In a new editorial, the New York Times is calling on New York Gov. David Paterson, the state's first African-American chief executive, to withdraw from the 2010 governor's race. "As well meaning as Mr. Paterson has been," the Times writes, "he is not the right person for New York over the long haul."

There is no way to read the NY Times article any way other than “We need a Democrat in 2010, and the best way to get a Democrat is if Patterson doesn’t run”.
In their opinion, they say that the goal is to get the strongest democrat candidate possible, and even name that democrat — Andrew Coumo, without saying he is their pick of course.
The take Patterson’s offhand comment that he never wanted to be Governor NOT to suggest that he should resign, but that he could be effective ONLY if he wasn’t running for office at the same time.
Their argument would of course apply to every sitting Governor in the country, but I hardly expect them to write opinions that other governors should refuse to run for re-election because re-elections make them too beholden to special interests.
Which they actually said here — that the unions, businesses, and other special interests would hate Patterson, and he could make better decisions if he wasn’t worried about getting their money and votes.
Which again, applies to any sitting Governor. And worse, that argument means that no person running for election should be getting money from those people, because otherwise they will propose things that aren’t best for the state.
the NY Times did not say a single thing Patterson has done so far is wrong; they merely argue that he should keep doing things that piss people off, and he’ll only be able to do that if he doesn’t have to worry about getting votes in the next election.
It’s almost like the NY Times was saying that it was best for the state if the Governor never had to answer to the people for his actions. Rather than take a 17% approval rating as a sign he should do something different, the Times says that he should ignore the people and do more things which make people mad.

Albany is in a deadlock....both the dems and pubs hate Paterson and want him out........while cutting the budget to the bone he spent a small fortune for rugs in the governor’s mansion.....then this summer the money give away to the state’s parents....$200 for each child in the family of school age........came as vouchers which the parents turned in for flat screen tvs.........the list is endless of his idiocy. He is hated here. Started soon after he took office amid his first sex scandal. Seems he has a wandering eye for the ladies...a blind one at that.
