[No. 32][Analysis] Faking Good Health by Kim Jong-il, a Risky Move

- Faking appearance of good health to boost his negotiating position with U.S.
- Smoking and drinking, a result of mild depression, a complication from his stroke
- Ignores doctors' advice that he should have a healthy life-style
- Words among N. Korean high-level officials, "his days are numbered"

Recent reports say that Kim Jong-il's health has improved. He is said to be mentally alert, and his speech, normal. However, this appearance masks the worsening condition inside.

It is true that he has shown improvement in stroke-related complications. Prior to last July, he could not walk without being assisted, but now his condition got better.

However, more serious problem developed. He was suffering from Chronic Renal Failure, a complication from his diabetes, and it had worsened last May. Now he needs kidney dialysis two or three times a week. As a result, his health is down right before the dialysis and back up right after it.

After his health took a dive, his doctors recommend that he should lead a healthy life style, but he refused to heed it. Kim had been a night owl and usually works until dawn and sleeps until 9~10 am. Still his daily pattern, while not really healthy, has managed to stay stable. However, even that regular work pattern had broken down, while he prepared for meeting with Clinton and (Hyundai Asan CEO) Hyun Jung-eun, to the point that his doctors started to worry. However, since he wields absolute power, nobody could have control over his life.

His mental health is also strained. He may look OK, but suffers from mild depression, a complication from his stroke, which made him start smoking and drinking again. He also gets more irritable while making some major policy decisions.

Some of his field guidance are fake. Even when he does do it, it is just a photo-op without real workload.

Kim Jong-il feels compelled to display his good health to the world, because he believe that , without it, U.S. won't sit down and negotiate with him. This makes him take risk to look healthy in public, which only makes his health worse.

His mental capacity and judgment had not suffered seriously yet, though.

If this is true, this explains a pitiful condition he displayed at a large public meeting(sickly face, wobbling gait) some weeks prior to the meeting with Clinton at which he showed a more healthy appearance. The former is right before the next dialysis, and the latter right after it, I suppose.

How many here think he has more than one year left in him...?

My hope springs eternal, yet I have been wrong about this before more than once.

Good info...! Hope he really suffers.

I am of the opinion that he would die earlier than many people believe.
