Church mixes politics, prayer on 'Obama Sunday'

Prayer was mixed with a dose of politics at Passaic’s largest black church on Sunday as congregants donned Obama T-shirts in a show of support for a president they say has been unfairly criticized after only eight months in office.

The Union Baptist Church held a “Support Obama Sunday,” asking members to “turn the script” on the “wicked and nasty” reaction Obama has received in some quarters as he pushes for health-care reform. The church’s pastor, Rev. Ronald W. Johnson, said he rarely brings politics into the church but was moved to do so because he is concerned that some criticism may be rooted in racism.

“They are really messing with the man, and they haven’t given him a chance,” said Johnson, whose wife, Myrtle Johnson, delivered an impassioned speech during the service that excluded any mention of racism. “What concerns me is, if some of the other presidents had done some of these things, these people (critics) would go along with it.”  He added, “Racism is not dead,” although he said it’s impossible to know to what extent race is a factor in criticism of Obama.

Former President Jimmy Carter sparked debate over the issue last week when he said he believed racism was driving some of the most intense backlash against Obama’s policy proposals. Republican critics have accused Carter and others of trying to divert attention from a genuine lack of popular support for the president’s initiatives.

On Sunday, about one-third of the church’s approximately 100 congregants wore shirts with Obama’s image and his campaign phrase, “Yes we can.” They shouted “amen” as Myrtle Johnson called for a public apology from South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson, who shouted “You lie!” while Obama delivered a speech in front of legislators. And they stood and clapped when Johnson defended Michelle Obama against “nasty” commentary about her clothing.

“People are always talking nasty, and we need to learn to flip the script and start talking [about] the good things,” she said.   Church leaders said they planned to send a photo of the congregation to the White House along with a letter “to show the president there are still people out here who support him,” Rev. Ronald Johnson said. “He needs a little more time and people have to be patient,” said church member Marlene Harvey, of Bayonne. “I don’t think he’s getting a fair deal.”

They’re obviously not taxed enough.

Give them more taxes to pay.

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables." 2Tim 4:3-4

The question is, is this an actual "church" or a "club?" These people obviously hang together out of their common interests. HOWEVER, these people obviously know nothing of Dear Leaders position on LIFE issues and the issue of homosexuality. Both of which Dear Leader is in total contradiction to the teachings of the "True Leader" of the church! Barack believes the murder of children in the womb is OK. He believes homosexuality is OK. These are just a couple of reasons that people are repulsed by his "leadership" and could care less as to his skin color.

I’m sure Rev. Ronald W. Johnson is well meaning, but he is still a poster boy ‘USEFUL IDIOT’ on this matter.

Why can’t some people simply study the issues and make informed decisions? There are reasons why Obama is being taken to task. They are sound reasons.

I think it may have been racist when the Rev. Ronald W. Johnson didn't ask members to “turn the script” on the “wicked and nasty” reaction George W. Bush had received in some quarters as he pushed for the war on terror; when about one-third of the church’s approximately 100 congregants didn't wear shirts emblazoned with "W", and Myrtle Johnson didn't call for a public apology from California Congressman Pete Stark, who shouted rudely while Bush delivered a speech in front of legislators.

(BTW, I do find many of the negative comments about Michelle Obama's appearance to be cringeworthy... just as much as I do the ludicrous praise that the PC style cognoscenti bestow on her. On balance, this probably still makes me a racist.)

And they obviously have too many liberties. Obama needs to suspend or abridge a few. Or perhaps have Congress pass law creating the official “U.S. Church of Obama.”

Is it even possible to “fairly” criticize Resident (Pres_ent) Barack Hussein Obama, Jr., or Barry Soetoro, or Mr Michelle Robinson, or Sock-Puppet, supposedly the son of an out-of-control teenager and a Kenyan exchange student?

This is a double-bind question, as in, “Have you stopped beating your wife?”

There is no way to answer that question in either the affirmative or negative, as the premise is already part of the question.

because he is concerned that some criticism may be rooted in racism.

The danger with using the "racism" card too often, is that you wear it out. White people will soon not care whether somebody is called a racist, and will instead turn hostile towards the person doing the name calling.

Oh goody!
Then Barry can send it right over to the IRS and have their tax exempt status revoked.

And the DoJ can look into other irregularities with the Church funds and politics. Because I KNOW that A.G. Eric Holder believes in 'The Rule Of Law'.

Really.

I'm 'series'.

Honest.

I agree with your thought to contact the guy. I doubt it will do any good. While he may not realize what Obama is, I doubt we’ll be able to educate the guy. People who back him seem to be incapable of looking at things objectively.

I didn’t see an email addy on the web site.

Anyone who does contact him, I would urge them to be respectful. I know you will be RoT, but I want others to be also.

she wears inappropriate clothing to certain occasions, i remember seeing pictures of her at a solemn ceremony where she had on a short dress with shoulders exposed.

BTW, she needs to work out more, Laura ingraham has much better arms than Michelle.
