Keeping America Safe From the Ranters [Do You Worry About Obama's Safety?]
The Wall Street Journal ^ | October 1, 2009 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 10/01/2009 6:43:27 PM PDT by Irish Rose

A few days ago, I was sent a link to a screed by MSNBC's left-wing anchorman Ed Schultz, in which he explained opposition to the president's health-care reform. "The Republicans lie. They want to see you dead. ... They kind of like it when that woman has cancer and they don't have anything for us." Next, a link to the syndicated show of right-wing radio talker Alex Jones ... "They'd love to kill 10,000 Americans," and, "The republic is falling right now."

This, increasingly, is the sound of our political conversation.

It is not new to call this kind of thing destructive, though it is. It is a daily agitating barrage that coarsens and inflames. It tears the national fabric. But it could wind up doing worse than that.

I see it this way. There are roughly 300 million people in America. Let's say 1% of them, only 1 in 100, are composed of those who might fairly be called emotionally unstable—the mentally ill, those who have limited or no ability to govern their actions, those who act out, as they say, physically or violently. That's three million people.

Let's say a third of them are regularly exposed to political media rants from right or left. That's a million people.

What effect might "they want to see you dead" and "the Republic is falling right now" have on their minds? ...

This is why, I think, so many people—I include, literally, every person I know, from all walks of life, and all ages—are worried that our elected leaders are not safe, that this overheated era will end in some violent act or acts.

Stop reading this and ask whoever's nearby, "Do you find yourself worrying about President Obama's safety?" I do not think you are going to get, "No."

I am earnestly looking forward to the end of the Obama presidency, but I would rather Barack Obama be president than be assassinated. My fellow conservatives are with me on this.

This isn't the first time I have seen anxiety over Obama being assassinated, and I don't understand it. Why is he more at risk than any other president? Are there groups on Facebook devoted to killing him? Have books and movies been produced about his death? Has anyone posted "Snipers Wanted" next to his picture? Have his political opponents carried ugly placards urging his demise?

No. But all of this happened to President Bush, and I never saw Peggy Noonan express concern. If she wasn't worried about people advocating President Bush's murder, why is she worried about people saying that Barack Obama is bringing down the Republic? It's plain which one is more likely to incite violence.

And by the way, I resent Alex Jones being used as representative of right-wingers. The man is a 9/11 conspiracy theorist, for crying out loud.

Peggy:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

What part of that didn't you understand?

No, I do not want Obama assassinated. Nor do I fear for his safety. Not really. The USSS has learned its lessons since Chapman and there is no chance that a crazed gunman is going to get anywhere near Obama.

The ultra-sophisticated methods that might penetrate the USSS screen are far beyond the resources of any loony. They would take the resources of a nation-state, meticulous planning and would obviously be the work of a nation-state. Even then, I would not give much odds on success, because his protectors are very paranoid and know all the possibilities.

I want Obama GONE, I would not cry if he had a bad accident, but I do not want him killed.

Some conservatives feel umbrage when this is said. "The left equates criticism with violence in order to squelch dissent." In some cases that of course will be true. But this isn't debate, it's more like incitement. And it comes from both right and left.

(BOLD MINE) Get your head out of your rear-end Peggy! Make a log of the verbal incitement caused by the left and multiply that with their amplification power (their audience). YOU ARE A LIAR!!! Yeah, now I remember why I can't stand reading her.

I don't want to see Obama harmed. I want his presidency to be a shining example to succeeding generations that leftists should never ever be let near any elected office or positioin of power. I want Obama to stay in office so that, through his and his cronies' arrogance, galvanize the American public to allow unimpeded investigation into every case of fraud perpetrated on this Republic by those abusing their elected office and their subsequent prosecution and incaceration (this means RINOs as well).

I want Obama and his ilk to (indirectly by the collective outrage of Americans) bring to end the rotten stranglehold of the vapid parasites that permeate our media and educational institutions.

No, 'Obama as Martyr' would enable those living off the productive to raise a smokescreen and continue in their efforts to bleed this country dry. Now the Left? They'll do anything if desperate.

