CA: Failing citizenship - Whitman, Fiorina rarely seen in voting booth
San Diego Union - Tribune ^ | 9/26/09 | Editorial

Posted on 09/26/2009 10:26:27 AM PDT by NormsRevenge

Meg Whitman, the businesswoman-turned-politician who is perhaps the leading candidate for the Republican nomination for governor next year, has largely failed the most basic test of citizenship — voting. Sadly, the voting record of Carly Fiorina, the GOP's hope for unseating U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer next year, isn't much better.

Speaking at a state Republican convention in Sacramento earlier this year, Whitman, evidently trying to defuse the issue in advance, said this: “Voting is a precious gift handed down by generations of Americans. I regret not having delivered my vote on several occasions.”

Several occasions? Try almost never, at least until her own political interests surfaced in recent years.

The Sacramento Bee reported this week that it had reviewed Whitman's voting and registration records in a dozen counties in six states since she turned 18, becoming eligible to register and vote, in 1974 in New York. It found no record of her registering or voting in any of those locales until 2002 in San Mateo County.

Even then, according to the newspaper, she voted only half the time in local, state and federal elections until 2007 when she re-registered from decline-to-state to Republican. She voted four times in 2008 and in this past May's special election.

As for Fiorina, the San Francisco Chronicle reported this summer that she had voted in just five of 18 national, state and local elections in California since she registered in 2000 in Santa Clara County. And, the paper said, she never cast a ballot in two other states where she lived previously.

Whatever other strengths Whitman and Fiorina carry into their campaigns — and there are some — their registration and voting records are, frankly, appalling.

This issue will likely dog them throughout their campaigns. And it should.

The pro-abortion, anti-gun Meg Whitman, handpicked by Mitt Romney, was promoting Van Jones to the media as revealed here.

ACORN is a non-story, trillion dollars in waste is not worth taalking about.... but if you didn’t vote God help you the media will make it a daily front page story... they’ll never mention Rangel’s corruption but God help a Republican who wrote a thesis...

It does appear to be a dereliction of duty - however, if you have no candidate deserving of your vote- are you recommending voting for the least reprehensible or marking a ballot “None of the Above”?

Isn’t there a requirement in some jurisdictions, that in order to be elected a candidate must receive a minimum percentage of those eligible to vote?

Could this requirement be part of the “not voting’ rationale?

I don’t think so.

I look at it as a civic duty thing.

I don’t care how dull candidates or issues are.

That doesn’t hold true for either of these two tho, it seems.

Just what we need, another big-name big-mouth who hasn’t had a connection to Conservatism in their life.

There must be something in California’s water that makes people think that if they have lots of money and want more notoriety, that becoming the Republican nominee for governor is a must do.

Meg Whitman, get lost. The people of California have had enough of assholes who never gave a damn about Conservatism, until they decided to become the titular head of it in our state.

Run for the party leadership where you’ve made most of your donations, and leave the Republican party to people who believe in it’s Conservative values.

Your support for John McCain told me more than I ever needed to know. As I said, get lost.

ROGER ALL OF THAT!!!

My God, these two were TOO BUSY MAKING MONEY (or whatever — it really doesn’t matter WHAT they were doing!) to exercise their most basic franchise as American citizens — A FRANCHISE FOR WHICH COUNTLESS NUMBERS OF OUR FORBEARS GAVE THEIR LIVES TO LEAVE US!

DO NOT PUT EITHER OF THEM IN PUBLIC OFFICE UNLESS YOU WANT MORE OF THE SAME OLD SAME OLD!!!!!!!

Find some conservative doctors or engineers —NO LAWYERS — to run for those positions! THEN HELP THEM GET ELECTED.

Nothing I would love more than to see Boxer out of office.

I live in Marin country and she was a country supervisor here before getting elected to State Senator so she has been making policy here for many years.

I would vote for anyone to the right of her who can unseat her.

Incremental change is better than another 6 years of BB

I can’t wait to see the campaign ads where she demands a General addresses her as “Senator” to show just what a See You En Tee she is.

To me this just shows they are in it for the attention and if they aren’t already they will just be RINOs.

I admit to missing a few school board elections when the candidate in my district was unopposed but I’ve never missed chance to vote in 38 years.

This last election cycle 2 of our friends were opposing each other in the primary for County Commisioner, my husband and I agonized over who to vote for the guy, he won by 2 votes.

To my knowledge, there is no election code in any of our 50 states that precludes you from voting for the person you feel qualified to hold the office. Franchise is a privileged and a responsibility. Vote. Vote for yourself if all others fail your standards but vote.

I have dealt with politicos for almost twenty years. Boxer is like talking to a closed door. She is bought and paid for by her special interests (environmentalists, etc.) plain fact. At least Feinstein listens to both sides and responds to what you are trying to tell her.

I would normally agree with you too, but the track record we have with lifelong politicians - politicial scientists turned lawyers and permanent candidates hasn’t worked out too well in the long run. While not pleased with their prior uninterest in politics, I am pretty sure that we are long overdue for business-minded people who have lived and worked in the real world to try running things for a change. It can’t get much worse than what the lawyers have done.

Yeah, she quickly threw Van Jones under the bus after she realized her mistake. Like I said, she's not very politically savvy. Some people will like that. Many women will like that, I think. Plus, we will need to attract some women away from the ones who will be swooning over Gavin Newsome and his chief endorser, Bill Clinton. She might not be very politically adept, but she is a fiscal conservative. She is not a career politician, but she has a fairly decent career in business. That's what CA needs now more than anything else -- a fiscal conservative with some business sense.

if we are looking folks who know how to merge others and also how to sell stuff.. like surplus lands etc.. these two might be fine..

but we need a little more ooomph than PR these days.

I do hear you on lifelong politcos, it’s like they become gentry , landed&gifted by the people, not the way to endear most voters. .. and now now, lawyers aren’t perfect.. they just act that way.;-)

Hey, I wish a woman like Michele Bachmann could become governor in California (and all other states), but Californians have gotta deal in reality (given the electorate) and work with what they have. It is far from a perfect situation, to say the least.

There must be something in California’s water that makes people think that if they have lots of money ... that becoming the Republican nominee for governor is a must do.

Another viewpoint. They don't seek office. They are sought out.

Why: Because the California Republican Party is broke. They're broke because they have alienated their base and the base has quit giving, Facing a desperate future, they've sought out and promoted self financed candidates whose values are often other than traditional Republican. Without the support of the base, those candidates have fared poorly, drying up corporate contributions. Nobody wants to pay a looser.

As a Mitt Romney liberal I would expect nothing less from you than you supporting his liberal, handpicked candidate for California governor.

Meg Whitman was promoting Van Jones a year after they met on a global warming cruise with Jimmy Carter.

Just like Mitt Romney Meg Whitman re registered as a Republican only to run for office, in her case in 2007.

You can pick them, is that why you signed up here, to promote liberals for Republican offices?

Attacking liberals like Mitt Romney is promoting conservatism and advancing it against it's enemies, even someone that registers Republican can still be too far to the left for consideration as a Republican primary's number one choice don't you think, surely they don't need to be promoted by a freeper during a primary don't you think?

What's the point?

If someone doesn't care to vote, they shouldn't. I can understand the criticism of someone who is active in politics or seeking office. In Whitman's case, I don't think she was doing either before 2000.
