UT staff member dies from swine flu (Austin TX)
KVUE ^

Posted on 10/01/2009 3:24:50 PM PDT by traumer

A University of Texas at Austin staff member who checked into the hospital over the weekend has died of the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu.

Linda Duran, 42, worked at UT for 15-years as a service worker. The university says she had underlying health problems but they would not say what.

Funeral serves were set for Friday October 2 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel at 10 a.m.

This is the first known H1N1 death at UT.

Last week, more than 1,000 students came into the student health center -- 92 of those were confirmed flu cases.

Since the beginning of the school year, the number of flu cases has been slowly dropping.

UT students can get the seasonal flu vaccine starting Tuesday for just $5. Faculty can get one for $10.

Articles like this are disgusting.

They don’t mind telling you people are dying, but they won’t tell you what they are dying from.

So far, people who are healthy prior to coming down with H1N1, are not dying.

What was the extenuating circumstance here? People need to be informed.

“Well, we know what really killed this woman, but we’re not telling. Nana nana na na...” Assholes!

They always do that when there are 'underlying health problems'.....always

...they never say what it is.

Couldn’t agree more. I worked in the health care industry for about 32 years, and during that time I got one flu shot at the insistence of nurse friend. The flu doesn’t scare me, and the government doesn’t either.

If there are extenuating medical conditions that are fatal indicators, then the public should be informed. They don’t have to name names to get that out either.

Your assessment is spot on, and I DO NOT like being herded one fricken bit.

Asthma has been one of the “underlying factors.”

It has a high correlation with a secondary pneumonia that has been killing people.

Nothing but total hype. My kids got the H1N1 flu last week and I had it last Friday. My kids started getting better in 3 days on Tamiflu. It took me about 3 days on Tamiflu but took me until today to feel 100% better.

I would want to have the H1N1 any day compared to Flu B. By the way, I am in the flu kit business and our business has gone through the roof so these types of articles actually help my business.

I just want to make sure everyone calms down over the fear of H1N1.

The media wants to stir us in a panic. So does King Obama.

Yes it is hard to take anything the media or this administration puts out, but believe me it is different when it happens in your family. My niece is in intensive care with verified H1N1 and double pneumonia. She is 35 and has none of the risk factors other than being a student and being overweight. She is on a ventilator and we are just praying that she will survive. Please if you come down with symptoms try to get tamiflu immediately. She was sent home with tylenol and the second time sent home with just an IV. She almost died before they would admit her.

Then they are always wrong to do it.

Look, if a person has an underlying problem, then they need to know if that problem is a threat when combined with the flu. To not tell the public what they know amounts to medical malpractice.

You don’t have to give a specific patient’s inside information. Provide the maladies that would expose someone to a mortal situation, and be done with it.

This could be posted on the CDC and NIH web site. And they could be quite specific, if the health of the public were truly the driving motivation behind their efforts.

If you're drawing a breath — you have an underlying health problem. Everyone’s brief candle is eventually snuffed out.

It's only logical that the weakest are the first to succumb to a flu. That doesn't necessarily mean that the “underlying health problem” would have otherwise killed them. Influenza can kill -- all by itself.

“So far, people who are healthy prior to coming down with H1N1, are not dying.”

That’s not true. A large number of healthy young adults/teenagers are dying for unknown reasons related to swine flu.

There are threads on FreeRepublic with pictures of the dead.

I studied up on this, BTW, because I just recovered from the swine flu and basically my whole family came down with it.

Exactly right! I couldn’t agree with you more. These folks are jobbing the flu situation to try and drum up support for government run health care.

If the CDC and NIH’s deportment with regard to H1N1 are any indicator over the last year, I don’t want any part of a government health care involving these types of “professionals”.

I will only take the H1N1 vaccine, if a clear reason for taking it is given, and I fit the problem group.

Every report I have read up until today, related the deceased to an extenuating problem. What’s your definition of a ‘large number’? What percentage of overall deaths have been attributed to young healthy people?

Epilepsy could be one. My daughter has epilepsy, and there have been warnings to our community about deaths from H1N1 are twice what they are for normal flu for those with epilepsy and other neurological problems.

from what I’ve read, those “underlying health conditions” could be as common as being overweight or pregnant

the more the media uses this term “underlying health conditions” the less I believe them, or much of anyone else

I am sorry for your niece- may God watch over her

Yes, being “overweight” is an “underlying health condition” for this monster

That’s interesting, and it’s a great example of precisely what I would want to see out there for the public to be aware of.

Good luck to your daughter during this flu season. Take care...

I can hardly wait until they report every death from every cause. I’m quite sure if they did it by the numbers, it will be much harder to generate headlines about H1N1.

I agree. Look, IMO, we haven’t been shot straight with since the 1980s. The public health agencies handling of AIDS put me on notice that the public welfare was less important than being sensitive, if you catch my drift.

We had health care workers dealing with AIDS patients, and yet it was initially not allowed to stigmatize those patients by putting a warning on charts or in their room.

We had physicians doing surgeries on patients without being informed of the patient’s condition.

If we were that far out of whack, and we were, then there shouldn’t be much trust in these agencies.

We still have public bath houses today, and knowingly spreading the blood disorder is still a very iffy prosecution. “Still, you know it’s really important we don’t stigmatize anyone.” /s

My trust factor is about 0.25%

Thank you.

Here’s a couple of links to CDC information.

The second one may be of particular interest. It provides hospitalizations and fatalities for the period of August 30th to September 19th, 2009. There is also a graph showing regular level of infections for this period compared to historical norms.

For the lay person, it is difficult to make educated assessments. I don’t believe we get the best information, and it’s also hard to keep things in perspective.

How many people died of the regular influenza last year? We know about 30,000 people die each year on average. Where does this influenze come in, better or worse than that? Is this in fact a much worse influenza? Will normal influenza pale this year, as the H1N1 takes over, or will both be killers? Will total mortality for all influenzas go far above historic figures, or remain constant at about 30,000?

We just don’t know all the answers, and it’s my perception that the government powers that be don’t either.

How many people know, that each year we try to predict what influenze strains will be out there in the fall, and that we frequently miss variations?

About all we know for sure, is we shall see.

I do note that doctor’s office visits and admissions are up seasonally, but then the public has been fed a constant barage of “you’re gonna die” information all year, so what does increased visits to doctor’s offices really tell us? Are there more cases, or are people simply terrified to the point of going to doctor’s offices at the first non H1N1 related sneeze?

Is Tamiflu OTC or do you need a prescription?

You need a presciption for Tamiflu and it is very tough to get in some pharmacies right now.
