Obama’s Olympic Failure Will Only Add To Doubts About His Presidency

There has been a growing narrative taking hold about Barack Obama’s presidency in recent weeks: that he is loved by many, but feared by none; that he is full of lofty vision, but is actually achieving nothing with his grandiloquence.
Chicago’s dismal showing yesterday, after Mr Obama’s personal, impassioned last-minute pitch, is a stunning humiliation for this President. It cannot be emphasised enough how this will feed the perception that on the world stage he looks good — but carries no heft.
It was only the Olympic Games, the White House will argue — not a high-stakes diplomatic gamble with North Korea. It is always worthwhile when Mr Obama sells America to the rest of the world, David Axelrod, his chief political adviser, said today. But that argument will fall on deaf ears in the US. Americans want their presidents to be winners.
Mr Obama was greeted — as usual — like a rock star by the IOC delegates in Copenhagen — then humiliated by them. Perception is reality. A narrow defeat for Chicago would have been acceptable — but the sheer scale of the defeat was a bombshell, and is a major blow for Mr Obama at a time when questions are being asked about his style of governance.

Yes, that is my narrative all right.
I had a feeling all along that Rio De Janiero was going to get picked. But the punitocracy kept saying that it was "in the bag" or he wouldn't have gone. As someone else put it on another thread-- why did he take any chances? For a POTUS, this sort of thing should be a done deal before he goes overseas to parade about.
But while I wanted to minimize the importance of the Olympic decision-- but I believe that this does damage his reputation and influence.
What happens when we actually need this tool to be effective?

no,no,no,no this has nothing to do with the president of the United States....I can’t stand Obama, think that he is totally unqualified to be president, a liar, an incompetant a person who makes terrible decisions. He made an ill advised trip to Copenhagen (I should be so fortunate) to pitch the U.S. for the Olympic Games.....now, anyone who thinks that the decision as to where the games would be held was not made days before this debacle, is probably mistaken. Personaly I think Rio was the best decision...Madrid, Tokyo, Chicago have had their share of attention....One of the reasons that Chicago was not selected could have been the fact that people could not have brought their children to the games for fear that they would have become further victims of Chicago violence. Chicago has never handled crime very well and they are doing virtually nothing about the child on child violence going on. Only a crackdown on gang violence will bring an end to these inane crimes. Concentrate on the parents, the mommas, grandmas, aunties who are responsible for these total losers. They either have to control the animals that they raise or suffer consequences. If they identify the perps....long, hard, permanent prison sentences are in order....no plea bargins, no parole no nothing....you cannot stop this crime with milk and honey. a gigantic crackdown is in order.
