Katrina vanden Heuvel's preposterous tales of the 9/12 march (Rebel flags and homophobia)
The Washington Examiner ^ | September 21, 2009 | Byron York, Chief Political Correspondent

Posted on 09/24/2009 2:32:39 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Katrina vanden Heuvel, the editor and publisher of The Nation, has just sent out a fundraising letter making fantastical claims about the 9/12 protest in Washington. Promoting the magazine's "Student Outreach Program," in which she and her colleagues offer teaching guides to help educators counter the influence of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, vanden Heuvel described the march this way:

Just days ago, Glenn Beck led the astro-turf 9-12-09 "Taxpayer March on DC." Compared to the millions who have marched for civil rights, equal rights, and gay rights, and against the war, Beck's 70,000 would be small stuff -- except for the tens of thousands waving Confederate flags, anti-gay hate signs, and shouting "White Power!"

Vanden Heuvel goes on to say that students need "well-equipped minds" to stand up to the "increasingly dangerous, racist and radical right wing." That's where the Nation's Student Outreach Program comes in -- with its teaching guides, the Nation Student Essay Contest and Student Journalism Conferences. "Won't you give a gift today to keep this essential program going strong?" vanden Heuvel asks.

Now, as far as vanden Heuvel's description of the march is concerned: I spent several hours there, and I think it would be very hard to make the case that it was astro-turf. Everyone I spoke to had come on his or her own accord, usually with a handmade sign, and paid his or her own way. As for the 70,000 attendance figure -- there are a lot of competing estimates about how big the crowd was, but it was definitely bigger than that.

But vanden Heuvel's ugly charges are the ones in which she claims that "tens of thousands" of people waved Confederate flags, anti-gay hate signs and shouted "White Power!" That is simply false.

I personally do not remember seeing any Confederate flags. But I figured that if there were a lot of them -- much less "tens of thousands" -- the people at left-wing activist sites like Democratic Underground would have pictures. Searching around a little, I found two -- here and here -- and not very prominent ones at that.

As far as anti-gay hate signs, I didn't see any of those either. Perhaps there is a photo out there, but I couldn't find it.

Finally, there were the "tens of thousands" of people shouting "White Power!" I didn't hear that. And one would think that with people from various lefty outfits at the Capitol, video recorders in hand, we would have records of such an event. I did spot this in an article in, of all places, the Nation:

I saw a tall, thin, bearded fellow with a boonie cap jogging up Pennsylvania Avenue shouting, "White power!" A few people looked around awkwardly, not sure how to react, but mostly the crowd just moved along.

If that in fact occurred, who knows what the man's point was? I did find video of one counter-protester who yelled "White Power!" as he attempted to mock the crowd. (He was clearly not welcomed by the actual demonstrators.) Perhaps the boonie cap guy was the same thing.

Vanden Heuvel can say what she wants in a fundraising letter. But she should spare us any further commentary about civility and reasoned discourse.

I didn’t see any white power flags or Confederate flags and I was actually looking for them. In my NYC experience, protests are often co-opted by people who are off topic.

If it happened I did not see it and I was specifically looking

My guess, 500k to 1.5m Patriots in DC on 912. I think the Left has now centered their PR strategy on calling out all their opponents as White & Racist. I think they have made a mistake....but even BJ Clinton joins with the program, there's definitely some coordination between the Leftist factions....maybe just long enough to get the big prize, UNIVERSAL HC?

Dear Katrina:

I’m a poor student and only have a dollar. I figured I could either send you that dollar to fight racists or buy a bag of popcorn to feed the monkeys. So I came up with a perfect solution. Please find enclosed some popcorn. The monkeys at the zoo really liked the popcorn. Why weren’t you there? Do they let out on parole during daytime? Enjoy your half of the bag.

Sincerely,

John Smith

I was there and agree with beakerkin at post #8.

I have never, EVER been to such a well behaved and good natured crowd of ANY size. There was no profanity. There was no lewdity.

On that day, it was okay for strangers to speak to kids uninvited. There were no signs such as the one I saw at the GOE in 2007 stating “WILL SUCK C*CK FOR PEACE” or guys with nipple rings and glitter painted over their thong colored bodies as they roller skated by in their star-shaped Elton John sunglasses.

The Lyndon Larouche Democrats were there with their Obama-Hitler signs.

This article is from the Nation, right?

Fundraising letters are all about tossing some red meat to the punters in hopes they’ll get so worked up that they’ll get out their check books. I get all kinds of pubbie fundraising letters that talk about stopping the evil RAT agenda but of course they never do any such thing. I’ve taken to writing on the return forms that when action matches the rhetoric then maybe we’ll have something to talk about.

Obama’s Agenda for Change and the 2009 Summit of the Americas

excerpt:

'Yes We Can' — Change for the Americas Coming from Below

Hemispheric resistance to the first attempt by the U.S. to force the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) on every nation on this continent led to its eventual defeat at the IV Summit of the Americas, held in Argentina in 2005. The organizers of the April 2009 V Summit of the Americas had hoped to focus on a social agenda of providing a decent living for all those who call the “Americas” their home. The emergence of the PPA, or Bush’s Plan B for the FTAA, represents a threat to the urgent need of having all nations in the hemisphere focus on tackling the disparities that make the region the most unequeal in the world.

