Romney likely to back Giuliani rival for N.Y. governor (Rick Lazio)

On Oct. 21, Romney plans to host a New York City fundraiser for Rick Lazio, a former Long Island congressman who announced his candidacy for governor last week. Lazio helped raise money for Romney’s 2008 presidential effort and played Giuliani in one of Romney’s debate-prep sessions during the GOP primaries.

“It’s a private fundraiser and it’s not a public endorsement event,” said Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom. “But stay tuned.”

The former Massachusetts governor is active in helping fellow Republicans as he continues to lay the groundwork for a possible repeat bid for the presidency in 2012. Wednesday night, the 2008 GOP nominee, Senator John McCain, put his name on a fund-raiser for Romney in Phoenix.

I wonder if myth romney is doing this because he expects Guiliani is supporting Sarah in 2012?

Choosing between Loozio and Giussolini is like choosing between Haggis and Lutefisk.

to be honest i am sure
i want to say yes but again not too sure about that. Keep in mind this is NY we are talking about so Lazio is probably a moderate at best
still ANY GOP pickup in blue states will be good. 2010 is a redistricting year and anything that can be done to defend or increase R seats will help stymie Obama’s agenda.
I dont care if it is Lazio, Rudy or Frosty the Snowman if they can win the Governorship in NY for the GOP it will help federally shortly thereafter

Loozio is pro-life and is so-so on RTKBA. Giussolini is bad on both.

I think he is, but he’ll never beat Rudy in the primary, and he’d pull very few RAT votes in the general.

Lazio is probably more conservative....

put not as electable in liberal NY.

Rudy would make a much better Gov or Senator than anything the Dems have out there...

I hate to compromise but this is a bright blue state....

Pataki was governor of NY from 1994-2006, but that didn’t help the GOP nationally.

According to Mike Murphy , Lazios campaign manager , he was the worst candidate he ever woeked for . Lazy was the word. Not to mention his childlike move on Hillary . The guy is a dope .

to be honest he is probably doing this just to lay groundwork for another run. remember Rudy is not even an official candidate at this point he just entices by saying he “may” run. either get in or get out for crying out loud. Lazio appears to be the only declared candidate at this point so why not help him out? he also appears to be friendly with Lazio so he could just be helping his friend out. Romney i think may have a good shot at grabbing the nomination this time. he never dismantled his campaign just turned it into some sort of PAC and goes around helping candidates. this is all good groundwork for another run.

“Pataki was governor of NY from 1994-2006, but that didn’t help the GOP nationally”

um it kept some Republican congressional seats in Republican hands for years after NY went all blue so yes it did help nationally. Now with this being a redistricting year perhaps the seats can be gerrymandered again so that the Rs can pick a few seats in the House.

That would be a new one, the mitt-haters complaining that Mitt is backing a guy that’s too conservative to win, and that he should be backing the more liberal guy instead.

The same reason as there was relatively little coverage of the Tea Parties or 9-12-09.

The State Controlled Media doesn't want anyone to see the protests against Barry 0.

Can you imagine if the Tea Parties or 9-12-09 occurred against a GOP president? Good God, it would be 24 hours a day coverage. Think about it.

Mitt as Rudy is unacceptable for the POTUS possition. Period. However the local politics shake out however is what it is... most republicans pols in NY are better than most Dhimmicrats.....

looking closer at Lazio vs Rudy....I would say they are pretty close to each other in the RINO department. I happen to like Rudy and think he did a great job of cleaning up NYC, the constituion of the US not withstanding.

but I agree with you to a point...lots of hypocracy to go around....and sometime you just have to hold your nose and vote....

If the choice is between two RINOs, pick the one that Myth is not backing. We don’t want him to have any poltical infrastructure when he runs in 2012.

Can any of the previous contenders for the GOP candidate for POTUS be elected in a general election? I would include Palin in this group, too. I seriously doubt that the GOP is going to run another RINO. If it does, it deserves to lose. Last time the MSM and the crossover voters in Florida chose the GOP candidate. The MSM wants the GOP to chose another RINO, and it will be a love fest for the biggest RINO.
I personally don't believe that Palin is electable. I know that many on FR strongly disagree with me, and only time will tell if I'm correct or not. I'm still waiting for that conservative leader that inspires me to vote for him/her.
I doubt that either Romney or Pawlenty will be the party's candidate. Whoever runs will have to have impeccable conservative credentials.

IF Guiliani wants to run for President again, he needs to be Governor. otherwise, he’s better off in the Senate. He’d crush Gillebrand.

Well, at least Lazio is pro-life. And he got his head handed to him by feminists——when he “dared to invade Hillary’s space” at a debate (by handing her something).

I would probably support Rudy over Lazio, for the reason that Rudy has a much better chance of winning. But if you could pick one to be IN the office, I’d pick Lazio.

I’m glad it’s not my state, because I hate being put in a position where I would even consider not voting for the guy I think would make the best Senator (Lazio).
