone needs to find obuma a comicbook and read to him about the MolotovRibbentrop Pact. It shows what happens to weaklings on the world stage.
NO SO!!!
This was ALL about him or did you not read/listen/watch one minute of his egotistical, self-centered, entreaty as well as his taking yet another cheap shot at the US as well as the "previous administration?"
I don't know about Clinton or Bush, but I seriously doubt that Reagan would have gone hat in hand to beg a bunch of international nimrods to allow us to host the Olympics and if he had, he probably would have succeeded.
Euros:
“Sorry America, we dealt with that kind of person back in the the 30’s and 40’s and we don’t want to go there again.”
Barry O. decided to be the first Present to lobby for the Olympics and did it as a bald face Piker for his home town.
You don't go to make a sales pitch, in an environment over you have no control, leverage or real influence. Especially if you are the supposed President.
It robs you of good will and more importantly demonstrates an inability to negotiate. In order to negotiate you have to hold some serious cards and lay them down face up, with a hold back that implies some further benefit.
Further, you don't sell your product, in this case the United States as being defective and say but our better days as a world community are ahead. Huh? No one brought up our faults.
Rule number one in sales: Put your best foot forward, demonstrate the positive points of your product and get consensus.
Rule number two: Equal stature. The United States is the greatest country in the world and most capable of delivering superior and world class venues that will strengthen and enhance the image of the Olympics.
Rule three: Demonstrate past success. The United states has successfully hosted the Olympics many time and they are still talked about as being in the true spirit of Olympic competition. More over, this success combined with American ingenuity is a real foundation for the experience of repeating a successful event and it is our desire to deliver a product of excellence that will provide a superior experience for athletes and spectators alike.
Rule number four: Always maintain control of the deal. Never show up to an auction, do round robins or answer an RFP unless you have a strong relation and solid position with your target prospect.
You are going to lose, waste time and look desperate. Every time.
Not my rule, just a fact and a universal rule. Don't be a sucker to justify a predisposed position, that does not favor you.
Rule number five: This a biggy. People don't really care about you. The only that matters to them is what is in it for me and what is your unique offering that is a superior benefit and advantage to, well, me.
Do not under any circumstances talk about your self. Ever!
Demonstrate your strengths to the people who have a vested interest in the outcome of your proposition and get a consensus.
That is a big one, get consensus from the prospect, that you understand their unique needs and have demonstrated your ability to fulfill that need.
This dummy broke five of 10 rules in negotiating and they were the most important rules.
It is not that he did some chamber of commerce work and that is seen as bad.
What is bad is being the first to do this and then breaking all the rules of negotiating and I mean all of them. Well, except I don't think he actually insulted anyone. Then again, he did nothing for his team back home and did some real damage by again apologizing for his teams behavior and making that the foundation of a decision. Oh and I suppose he insulted the intelligence of the participants with his sycophantic and banal, self serving sermon. Again.
That is just the beginning and I could go on but this dip also demonstrated he is a fence post with a tie and knows little about the nuances of dealing with nation states and gaining consensus from other nation states for your position.
Rookie mistakes, that make him look like a guy out on his first deer hunt. For a person of his stature just unacceptable and demonstrates some real weaknesses.
What is the picture of the guy acting like he going to fix some fences with his post?
Take heart, with the shine is off of Obama it’s possible they will not contribute to his campaign next time around.
I have to strongly disagree, my friend. The Obama’s, as usual, made it all about THEM. “Dig ME; kiss MY feet; idolize ME; enough about me......what do YOU think of me???”
It was nauseating.
Is it the President’s job to go stump for the Olympics to come to America? What happened when New York (ultimately unsuccessfully) tried to get it for 2012... did George W. Bush insert himself into the negotiations?
Oh, I can’t stand remembering that video. Terrible.
Watch out, the IOC will have their lawyers on you for misusing their precious logo.
Ooh! Who can Shop that pic with him wearing no clothes? That would be great.
That he was so publicly smacked down by the EuroTrash that is supposed to so love and revere him absolutely cracks me up.
I am sure Rio deserved to win, yet I am also convinced that much of the No vote on Chicago was pure anti-Americanism.
HOWEVER, with Chicagos handgun ban, no shooting athlete would have been ALLOWED to compete, or even posess his handgun, in Chi-town! Maybe they would have done that in Michigan?
O shouldn’t be trying so hard to be ‘Leader of the World’ but start worrying what his own Marxist party thinks of him.
He may be facing a ‘Hitler like moment’ soon, when Hitler was at his weakest, his generals scrambled to cover their own asses and abandoned him.
Chicagos dismal showing yesterday, after Mr Obamas personal, impassioned last-minute pitch, is a stunning humiliation for this President. It cannot be emphasised enough how this will feed the perception that on the world stage he looks good but carries no heft.
Okay, Barry was humiliated. So was the 'mrs and the Queen of women TV, Oprah. Fine, but like Ron Popeil says... 'There's More'.
The real loser was Mayor Daley. He's been wining, dining and giving verbal fellatio to the IOC for a couple years to get these games. He (Daley & Chicago are interchangeable) was the (cough) 'odds on favor', and then gets B*tch-Slapped right out of the box.
This would have been Daley's crowning glory, his ultimate legacy. And what's he get for his effort? .. treated like a $5.00 crack whore by a bunch of euro-weenies in Norway. Now THAT is 'humiliation'.
Yep, things haven't been going good for 'Da Mare' lately. Fifty-some of his people are in prison for corruption, gang killings are through the roof. His PD Supt admits his Police are outnumbered by the 100,000 gang members in Chicago (and are also out gunned). Then to top it off this Fenger HS Honor Student had the gall to get murdered by some animal with a 2x4 captured on a video which went viral - people world wide saw 'Daley's Chicago'. And right before the IOC was to vote, what nerve!
And, in a couple months Daley's draconian Gun Laws go in front of SCOTUS. If he loses there all bets are off on what Daley may do. Going berserk is a given as that's his only other mode 9'Chuckie' and 'Slightly Chuckie'). So no, something really off the wall will happen, even for him.
He just may wall off the city, have Chicago secede from the Union, and declare himself King for life. He'll show 'em all. Yes, he sure will.
