I really feel for parents flying with small children. Over the last 20 years, I have seen a sad degradation of the available in-flight entertainment. It used to be that you might be bored by what the airline chose to show but you didnt ever find yourself wishing that your children werent on board because of it.
I can remember about ten years ago or so starting to see airlines warn that the in-flight entertainment might not be appropriate to all ages; parents might want to think about whether this was something that they wanted their kids to watch. I dont see those warnings anymore.
I recently had occasion to fly to Chicago and back to participate in a symposium on Second Amendment law. The flight back from Chicago being roughly three hours, United Airlines showed an episode of The Office and the film The Proposal. In both cases, there was about 1-2% of each that could have been excised with no artistic loss at all and it would have turned both presentations into something that would have been unoffensive to almost every traveler....

You thought “The Office” was offensive? That’s nothing. On one international flight, I saw an uncensored version of Crank. Nudity and expletives all over the place.
Hah, it’s not even suitable for adults anymore.
With everybody bringing Ipods and portable DVD players now on flights, I wonder why they even bother showing movies anymore on flights.
Reprehensible behavior like this is why I always take my “Deadwood” DVD’s with me when travelling.
Last time I flew the plane had individual screens on the seat in front of you. They had a selection of about 10 movies for $4 each and live satellite TV for $5 or $6. There was a decent selection of channels. I spent the money for the satellite TV so I could catch a baseball game and for me it was worth it. With technology like this (and portable devices), I am surprised there is still group movie watching.
I was getting on a longer Continental flight and saw they had Direct TV. Goodie I thought - then you had to pay for it. Not too bad of deal anyway - $6 except for all the good parts in the movie get talked over when the pilot warns about turbelance, etc.
On the outbound, I wasn’t paying and they played that stupid Dexter murder thing over and over - I finally figured out to turn the stupid thing off.
10 Movies that shouldn’t be shown on airplanes:
10) Airport
09) Airport ‘75
08) Airport ‘77
07) Airport ‘79
06) Skyjacked
05) Air Force One
04) Die Hard 2
03) Passenger 57
02) Alive
01) Snakes on a Plane
Because not everybody brings those things, and besides, in First Class you have better choices, not in quality, but in quantity.
LOL, Just like in the movie Airplane! when they try to “calm” the passengers by showing movies with plane crashes.
When he said this, Jerry Maguire immediately came to mind. I know that is an older movie but it came to mind because it was one of those that 'reeled' you in long enough and then the scene with Kelly Preston flashes on the screen. I was so pissed off because there could have been other ways to show what a piece of crap she was. This trend started in the 90's. Another that comes to mind was the movie 'An Eye for an Eye' with Sally Field....she's speaking with her daughter on the phone, who is at home at that time, when an intruder breaks in and slaughters her while Fields is helplessly stuck in traffic listening.........very gripping and then 1/2 through, the elitist producers made one of the cops homosexual and one of the members of a victim group a 'married lesbian'. And the list continues but the point is, HW finds a way to hook you into the plot.....and you just start thinking, hey this is going to be a great movie and BLAMO....they drop bombs of filth and ideology.
Perhaps they chose the films based on the average of of customers? I sure don’t want to sit through flghts being forced to listen to squalling kids while being forced to watch a Disney flick!
Your major premise is factually incorrect.
Not everyone brings portable media players. Not even most do.
