SALT LAKE CITY -- Former Massachusetts governor and head of the 2002 Olympic Organizing Committee Mitt Romney says President Obama is doing exactly what needs to be done by flying to Denmark to lobby for the Olympics to come to Chicago in 2016.
Romney tells ABC News that having a sitting president make a personal pitch can make an enormous difference to the 106 members of the International Olympic Committee.
"I think the people in the IOC want to understand the level of the commitment of the host country," Romney said. "Does the host country really care? Is this going to be a high priority? And nothing says that like having the presence of the leader of that country and, particularly, the case of Barack Obama."

I still don’t know why people are upset that Obama is in Copenhagen trying to get the Olympics. For me, it’s a win-win. Obama is out of the country and I love having the Olympics where they belong,in the United States. If Chicago could follow the LA model from 1984, this could help them. Granted, there probably isn’t someone like Peter Ueberroth lurking to run the Olympics.
I remember during the campaign that while I said I thought Romney was a good man I just could not support him but could not put my finger on exactly why. Now I know...thanks to Romney himself.

Exactly. I like Mitt for the most part, and he did a great job pulling the SLC Olympics together. But personally, I think the Olympics have turned into a pile of rotten commercial-political garbage, and that the federal government should have nothing whatsoever to do with the Olympics. All over the world, including in the US, the Olympics have become an opportunity for corrupt politicians to trample citizens’ basic rights. And when the US participates in the Olympics in Communist or other totalitarian nations, we ending up aiding and abetting those governments’ public relations prorrams, and pushing our athletes (often young and naive) into participating in this deceptive showcasing of totalitarian governments.
