DURHAM (WTVD) -- An overtime scandal at the Durham Police Department will cost a high-ranking officer her job.

Sources told Eyewitness News Deputy Chief B.J. Council is leaving the department.

Eyewitness News has learned Council was placed on administrative duty Tuesday and will be out of her job by Friday.

Her departure stems from an internal probe of a Durham police officer's overtime pay.

That officer earned more than $62,000 in overtime, exceeding the officer's actual salary.

Sources said the officer's overtime was approved by the police department's second-in-command, who is Council.

A news conference is planned for Wednesday.

Beverly Council is one of the defendants in the Duke Lacrosse Frame civil suits. She was one of the ringleaders of the Frame.

It is time for her to come clean and go to the US Attorney and tell them what she knows.

She was probably planning on retiring soon and was going to stick it to the taxpayers.

Let’s just say that Durham is a very liberal and “diverse” community. Heavily democrat . . . .

ABB thanks for the links to this Durham crooks story, esp the John Locke postings. I became a reader on the incredible crappy politics og the Triangle via following the Duke/LAX stories. It is a shame what a toxic cesspool the leftist academic world is...time for a revolution in the academy!

Absolutely agree. It's basically NC's anus.

I live here. You have no idea.

All you need to know: Durham County went 76-22 Obama in 2008. Not even the granola liberals (fruits, nuts, and flakes) down in Asheville/Buncombe County or the limo liberals over in Chapel Hell/Carrboro/Orange County could top that. Three to one Obama. There are no Republicans in any elected office in Durham County or the City of Durham. Not a single one, that I’m aware of anyway.

If there was anyplace in the USA that could combine judicial malfeasance, police incompetence, black racism, and white guilt to produce the Duke lacrosse travesty, it would be here in beautiful Nifongville, North Carolina.

The only dealings I have yet had (fortunately) with the DPD was when I sat on a jury last year. They had arrested a kid on crack charges (possession with intent to distribute) in what looked at first like an open-and-shut case. But one of the local high-powered defense attorneys, who was peripherally involved with the lacrosse kerfuffle, blew the case apart. Let’s just say that the DPD’s record-keeping was spotty at best, the FBI’s involvement (as part of a “joint task force”) only made things worse, and nobody could explain why they took four full years to take this guy to court. We acquitted him after 20 minutes of deliberation. There wasn’t anything corrupt about it, the whole process from arrest to trial just looked very sloppy.

The DPD has never struck me as being the sharpest spoons in the drawer.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember seeing a pic of the DPD brass during the Hoax and being surprised that “Beverly” was a man.

Yep. Council is a black male, not a “she” as The Herald Sun claims. (http://www.owdna.org/sign.htm - 2nd from left in first pic).

I had to stay in Durham for 4 months while my daughter was being treated at Duke hospital. There were signs everywhere saying Durham was a “City of Progress”. My wife and I joked that is should be called the “City of Pot-holes” since the roads were so bad or the “City of Police” since the crime rate was so high.

The state of NC has threatened many times to take over the Durham City schools because it is so bad. Of course, they never follow up.

What kills me about this place is that there is no reason it should be like this. Durham County encompasses Research Triangle Park, one of the foremost biotech research areas in the country. IBM has massive operations out here, so do Pfizer, Bayer, GlaxoSmithKline, Nortel, SAS, and many others. The Triangle’s got the third-highest proportion of college degree-holders of any metropolitan area in the country, and the highest post-graduate proportion. You have one of the allegedly-best colleges in the country right in town (Duke) and two more within twenty miles either direction (UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State). It’s relatively inexpensive to live here compared to big Northeastern cities, the climate is nice, the area is physically attractive, you’re three hours from beautiful mountains or nice beaches. Even your local minor-league baseball team is probably the most famous minor-league team in the entire country (and current AAA champions)—the Durham Bulls. Almost anywhere else in the country only dreams of having the advantages and the positives that Durham has.

Do you know how hard you have to work to take all these advantages and turn them into the mess that is Durham today? Where crime’s rampant, where the streets are falling apart, where taxes are high and services are low, where we’re being overrun with illegals despite allegedly being a 287(g)-participating jurisdiction? This area is run by people who are more interested in lining their own pockets and punishing “The Man” for past racism, both real and imagined, than they are with creating a vibrant, growing city attractive to growth and expansion.

I am firmly convinced, to show you the pathology around here, that if Michael Nifong stood for re-election as District Attorney, he’d get no less than 30% of the vote. Guaran-damn-teed, take it to the bank. And that is just sad.

I wouldn't be so conservative. Nifong would probably win an election in Durham. "Durham, making Wilson, NC look like paradise since 1852."
