During six months of the 2009 season, Safeco Field has been a place for late inning home team rallies, one-run victories, quiet and intelligent managing, and rebuilding from the ashes of a 101-loss season.
The stadium will take on a different ambiance when radio-TV shouter Glenn Beck hits town Saturday: It will be the rallying place for those who scream conspiracy, sow tension and tear things down.
The Emerald City is hosting a man who calls Barack Obama a "racist," sees a back-to-school presidential speech as "indoctrinating" children and defends an obscure 18th Century constitutional provision that set in place the slave trade and capped taxes at $10 a slave.
Hustlers attract hustlers, which is perhaps why Tim Eyman took a moment away from his latest initiative to eviscerate state and local government to hail the coming of Fox News' latest peddler of plots.
"Oh, you know we're heading into nut country," John F. Kennedy told wife Jacqueline as Air Force One landed in Dallas on November 22, 1963.
By contrast, this part of America is often dubbed the "Left Coast" by right-thinking Wall Street Journal editorial writers.
Still, there are plenty of "wing nuts" to give Beck a warm welcome. The private reception-with photos ($500) is sold out as well as the private reception-without-photos ($250) and the on-field seats with lunch ($100).
The left is getting lathered. 'Expect there will be plenty of demonstrators outside Safeco Field, chanting "Hey, hey, Ho, ho. Glenn Beck has got to go." Rumbles of economic boycott against Mt. Vernon are hitting the airwaves, the result of a meathead mayor's unilateral decision to give native son -- or nativist son -- Beck a key to the city.
Hey, don't mess with Mount Vernon, or Skagit County.
Downtown is a wonderful oasis to get away from the food franchises of I-5. The area produced activists Helen Day and Sophie Neble, who kept a huge nuclear power plant out of the "Magic Skagit" and kept solvent the utility whose headstrong CEO wanted to build it. Dr. Fred Darvill restored mountain lookouts and fought to protect Cascade wild lands.
While Mount Vernon's meathead mayor honors Glenn Beck, nearby Anacortes is honoring a native son on Dec. 6 with the "Borgen Project Day."
Clint Borgen, a 21-year-old worker in Kosovo refugee camps a decade ago, has grown a one-man project into a web-based movement of volunteers who fight poverty in 48 countries.
It takes talent and cooperation to build a barn, the old adage goes, while any damned fool can burn one down.
Incendiary rhetoric is the baggage that comes with activist presidents.
Anti-Semitic radio priest Fr. Charles Coughlin railed against "Franklin Double-Crossing Roosevelt" in the 1930's and described the New Deal's architect as "the great betrayer and liar."
William Manchester, in "The Death of a President," wrote about the right-wing hate directed at Kennedy, especially in Texas and the Deep South. Lyndon Johnson and Adlai Stevenson had been jostled, even spat at, in the "Big 'D'."
"In that third year of the Kennedy presidency, a kind of fever lay over Dallas country," he wrote. "Mad things happened. Huge billboards screamed 'Impeach Earl Warren.' (Warren was Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.) Kennedy's name was booed in classrooms. Corporate junior executives were required to attend radical seminars."
Demagogues always have enablers, those who stand to make a profit or profit politically when suspicions are fanned.
Wealthy reactionaries of the Liberty League put Roosevelt haters on the airwaves.
Sen. Joe McCarthy said Soviet espionage "must be the product of a great conspiracy, a conspiracy on a scale so immense as to dwarf any previous conspiracies." In the same presidential election, GOP vice presidential nominee Richard Nixon was smearing the Secretary of State with his reference to "Dean Acheson's College of Cowardly Communist Containment."
Billionaire H.L. Hunt underwrote far-right attacks on Kennedy. Nowadays, media plutocrat Rupert Murdoch and Fox News boss Roger Ailes have built a Cable TV channel by niche marketing to one end of the political spectrum.
In doing so, they've tolerated racial stereotyping, immigrant-bashing, culture wars, the spreading of falsehoods -- just about everything that makes up the darker side of the American dream.
