The city of Boston spent $431,000 on overtime costs to deploy 629 police officers, 48 firefighters, and a raft of other workers for the funeral of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, according to information released to the Globe yesterday under a public records request.
City officials said a federal grant for urban areas security would cover $400,000 of the cost.
According to the citys tabulation, Boston spent $359,714 on 629 police officers, $36,748 on 48 firefighters, $29,572 on 55 public health and emergency medical workers, $4,350 on 27 transportation workers, and $1,293 on six public works employees.
The city workers were used to provide security and crowd control during three days of events marking Kennedys death: a motorcade with the hearse that carried the late senators body through the city on Aug. 27; a public vigil that drew about 50,000 mourners to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum on Aug. 27 and 28; and a funeral Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Mission Hill on Aug. 29, which drew 1,200 mourners, including President Obama and many other dignitaries requiring protection.
It was a major, unprecedented security operation for the city of Boston, so I think its definitely a reasonable cost, said Donald E. McGough, director of the Mayors Office of Emergency Preparedness.
The Boston Police Department was stretched thin that week because it had sent officers to the funeral of a Weymouth police officer who was struck and killed by a car, and to the citys annual Caribbean festival, which had been the scene of gang tensions in previous years.

The Kennedy family could make a strong goodwill gesture by writing a check for 400 grand to the city of Boston to reimburse them.
As liberals might say about wealthy conservatives, the Kennedy family can easily pay 400 grand.
Yeah, like THAT's gonna happen.
A small price for the citizens of Boston to pay in order to finally bury the pox they foisted on the rest of America.
....except for Jacko’s.
“The Kennedy family could make a strong goodwill gesture by writing a check for 400 grand to the city of Boston to reimburse them.”
The Kennedy Family has left unpaid bills all over New England for the last 40 years.
They are royalty and we are mere serfs. As far as they are concerned, we exist to serve them.
It's not every day you have to host a funeral for a king, ya know.
This dollar amount does not cover the cost of the State Police, well over 100 thousand.
Well, I’m sure the Estate Taxes paid by the Kennedy’s will cover all expenses...
It was worth it.
Oh, LOL.
For my mothers funeral, we had to have 5 motorcycle cops for an escort at $125 each ($625 for the math impaired), which we had to pay out of pocket. Same rules should apply. They should pay up!
We'll see...When Rose Kennedy died, her estate was settled in Florida in order to avoid the high Mass taxes. She hadn't been to FL within 12 years of her assuming room temperature.
Even in death, the old POS has his hand in the taxpayers’ pocket.
>> It was worth it.
Amen. Too bad the dirt nap didn’t occur shortly before Kennedy successfully pressured the defunding of the Vietnam war (thereby condemning hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese and Cambodians to an early death).
The feds promised to reimburse Pittsburgh for the security and what not at the G20 conference. My guess is that this reimbursement is about as likely as the Kennedys ponying up to the city of Boston.
Oh and if you live in Boston or Massachusetts for that matter, expect your taxes to go up to pay for this extravaganza.
“The Kennedy family could make a strong goodwill gesture by writing a check for 400 grand to the city of Boston to reimburse them”.
...no chance. That would start a dangerous precedent where they’d actually have to do as they say.
All that for a fat, adulterer drunk.
“Oh and if you live in Boston or Massachusetts for that matter, expect your taxes to go up to pay for this extravaganza”
...not much left to take. They’ll have to start confiscating clothes and food.
There, fixed it.
A fitting send-off by a bunch of lazy, overtime, government union workers, all while inconveniently disrupting the lives of normal citizens.
How many children COULD have been insured for this amount?
'Kennedy funeral cost city $431,000'
What's the big deal?
That was Teddy's monthly Bar Tab.
IOW, we ALL are paying for Teddy's funeral expenses. I object! The Kennedy family should reimburse the taxpayers for this display.
This figure doesn't even scratch the surface of the costs that the taxpayers are picking up. Who do you think paid for all the dignitaries to attend? AF1, Palousi's jet, etc.
I believe I saw a report that the city accounting department had planned to post those expenses under “City Beautification” but have been instructed to put some of them under “Trash Removal.”
Good he’s their hero, let them pay the damn bills through their taxes.
“The Kennedy Family has left unpaid bills all over New England for the last 40 years.”
So true. I worked for a landscape firm in the 80’s that did extensive work on Michael Kennedy’s house in Cohasset, MA. (He’s the kennedy that married Vicki Gifford of Frank and Cathy Lee fame. He also cheated on Vicki with his live-in Au Pair. Classy. Eventually he got his just desserts after skiing into a tree while playing touch football. Not sure if the tree was a Republican).
Anyway, the same landscape firm did some work on my parents house 6 years later and the guy said he still hasn’t received the money the Kennedy’s owe him - over $25K
Was there really need for
629 police officers,
48 firefighters,
55 public health and emergency medical workers,
27 transportation workers,
six public works employees?
Boston is one with Kennedy
Let them be one with the bill.
Outrageous!!!!
They should have buried him at sea in a 60’s vintage black sedan. Now that’s something I would have paid to see.
Chivas Regal is still in mourning.
There was an article in the Wall Street Journal about 10 years ago, which highlighted 30 years of Kennedy Clan “chargeoffs”. The saddest one was a small florist in NYC who got an order for $50,000 worth of flowers for a Kennedy Clan wedding. The Kennedy’s never paid, and the florist was forced into bankruptcy.(He borrowed from his credit line at his bank to finance the wholesale purchase of so many flowers).
They are scum.
We’ve saved a couple million with him in the ground the past month.
LOL. No doubt.
So basically we got our $431,000 back the first 10 minutes he was in the ground then....
~~PING!

Untangling a family fortune that reaches back to the early days of the past century is murky business, but the annual federal financial disclosure reports Kennedy was required to file provide at least a’ partial glimpse into his personal capital.
As a U.S. senator, Kennedy earned a base salary of $165,200 a year, but that just skimmed the surface of his net worth.
On the most recent report in 2008, which includes his own assets and those of his wife and any dependents, Kennedy listed a string of publicly and non-publicly traded trusts and assets. Under the filing rules, Kennedy was only required to place the value of those assets within a range, rather than give an exact dollar amount.
The report placed the net worth of his publicly traded assets somewhere between a low of $15 million and high of $72.6 million.
Just a year earlier, Kennedy reported somewhat rosier totals that placed his publicly traded assets somewhere between a low of $46.9 million and a high of $157 million.
Kennedy has other sources of income, including $1,995,833 in royalties he received from Grand Central Publishing a division of Hachette Group Book, publishers of his memoir True Compass scheduled for release in mid-September. Part of the proceeds will go to charity, including the John F. Kennedy Library.
Separate from his personal wealth was Kennedy’s federal campaign account. As of the end of June, Kennedy reported more than $4.5 million in the account.
The main source of Kennedy’s wealth was his father and family patriarch Joseph P. Kennedy who amassed a fortune in banking, real estate, liquor, films and Wall Street holdings that eventually grew to an estimated $500 million by the 1980s.

Hypocrite, makes the poor schmucks pay to bury a Billionaire. They should reimburse the city if they cared about the little guy.
Pray for America
oh well, L.A. also paid for the security at the Michael Jackson memorial service. When you make someone that important, it ends up costing dearly.
