New Analysis Brings Dire Forecast Of 6.3-Degree Temperature Increase

By Juliet Eilperin Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, September 25, 2009

Climate researchers now predict the planet will warm by 6.3 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century even if the world's leaders fulfill their most ambitious climate pledges, a much faster and broader scale of change than forecast just two years ago, according to a report released Thursday by the United Nations Environment Program.

The new overview of global warming research, aimed at marshaling political support for a new international climate pact by the end of the year, highlights the extent to which recent scientific assessments have outstripped the predictions issued by the Nobel Prize-winning U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007.

Robert Corell, who chairs the Climate Action Initiative and reviewed the UNEP report's scientific findings, said the significant global temperature rise is likely to occur even if industrialized and developed countries enact every climate policy they have proposed at this point. The increase is nearly double what scientists and world policymakers have identified as the upper limit of warming the world can afford in order to avert catastrophic climate change.

Any mention of a 6.3-degree DECREASE?

More and more evidence is building that we are headed for a cooling trend that could be enough to decimate crops.

Anyone prepared for massive food shortages?

Not that I’ll be around by then but I’ll take the 6.3 degree increase. As I’ve said before, what do I think about global warming? I LOVE it! Bring it on! I’m tired of freezing up here in New England. The warmer the better!

It would have to be from something other than increased CO2 levels since it would be impossible to get enough CO2 into the atmosphere, especially from a human source, to result in that kind of temperature increase.

I believe there is a movie coming out about a world in which everyone always tells the truth about everything. Then one day the main character invents "Lying" and finds that he can get away with anything.

In one scene he approaches a bank teller to make a withdrawal. She asks for the amount. He says "$800". She replies, "Oh, I'm sorry, Sir. Our computer indicates you only have $650 in your account. Our computer must be malfunctioning. Here's your $800. Have a nice day."

These climate researchers just lie with impunity, confident that they will get away with anything. Because we have to believe them -- afterall, they have "Ph.D" after their name. Well, I think we're catching on.

6.3 is a nice number if one is fudging data. It has the ring of accuracy. It’s complete hokum, but it sounds “scientific”. I mean if they said 5 degrees, that’s no good. Round number. A nice fraction makes it so much more elegant. Personally, I would have gone to two decimal places and put the value in Kelvin to make it look really nice.

How does “The Earth will warm by 6.27° Kelvin by the end of the century” sound? Marketing is everything!

They are getting desperate. If the sunspot cycle has put us into a repeat of the Maunder Minimum, and we have a colder-than-normal winter, then their public support vanishes.

I think we will have a colder-than-average winter this year.

I saw a clip from that movie where he tells a young lady that the world will end if she does not have sex with him in the next hour. She responds by wondering if they can find a hotel room in time. That very much reminds me of what is going on here - get it done before someone catches on.

Actually, there is strong scientific support for the increased estimate in projected global temperatures in the future.

It was discovered that earlier estimates had erroneously relied upon the “Boogem-Oogem”/chicken bone model when the correct incantation should have been three “Oogem-Boogems” with a rat’s tail. A common mistake for U.N. climatolagists.

In a backwards way, maybe he has... By advocating and implementing foolish, Marx-inspired economic policies that have deepened the recession and have thrown a wet blanket over the future hopes and dreams of Americans, he has indeed reduced energy consumption (manufacturers laying off workers instead of producing and shipping goods). Look for more of that to come. It's the "back to the Middle Ages" strategy in its earliest incarnation...

For example, if 380ppm were enough to cause a 1C increase over 100 years and if it is true that the effect of CO2 on temperature is logarithmic in nature, then you'd need 760ppm to cause the next increase of 1C over the next 100 years, 1520ppm to cause the next increase of 1C over the next 100 years, and, finally, 54,640ppm for the last 1C increase of the 6.3C higher than today. It would take 700 years at this rate.

So, if human contribution to atmospheric CO2 is, say, 7% (though I think it's a smaller percentage), then 7% of 380ppm is 26.6ppm. If humans will be responsible for a 6.3C temperature increase because of greenhouse gases (mostly CO2) and the 26.6ppm represents our global economy's effect on the atmosphere, then to increase the temperature by 6.3C would require increasing the global economic activity by 54,640ppm/26.6ppm or over 2054 times or 205,413%. If everyone held steady at the amount currently produced per person and there are about 6 billion people on the earth, then we'd require a population increase to 12,324 billion people.