Glenn Beck is their star of the moment. Most "wing nut" pundits have a limited shelf life. Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly have shown, however, that you can successfully keep going by finding, stirring up and fanning new suspicions, enemies and sources of resentment.
Character is not a Murdoch job requirement. Alexander Zaitchik in Salon has detailed Beck's ego-filled rise on the airwaves.
At KOY-FM in Phoenix, Beck was competing against radio host Bruce Kelly. His rival's wife, Terry Kelly, suffered a miscarriage. Beck called her live on the air and said, "We hear you had a miscarriage."
"When Terry said 'Yes,' Beck proceeded to joke about how Bruce apparently can't do anything right -- about he can't even have a baby."
'Don't know about you, but I'd think twice about shelling out $500 to be photographed with such a person.
"When Terry said 'Yes,' Beck proceeded to joke about how Bruce apparently can't do anything right -- about he can't even have a baby."
Is there any truth to this? Given the tone of the article, I question Mr. Connelly's credibility. If it is true, however, Beck was way out of line.
Somehow I don't think Greenpeace and the other G20 anarchist protesters are going to be attending a Glenn Beck event.
Again the liberal mental disorder idiots are projecting.
So happens I keep a copy of the final print of the PI in my office just so I can turn my head a little, look at it and laugh when I see articles like this.
To Joel Connelly and the Seattle PI:
Glenn Beck is coming.
Be afraid, be very afraid.
Oh, wait, you already are...
FU Joel. ESAD while you're at it.
You freaks enjoy wasting your time, don't you?
Wow, somebody give this Joel Connelly guy a whole roll of paper towels.
He's foaming at the mouth so hard, somebody is likely to think he has rabies.
Beck is paranoid because he opposes Obummer’s, the Marxist now posing as a Fascist, speech being televised to the kids in school.
The very next story on FR is about how the parents in NJ are up in arms over their children being taught to sing in praise of Obummer, the Marxist now posing as a Fascist.
So much for the genius behind the Seattle news paper.
forgot to add, my wife is not a “wing nut.” She generally hates politics, Glenn is generally the only commentator she can stand to listen to.
Obama is a racist. That affair with his buddy and the Cambridge police proved that.
He all but said, “The cops acted stupidly . . . because he’s white”
If the cops involved had been black, no one would have ever known about the incident.
Back in 1963, John F. Kennedy said to his wife “We’re heading into nut country.”
How despicable. Very bigoted. Very leftist.
The guy is unhinged that is for sure.
Dear Joel, you must seriously be living in an alternate universe. Possibly the fact that Glenn Beck has more listeners in a single hour than you’ve had total readers during your entire career, has you a bit edgy?
You write, “Incendiary rhetoric is the baggage that comes with activist presidents.” Why is Barack so incendiary with his language? Perhaps he learned well from his Black Theology Marxist Minister, Reverend Jeremiah Wright? Ever catch a glimpse of the fiery rhetoric and loud screeds from his former Green Czar Van Jones? Maybe he was educated by the cool, calm and collected William Ayers?
Your cool, mellow president is attempting to completely re-write our Bill of Rights and our U.S. Constitution, without even allowing input of votes from the American people, all under the direction of Regulation Czar Cass Sustein? Hmmmmm....nothing radical, unlawful or unconstitutional here, huh?
Maybe if you spend a little time investigating the root causes of America’s moral outrage, you’ll begin to understand why Obama has dropped from 69% to 50% overall, and lost more than 20% points in approval among so called “Independent” voters. He has rapidly passed Jimmy Carter as the most despised, failed President in history.
Either average, mainstream, “Beck-Americans” are terribly disliking the “Change” they were sold by the U.S. Media and Team Obama, or all of sudden, 20% of voting Americans have adopted Racism as their new value system just 9 months after The Anointed One began “fundamentally remaking America.”
I believe your man has completely misread the very nature of our country and the will of the people. Write me back after the Nov 2010 elections if I’m wrong.
“Real Change” is truly coming.

