Controversy brews over process striking registered voters off rolls

The Republican-controlled Shelby County Election Commission has been aggressively purging the voter registration roll this year following a registration binge by Democrats last fall.

If there is any relationship it's tenuous, though, and the commission has been carefully following federal law as it has pared the list of Shelby County voters to about 600,000.

Voters who identify themselves as white comprise 53 percent of those purged this year, while they make up only 33 percent of the total number of registered voters.

Voters who identify themselves as black comprise 27 percent of the purges but 35 percent of the registered voters.

In this area, racial tensions and "potential disenfranchisement" issues have taken a back seat as election officials carefully pare down the voter roles. It's about time - now lets see the city of Memphis do the same!

My daughter moved to another state 19 years ago, but every time I go to vote her name is right above mine on the rolls.

Maybe she joined ACORN????? ACORN probably has her registered in every county in the state. It would be interesting to find out.

I’ve started calling Dallas county annually to make sure my deceased parents aren’t voting...Luckily,they haven’t since before they died. Doesn’t mean that they aren’t registered elsewhere...
