SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Attorney General Jerry Brown took a major step toward running for governor on Tuesday by filing paperwork that will allow him to raise campaign funds more aggressively. Brown, a Democrat who served as governor of California from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s, submitted papers for "Brown for Governor 2010 Exploratory Committee" with the state's top elections officer.
Brown, 71, had already been raising campaign funds but the committee will allow him to raise money at higher levels if he opts to seek the Democratic nomination for governor.
Brown can run for governor again because the state's two-term limit on the office applies to governors who have served after November 1990.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is also seeking the party's nomination in the race to succeed Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who cannot run for a third term in 2010.
An official decision by Brown may not be made until next year, said political adviser Steven Glazer.
"He's focused on doing his job as attorney general," Glazer said. "Second, he wants to be very thoughtful about this decision. There is no need to rush it."
Brown comes from one of California's most prominent political families. His father served as governor and his sister is a former state treasurer who unsuccessfully ran for governor.

Oy vey! Things are f***ed up out there!
If we have to return to the days of another Brown adminstration, it’s too bad it can’t be Pat Brown. This race is Jerry’s to lose. No way does Newsom beat him in the primary, and there simply ain’t no way Meg “Slim” Whitman can beat him. California has gone to the dogs and I am afraid folks that Jerry Brown may in fact be the best we can do anymore.
Now that’s downright DEPRESSING.
Not that it is much consolation, but I actually think that today’s Jerry Brown is far more practical, if not conservative, than he was during his earlier adminstration. He is far from what I would hope for in a governor, he honestly would not be any worse than Arnold has been. I guess you’re right, it is quite depressing.
Time to resurrect the old bumper sticker, “If it’s Brown, Flush it.”
He must be at least 130 years old by now.
What about that POS LA Mayor ? Thought he was running also.
California: R.I.P.
Suicide by Liberalism
Governor Moonbeam was a joke of a governor the first time around. We have every reason to believe he’ll be just as much the joke as a retread.
I thought he died of a drug overdose.
There ya go again Californians, show us how really really stupid you are out there. Elect Jerry brown once again.
Govt. there is out of control so turn to the moonbeam once again.
Stupids.
I wonder if Linda Ronstadt is making a comeback too?

I lived in CA while this buffoon was gove. the first time.He wasn't a joke, he was a disaster.
Deja Vu ..
All over again.
If it’s brown
flush it down
still holds true.
I, too, lived in California back then. It was the first election I voted in. I was not a fan of Houston Flournoy and I sure as heck wasn't going to vote for Jerry Brown so I did something I'm sure most first time voters do not do. I wrote in my own name.