I was wondering exactly the same thing....
Wow
What a rant.
Gosh, some revisionist use of the word "hater," since it's currently one of the Left's favorites....
I wasn't aware that anyone who disagreed with a president is a "hater." And I wish they HAD stopped FDR's never-ending march to the New World Order.

God I hope so.
Wow. They've kept up the mourning for Kennedy longer than the Boston Globe has up here in Mass. That is definitely some kind of mental disease.
*Back in 1963, John F. Kennedy said to his wife Were heading into nut country.
How despicable. Very bigoted. Very leftist.*
The irony, of course, is that JFK was shot by a left-winger.
Even more ironic, if Beck flies into Seatac, he can conceivably say the very same sentence and be just as correct in his assessment.
I can imagine JFK saying that.
I was in the auditorium in Houston with 500 others when a teacher came in and announced that JFK had been shot. Half the kids stood up and cheered. THEY WERE DIXIECRATS WHO HATED JFK.
If JFK were alive today, he would be a Republican. BUT A COMMIE SHOT HIM.
“Back in 1963, John F. Kennedy said to his wife Were heading into nut country.”
Rumor has it that he would always say that when he was going home to Massachusetts... Of course that’s just a rumor.
I,on the other hand, do in fact, say it whenever I’m heading home to Massachusetts.
It appears that this anecdote is from his booze and cocaine days. I think he’s doing better now.
That commie also took a shot at RIGHT WING JOHN BIRCH SOCIETY MEMBER General Walker in early 1963, something the Angry Left ALWAYS forgets to mention on their way to SMEARING PATRIOTIC TEXANS.
Funny how Oliver Stone never mentioned that in his smear on the CIA and the U.S. military.
That commie was ALSO responsible for Francis Gary Powers
U-2 spy plane being shot down over Russia, another instance of collective amnesia of the collectivists.
That commie ALSO shot and killed Dallas police officer Tippet immediately after the Kennedy assasination.
Dirty Red.
Fuse has generated much of the protest against Glen Beck’s Mt Vernon keys to the city issue. I am sure they will be down at Safeco Field with their protest signs and their harrasment of people going to and from the “Take the Field” rally:
http://www.glennbeckseattle.com/
The "Take Back the Field" rally at Safeco field is being sponsored by Washington's Evergreen Freedom Foundation. The EFF is no way a nut job organization and to sponsor Glen Beck's rally is a tribute to Beck which one would take with high honor. For anyone to call Glen Beck a nut shows a symptom of imparement of one's listening faculties; or worse, a tone deafness to reason.
The problem with Joel Connelly is he is drinking the left wing Kool Aid and reading their blogs too much to know what is reality.
For a look at the Evergreen Freedom Foundation, here is a link to their site:

Pretty bad. If true. And the column doesn't exactly give me a lot of faith it's true.
Rush Limbaugh publishes a transcript of everything on his show, just to preclude fabricated claims about what he supposedly said. I don't know when Beck is supposed to have made this statement - the reference to this supposed remark has no date, no citation of a transcript or other source that might buttress the claim that this remark was actually made.
With Newt Gingrich - the "he loves to crush soft fuzzy puppies with a rusty steam roller" claim made about him involved the suggestion that he served his 1st wife with a divorce complaint while she was in the hospital undergoing chemotherapy. I have never seen any credible information which supports this claim, only that it has been repeated, without substantiation, so many times that it has substantiated itself by modern media standards and is now a self-sustaining legend. Not a true fact, but a fact that everyone knows, nonetheless.
I don't actually listen to Glenn Beck - but I think this kind of pure manufacture is really low. If you put it in a column, presumably you researched it. Show the research. Explain the credible references and citations to that interchange.
Probably true... I saw it in a recent Salon piece on Glen Beck’s life (long article)
#32
I see that the allegation is a repetition, and that it appeared in a Salon article. So, it must be true.
Seattle leftist spin.
Washington Ping?

I still like Glenn Beck....he has repented on air many times

Today, JFK would be considered so far to the right he wouldn’t be allowed to run in GOP.
I don’t know if he actually said it, but he has admitted that he did a lot of things in those days he doesn’t consider admirable.
Hopefully this will cause many people to be curious and come out to see this “nut”. If they do they could get quite an awakening about today’s true political climate.
I think a lot of people will be curious.
Say WA? Evergreen State ping

FReepmail sionnsar if you want on or off this ping list.
Ping sionnsar if you see a Washington state related thread.
Don’t bet against it. It was a well written piece. I guess you haven’t listened to Glenn Beck much and heard when he says he regrets his prior craziness
“Jowls” Cannoli makes hack journalists look bad.
He is a gossip-monger at best. He researches nothing, instead leaning on innuendo and inference. Naturally he gets called out frequently, but won’t defend himself or his screeds unless he can do so from the relative safety of his office.
I once embarrassed him in public by pointing out an error he had published but wouldn’t retract. He called the cops instead. The cop who responded separated us but otherwise wouldn’t interfere as I verbally ripped him a new one.
cannoli is a leftist coward (but I repeat myself)...
And what's up with this?
defends an obscure 18th Century constitutional provision that set in place the slave trade and capped taxes at $10 a slave.
Anyone know what he's talking about?
I dont know but whatcha wanna bet those funds are going to a foundation of some sort.
NWNC reports there is supposed to be up to 500 protesters outside.
And local are threatning to boycott Mt. Vernon businesses if the Mayor gives Beck the Key to the City.
LOL Beck is hitting some nerves if that many show up to protest.
I did not really read the article as the headline told me all I need to know about the view of the guy who wrote it.
Lastly I was hoping some local Washington Freepers would give first hand accounts of the event.
We would love to have gone but lil to far from out Oregon location to drive to/back in one day....we are sick anyway, sucks.
