WASHINGTON (AFP) – US President Barack Obama was left with the rare taste of failure when votes were counted on Friday, after his hometown Chicago's hopes of hosting the 2016 Olympics died in Denmark.
Chicago's rejection by the International Olympic Committee in Copenhagen, dealt a personal blow to Obama, who had put his glowing global prestige on the line, as a favor to the city where he nurtured his own American dream.
Obama, who polls show is hugely popular outside the United States, was seen as the trump card in Chicago's pack on decision day at the IOC meeting.
But his star power was shown to have limits, as the gritty midwestern city tumbled out in the first round of final voting, and Rio de Janeiro surged to victory, over Madrid and Tokyo.
"One of the things that I think is most valuable about sports is that you can play a great game and still not win," a disappointed Obama said, back at the White House after a quick five-hour stay in Copenhagen.

Even before the result was announced Friday, Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, accused Obama of diverting attention from America's economic plight with his overnight trip to Denmark.
"As President Obama travels to Copenhagen to bring the Summer Olympics to his hometown seven years from now, Americans back home are increasingly concerned they won't have a job seven months from now," Steele said.
The Drudge Report news and gossip website, which frequently delights in attacking Obama, gave a glimpse into how grass roots conservatives might be viewing Obama's role in Chicago's demise.
"The Ego has landed" it said in a splash headline. "World Rejects Obama: Chicago out in first round."

I was listening to a very end audio clip of the bamster’s speech to the IOC and what he said basically translated into this: if you pick Chicago “we will make you proud”
if someone listened closely to the whole speech (which I’m still searching for-directions pls) one would be totally dumbfounded at the sheer lunacy of the logic of his argument!

Face it, this was above Obama’s pay grade, just like everything else he touches.
