For the first time, the decennial census will be distributed in the two languages to 13.5 million households in predominantly Spanish-speaking neighborhoods. Latino advocates hope the forms will lead to a more accurate count by winning over the trust of immigrants who are often wary of government and may be even more fearful after the recent surge in immigration raids and deportations.

The bilingual forms will be mailed out to neighborhoods where at least a fifth of households report speaking primarily Spanish and little English, said Adrienne Oneto, assistant division chief for content and outreach at the Census Bureau in Washington. The cost of preparing and mailing the bilingual questionnaires is about $26 million, which is more than it would have cost to send only English forms.
More than a quarter of the forms will be distributed in California from Fresno to the Mexican border, with Los Angeles County topping the list. The Miami and Houston areas will also receive sizable numbers of the questionnaires.
I can sleep now tonight.../sarc. Actually I am going to fill mine out in Spanish and I am cauasion but had Spanish in high school and college and was stationed in Panama for two years...I think it would be great to throw them off. I guess it is better than most people on FR who are not filling theirs out at all.

On the other hand you can simply change "McDonnell" to "Carmacadonnella", and "Deeds" to "Jaodeedasa" and that ought to be enough for any Spanish speakers who are literate.

Anyone besides me on ancestry.com? My ancestors (many of them illiterate) climbed out of the slums and gutters of Saxony, England, and Glasgow, managed to fight in the Revolutionary war, War between the States, WW1, WW2, and still all managed to be counted in ALL census reports since they got here.

Why are we taxpayers paying to have bilingual forms printed? One of the requirements to become a naturalized American is to be able to read, speak and understand English. Non-citizens shouldn’t be receiving Census forms, no matter WHAT language they’re printed in.
This is just more government waste!

Today’s immigrant should not be bothered with the trifles previous generations had to deal with, inluding:
- their legality
- their state of health
- their real name and identity
- bothering with learning our Imperialist American culture
- bothering with learning English, which subsumes their own cultural identity
Instead, we shall embrace everyone on their own terms, and become a more glorious nation as a result. Now, keep working harder comrade, your betters are depending on your proceeds to keep them in the lifestyle to which they have been promised!
