I lived in Japan for four years as a military dependent. I hate it that the Japanese think that all Americans are stupid for putting this imbecile in office. Many of us did all we could legally and morally to keep it from happening but the other side was too corrupt and many of the voters too stupid to make a cogent decision. In the short term, Japan is vulnerable to military attack. In the long term, if it goes as you say, the Japanese are capable of turning their industrial complex in to a military complex and ward off any and all challenges.

and shall you enjoy Japan forming a military alliance with China, and have Chinese nuclear submarines having free access to the west coast of US from Chinese bases in Japan replacing those of US. Are you ready to see a new Pearl harbor, this time by China?

No, not exactly nationalists! These leftist enjoy to rip their flag and their anthlem. The leftists are Nazi like anti-American leftist yellow supremacists that believe in an unity of the yellow skin. That is why these leftists are promoting the EU for East Asia. Very few Americans are aware of this yellow supremacists emerging.

I think that the Japanese could have handled a bad American economy or an Obama Presidency, but now that they are stuck with both they are seriously looking at their options and wondering whether it is in their interests to be so closely tied to American foreign AND economic policies at a time when the US is being run by a flaming bunch of idiots.

And I also agree with your take that the last election was a rejection of the LDP and not a blanket endorsement of the DPJ’s policies — to the extent that they have policies — which is not much in my view.

Both the LDP and the DPJ are big tent organizations. The DPJ also has a conservative wing and a quietly pro-military wing that is going to argue reasonably that if Japan is not going to depend on America for its defense (a quite reasonable conclusion from where I sit) they will have to do more to defend themselves.

Japan “owns” a lot of our debt in the form of US Treasuries. They see the carnage that is going to unfold here in the US. They are wising up.

Yea, lots of it - and prior to the last 9 months or so, the only things that I hoarded were things that were going away (like freon, pesticide, and light bulbs - it’s great being able to still kill bugs). Now, it’s everything, from cars (i.e., the largest non-union-built vehicle available) down to shoelaces (and shoes, for that matter).

There is no way that a country can borrow as much as we have, have no means to pay it back...and can get away unscathed. I personally expect prices to soar, then political pressure to DO SOMETHING, which will be price controls...

...and then SHORTAGES (guaranteed with price controls). It is that day I’m planning for. I simply don’t want to spend my mornings waiting in line to buy toothpaste when it finally arrives. Saving money is secondary, but also important.

What bugs me is that the money in the savings (401K, IRA, Bank savings) is going to lose a lot of it's purchasing power...

After their export-based economy has taken hits every bit as bad as the 1930’s in the last year, the people are furious and they want someone who is going to do something different than the status quo

So they voted for hope and change also? Good luck with that.

“What bugs me is that the money in the savings (401K, IRA, Bank savings) is going to lose a lot of it’s purchasing power...”

Yep - that’s painful. But the way that I see it, the money has already been spent. It was ‘loaned’ out to house flippers in California and elsewhere and spent by our government on the ‘stimulus’, welfare, and public housing. I remember back when Clinton took office, Rush said that they really wanted to get a piece of our retirement accounts and pension funds, as that was the only real cash left...well, they finally got it.

You are the only one to get it, at least partially. Not one person has commented on the demographic death spiral unfolding in Japan. They have a rapidly aging population that will put unprecedented demands on the few remaining workers...(IMHO;)
