The dead end kids (Effects of raising minimum wage, 52.2% unemployment)
The New York Post ^ | 9/27/09 | RICHARD WILNER

Posted on 09/27/2009 7:19:56 AM PDT by Crazieman

The unemployment rate for young Americans has exploded to 52.2 percent -- a post-World War II high, according to the Labor Dept. -- meaning millions of Americans are staring at the likelihood that their lifetime earning potential will be diminished and, combined with the predicted slow economic recovery, their transition into productive members of society could be put on hold for an extended period of time.

And worse, without a clear economic recovery plan aimed at creating entry-level jobs, the odds of many of these young adults -- aged 16 to 24, excluding students -- getting a job and moving out of their parents' houses are long. Young workers have been among the hardest hit during the current recession -- in which a total of 9.5 million jobs have been lost.

I know a young man who had to drop out of college after two years to help his parents make ends meet.

He’s working two jobs right now and has feelers out for a better paying third job - so he can quite the first two.

Oh, and he’s black.

Angrisani said he believes that Obama's economic team, led by Larry Summers, has a blind spot for small business because no senior member of the team -- dominated by academics and veterans of big business -- has ever started and grown a business.

They're all part of the elite. Don't you folks understand? If we only just give away enough government aid, every kid can graduate and become a plugged-in hot-shot lawyer or investment banker! That's where the jobs are!

The only economic recovery plan we need is for the government to sit down, shut up, and leave us alone. We'll recover the economy. Of course, that won't happen with Zero at the top of the Washington dung heap.

...and each time you see a McDonald’s worker put the cup under the machine and press the button to fill it automatically, it’s because of minimum wage laws (along with thousands of other labor laws). As the cost of employing people goes up...automation to do those tasks will increase too.

Angrisani said the stimulus money going to extending unemployment benefits is like a narcotic that is keeping the unemployed content -- but doing little to get them jobs.

Arguably, these sorts of articles are bound to kill their productivity as well if they did manage to find some source of income. Even when times aren't as bad as they are now, I notice articles like this and wonder what effect it has on someone who is younger and likely more impressionable. We kept hearing about ill-informed, young Obama voters last year, but perhaps they're better off not reading newspapers at all. It's bad enough that (depending on the decade) the earth is burning up or the population bomb is going to cause mass starvation, etc... of course, those are the incurable problems. This current situation is mainly due to two decades of government bungling.

No doubt. That’s sort of inevitable. It’s bad enough whether the person at the register will get your order right, but starter jobs serve a purpose and arguably aren’t always all that different from career jobs.

We better hope for change away from the change some people hoped for back when they were hoping for change to what we have now.

YEARS ago I read a Sci-Fi story (made it to Twilight Zone) about a future where people were so stupid, the intelligence had to be built into the tools and machines.

Again, years back, I remember McDonald's pushing for a "student wage" so the "kids could learn". The lower-wage bill passed. Months later I bought a burger and fries at McD and saw the kid punch the key just one time for each item. I looked at the keyboard and saw that instead of numbers, they had PICTURES of the item. (It's still done today). That's when I thought of the stupid people/smart machines story. Yeah, I realize it's less error-prone and more efficient, but after a while, a trained monkey could do that kind of work. You have to wonder what the kid learns, other than to show up and chat with his friends.

By the Bye, if you want to see confusion reign, ask for something that is NOT pictured - like "no pickle."

>> the odds of many of these young adults — aged 16 to 24, excluding students — getting a job and moving out of their parents’ houses are long.

This problem has been going on since the early 90’s when the service sector decided it was more profitable to hire illegals than the local kids.

No wonder the young adults favor the Socialist.

other than to show up . . .

Just "to show up" is one of the important job skills that young people often have to learn.

It's well known in economics that more capital (e.g., machinery) will often be substituted for more labor as labor hikes its wages above the free market level. Another example (in NYC) is that, instead of hiring more unionized bus drivers, the city uses extra-long buses that have an odd-looking, flexible joint between the front half and the rear; they seat about twice as many passengers as a normal sized bus, and it saves the expense of hiring an additional overpaid union bus driver.

Early in the 20th century, attempts at imposing a minimum wage were quickly shot down by the Supreme Court for being what they really are: attempts to interfere with both the right of the employer and the right of the employee to negotiate a wage freely. Specifically, it undercuts the prospective employee's freedom to offer his services at a price that employers might find attractive. For someone just starting out in the workforce (such as young people), minimum wage laws remove the only effective way they have to compete with others who have more experience or greater training. It does nothing but create additional unemployment among the very group it is supposed to help.

My local McDonalds and Burger King are staffed exclusively by surly fourth world bums who cannot speak English and do just the minimum to keep their jobs. In between orders they scream at one another in Niger-Kordofanian or Yaminawa- Indian and listen to their iPods. I have stopped going to them.

I agree with that. I was a busboy while in highschool in the early 70s. When was the last time you saw a white busboy or dishwasher in a resturant. These kids can’t get even part time work because of illegals. Rare to see a teenager working at mcdonalds even. Maybe just maybe if people would stop hiring that gardener or pool man and stay away from the fast food and resturants it would make a diff.

Yeah, that was in the back of my mind. One of the things I told my teen-aged boys to stress when they were interviewing is that they'd always show up on time and not be hung over from a party or rock concert the night before.

As soon as the subsidized unions like UAW die off, the jobs will become available for these unemployed kids.

Unfortunately... they will be working to pay off the dead UAW retiree’s debt (Fed bailouts/’stimulus,’ borrowed from China).

Expanding subsidies... enslaving future generations...what Dems do best.

Where’s the human freedom in this picture???......All gone

Yeah, unless the UAW can take over in places like Tennesee, I suppose they’ll become little more than a federally funded rust belt lobbying group.

I always preferred the sport bar type of restaurants than Wendys or Burger King myself. The wife took me to a small burger/sports bar and the beef was better than anything Ive ever had at Wendys.

Though it was a bit costly at 7 bucks!

Oh but only if they (stupid teens) would SHOW up on time..I'd be a happy camper. A very happy camper. Half the time I dont get a call that theyre even going to be late. Its just "oh..Im late because I had to catch the rest of my tv show"

Good! This is Obama’s base. These are the assholes that came out an voted for him in record numbers. The like him becuase he’s a cool dude.

Another reason these losers deserve to be unemployed: All the 20-24 year olds in my office ani’t worth shit. They are lazy, stupid, unmotivated and cleary don’t want to be there. If I had it my way, they’s all be fired and their be given to someon who really needs it.

Hardastarboard, good post, you got it right. The market determines what wins and what loses.

With government, only friends of 0bama have a shot at winning.
