These could be building up to something really big.

God bless those people. That area seems to be a hot bed of activity right now. I pray for God's mercy, protection and help to the people of Samoa and Indonesia.

That is in the ring of fire. We need to be pray for California. Seems like when there is that much activity, it travels around the ring.

Sounds like an aftershock from the initial quake. Indonesia has always been known for their quakes.

6.9 is no aftershock. The one yesterday was about 13 miles off shore, this one is on land right on the fault line.

From the BNO Newsroom.

BENGKULU, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) – A major earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sumatra on Thursday morning, the second in as many days, officials said. There was no immediate word on damage or casualties.

The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0, struck at 8.52 a.m. local time, according to the country’s seismological agency. The United States Geological Survey reported the earthquake as a 6.8-magnitude. It’s epicenter was located about 6 to 15 miles deep, according to preliminary readings, making it an extremely shallow earthquake. Shallow earthquakes often tend to cause more severe damage.

The earthquake struck about 96 miles north-northwest from Bengkulu on Indonesia’s Sumatra, or 141 miles southeast from Padang. Briefly after the earthquake, at 9.20 a.m. local time, an aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 struck nearby.

The latest quake follows a series of powerful earthquakes in the region, which is also known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire.” On Tuesday, a massive 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck near the Samoa islands in the Pacific Ocean, creating deadly tidal waves that likely killed hundreds of people.

On Wednesday, a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck 30 miles from Indonesia’s Padang on Sumatra, possibly killing thousands of people.

A spokeswoman for the United States Geological Survey said that, based on the initial readings, Thursday’s earthquake was not an aftershock to Wednesday’s earthquake as they were located too far from each other.

There was no immediate word on damage or casualties from the latest earthquake. A tsunami warning was not issued as the earthquake was located on land.

Hahaha...awesome...

You know, I have a hard time imagining how apoplectic the end-times-ers would be if we had another eruption like that today. But since it happened over 100 years ago, obviously it had nothing to do with Biblical prophecy - after all, the Bible says the end times will be in the first decades of the third millennium. Right?

The plate boundary in that location is complex; the Indo-Australian Plate isn’t subducting under the Eurasian plate at right angles - it’s actually moving obliquely down under it to the northeast. So in addition to the offshore subduction zone, there’s the Sumatran Fault which runs the whole length of Sumatra, where the plates slide past each other like the San Andreas Fault.

Just glancing at the location and preliminary this probably is on the strike-slip fault rather than on the subduction zone.

Whether something is an “aftershock” is open to debate. It’s highly likely the previous earthquake triggered this one by increasing the strike-slip strain.

Gosh so much prophecy being fulfilled...wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes and scoffers....seems to all be coming together for a grand finale doesn’t it?

1) The world has NEVER been so peaceful as it is today, particularly on a per-capita basis.

There currently is no inter-state war going on (war between sovereign countries), something which is almost unheard of in history. Many bloody civil wars have recently ended or declined in violence.

There has been a fairly steady overall decline in both numbers of wars, and total war deaths, since World War II; this decline got even more pronounced during the W Administration.

2) Even taking into account all of the earthquakes of the past few days, we're still on-pace worldwide to have an AVERAGE number of large earthquakes in 2009; there have been a below-average number of large earthquakes in most of the last ten years.

Since Indonesia has (IIRC) among the highest number of muslims outside the middle east, I have to wonder if God is trying to catch their attention?

I would surrender that you are far more a geologist than my amatuerish experience (lifelong friend is a geologist out of Utah) and appreciate your expertise. Just that they are happening all over the area is causing a great deal of concern on the part of the California geologists. I remember reading a story about a month ago they were seeing warning signs increasing dramatically. The 9.1 in 2004 seems to have created a lot of moving in the Parkville area.

Me, I’m just a machine design engineer so all of this stuff is rather stimulating to contemplate.

Samoa and American Samoa, where over 100 people were killed by the tsunami, are almost 100% Christian. Is God trying to get the attention of future NFL linemen or something?

The plate boundaries in Indonesia have been there millions of years, before there were humans or religion.

I'll venture the wacky opinion that the Indonesian earthquakes were caused by plate tectonics and physics.
