A 33-year old man from Malmö has been sentenced to ten years in prison by a US court for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old he met online.
The man travelled to the city of Corpus Christi in Texas in October 2008 and was arrested ten days later by police in a hotel room.
The girl, who had ran away from home, was found in the room partially clothed. Hotel personnel raised the alarm after recognising the girl from a missing persons poster.
According to Texas law, the age of consent is 17 years old. The Swede pleaded guilty on eight counts of sexual assault of a child, according to local newspaper Caller-Times.
"Each second-degree felony count was punishable by as many as 20 years in prison and as much as a $10,000 fine," stated the newspaper's website.
"As part of a plea deal, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison on each count. The sentences will run at the same time."
The Swede will be deported from the country after serving his sentence.

If other behavior is relevant, the age of consent in the US should be 30.

- “Ö” is pronounced somewhat like “Ea” in “Earn”, wether we’re talking Swedish, German or Hungarian.

- The red light districts of Hamburg are a joke to what they used to be.
I never experienced them myself (I’m only 40), but I’ve understood that during the early 1960’s, when the Beatles used to entertain drunken seamen at rough, shabby bars along the legendary Reeperbahn in the St. Pauli district of the city, whatever you were looking for was for was just an issue of price.
Back to reality. Recently, while enjoying a nice Holstein holiday, I went on a small excursion to this part of Hamburg to check what it was like today.
I might just as well have visited IKEA in Wendlohe..

As a practical matter, he'll probably do two or three years and get thrown out of the country. For most state crimes in the US, expect to serve about a third of the sentence. A little less in some cases, a little longer if you misbehave.
For federal crimes, however, you'd serve almost the entire sentence.

Regardless of this, I think men of my age (I’m 40) ought to be more careful when it comes to seductive teenage girls.
Regardless of what the law says, you’ll get into trouble.
I willingly admit lovely 17 year old girls can be awfully tempting, but I honestly don’t wish to have anything to do with them.
I simply don’t understand why they target older men like me, but I do know why I shut my mind to such behavior.

Damn Swedes! Next thing, they’ll be driving all over Corpus in Volvo lowriders with King Olaf painted on the hood blasting ABBA from the stereo.