This is absolutely the wrong question and the typical BS misdirection of the all who wish the American people harm and destruction of our nation.

What about keeping America safe from it’s politicians and numerous traitors? Why do I give a rats ass about anyone who will not stand up for me, my family or community? In fact supports the destruction and breakdown of all that help to make us?

It was this kind of cocktail talk that dissuaded Colin Powell from running in 1996, this crazy notion that white Americans today think the way that their grandfathers did about race. In addition to this, Noonan has absolutely no idea, NO IDEA how ordinary southern whites thought about blacks in, say. 1949. From what I have heard. her Irish kinsmen disliked blacks individually more than southern whites did. Carrol O’Connor, I have read, was parodying what he heard growing up Irish when he played Archie Bunker.

The difference between a murder of Obama or Bush is in the potential political and social consequences.

Bush murdered - Other than the inherent tragedy, no big problem. Most on our side are sufficiently reasonable and well-intentioned to to have taken such a thing in stride. There would be very little political hay made either - our leaders are not worshipped as Gods, nor is our politics a substitute for religion. Nor would there be much of any backlash against the Bush-haters, nor a threat to civil liberties.

Obama murdered - Well, there will be all of the above - hysterics, riots, bloody shirts all over, and there will be a genuine and probably permanent and potentially violent split in the polity. It would be very ugly.

No one I know wants to see him killed. Reason: none of us want to drive up and down Obama Ave for the rest of our lives.

I feel it something happened it would be someone one the Fringe Leftist radicals who would do this so they could blame us. Or even he may want it to happen himself so he will be immortalized forever and ever and ever, yes, this is a real possibility since he is a Muslim and would choose to be a martyr

His security is extraordinary, starting with his acceptance speech for the nomination. They close down whole areas for him. When you look at the attempts on Ford and Reagan, I can’t see anything like that happening.

Seems like every day another one of these Obama hacks comes out feigning 'worry' over the Bamster's safety.

I beginning to wonder if they are engaging in a little wishful thinking. Right now, people like Peggy Noonan are looking pretty stupid. Her and her elitist ilk fell for this nobody big time. Their supposed to be the best and the brightest and they went all in on a guy who more and more is looking like a pair of dueces.

I'm starting to wonder if they're not hoping he gets taken out because they're worried that by 2012, everyone will realize just how stupid they were to support such a nobody, leaving their own reputations and, more importantly, their own egos in tatters.

Hence, I think secretly they want something to happen to Obama so they can make a martyr out of him and save their own skins.

Obama is guarded by a group of intensely professional people, who have done their job regardless of the politics of the officeholder and done it well.

Even the most 'rabid ranter' should understand that an effective change in our government could not be accomplished by making Obama into some sort of martyr for his socialist cause(s), and that even an attempt would likely bring about a host of 'reforms' which sould only further damage the Constitution than the current administration (tough to do, but still possible).

When one considers that policy is also being made by myriad agencies with appointed heads, the Congress (staffers and legislators), and people in both cabinet level and sub-cabinet positions, the removal of one or two people would only serve goad the others on.

Any meaningful attempt at a coup would have to take the arms off that octopus, not just nick a tentacle or two, and that would require scale, planning, and execution beyond the scope of almost any 'nutter'.

There has been plenty of ranting from the Left, though about ranting from the Right.

I think this is just another attempt to stifle our 'extremists' or anyone who can be painted as one so the left can (as usual) present Socialism as being closer to the middle of the road. Cut the right lanes off and suddenly the middle is left of the yellow line...

Stupid Republicans will hasten to suck up to the Left and the and promptly throw anyone more Conservative than Olympia Snowe under the bus.

After all, there is an election coming up, and we can't have those nasty conservatives running around promoting a Constitutional Repbulic, fiscal responsibility, and the removal of criminals from government, can we? (/s)

I remember the Kennedy assassination that was very traumatic for the country.

Worst of all it made a totally inadequate president from an utterly corrupt, evil family, an untouchable martyr. If a similar thing happens to the Illegal Alien, we can only anticipate far worse. Assassination is the worst possible thing that could happen to him because of the utterly frightful damage it would do to the country.
