I suspect that they will get exactly what they want, even if the end result is an Edsel. That is, the engine put in the Edsel was stronger and heavier than the frame would typically carry. High performance aircraft have to be engineered around their engine and armaments, or you are courting disaster.
Most aircraft since the 70s have been designed to allow for growth in engine thrust. The Rafale’s M-88 is lighter than the Eurofighter’s or Super Hornet’s engines and has plenty of growth potential.