According to Obama, “what's good for the people of the Americas is good for the United States.” Among the specific proposals Obama has made (political freedom and democracy; freedom from fear and security; freedom from want and opportunity) in the “New Partnership for the Americas” document, he says that “it’s time for a new alliance of the Americas” that leaves behind “eight years of failed policies” and “top down reforms”, and puts forward instead an “agenda that advances democracy, security, and opportunity from the bottom up”. For Obama to make good on his vision for a new "partnership" in the Americas, the divisive Bush PPA initiative must be laid to rest well before the April V Summit of the Americas gets underway.

The 2009 IV Peoples’ Summit in Trinidad and Tobago

On April 17-19, 2009, the IV Peoples Summit will be taking place in Port of Spain, Trinidad (while heads of state are simultaneously meeting at the V Summit of the Americas). The message of a "change agenda" for the hemisphere will be brought to the island nation by social movements coming from all points in between Alaska and Tierra del Fuego. A key focus for discussions during the People’s Summit will be the economic meltdown hitting the capitalist system, and the opening that this provides for the implementation of a peoples’ agenda promoting sustainable development, social justice, equity, and peaceful coexistence.[ie, communism/socialism -etl]

In conjunction with the Hemispheric Social Alliance, social movements present in Trinidad and Tobago will be providing a "change agenda" that, in large measure, will likely be echoed by representatives from many of the newly elected governments in Latin America and the Caribbean. The V Summit of the Americas will be an ideal setting for Obama to signal a new respectful and consultative role for the US in the Americas as well. Will Obama avail himself of the opportunity to take this courageous step forward? Ojalá!

Profile: Institute For Policy Studies (IPS)

IPS’s [Institute For Policy Studies] Washington, DC headquarters quickly became a resource center for national reporters and a place for KGB agents from the nearby Soviet embassy to convene and strategize. Cora Weiss headed one of the IPS's most successful forays -- into Riverside Church in Manhattan. She was invited there in 1978 by the Reverend William Sloane Coffin to run the church's Disarmament Program, which sought to consolidate Soviet nuclear superiority in Europe -- in the name of "peace." In 1982 Weiss helped organize the largest pro-disarmament demonstration ever held. Staged in New York City, the rally was attended by a coalition of communist organizations. During her decade-long tenure at Riverside, which became home to the National Council of Churches, Weiss regularly received Russian KGB agents, Sandinista friends, and Cuban intelligence agents. Weiss became infamous for her role in the psychological warfare conducted against U.S. prisoners of war held in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" during the Vietnam War.

The Liberation News Service, which is a news source for hundreds of "alternative" publications nationwide (with antiwar, Marxist-oriented perspectives), was founded in 1967 with IPS assistance."

A little background on Leon Panetta, Obama's CIA Chief...

"In April 1985 [Leon] Panetta joined with 13 of his leftist congressional colleagues — including Ron Dellums, Don Edwards, George Miller, Christopher Dodd, and Les Aspin — in sponsoring a 20th anniversary fund-raising gala for the pro-Marxist Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), which had been described by Brian Crozier, director of the London Institute for the Study of Conflict, as the "perfect intellectual front for Soviet activities which would be resisted if they were to originate openly from the KGB." The IPS was originally funded with millions of dollars from the Faberge perfume magnate and Communist Party member Samuel Rubin and his wife."

"Readers who recall the movement to impeach Bill Clinton remember that one of the charges raised by Clinton's critics was the conflict of interest created when individuals connected with the Chinese Overseas Shipping Company (COSCO) — such as John Huang, Charles Trie, and James and Mochtar Riady — helped funnel contributions to the Clinton reelection campaign. Afterwards, the Clinton administration lobbied for granting COSCO a 10-year lease on the former Long Beach Naval Shipyard in California.

During a March 1997 edition of CNBC's Equal Time program, California Republican State Senator Dick Mountjoy noted that COSCO-linked arms dealer Wang Jun had been granted personal access to President Clinton, and that Wang's business associates had smuggled illegal assault weapons into California for delivery to street gangs by making use of a ship owned and operated by COSCO.

Mountjoy then stated:

The next thing you know, (then-Chief of Staff) Leon Panetta is down here negotiating that port for the Chinese.

There is much more to the COSCO-Long Beach connection than we have room for here, but a good summary of the threat the arrangement made to U.S. security may be found in an item inserted into the Congressional Record by Rep. Gerald B.H. Solomon on May 20, 1997.

Even the most unbiased of observers may legitimately ask: Why on Earth is an individual who helped negotiate the turnover of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard to the communist Chinese, thereby creating the threat to U.S. national security described in the Washington Times article by Rowan Scarborough and inserted into the Congressional Record by Rep. Solomon, being considered for a top position at one of our nation's most critical intelligence agencies?"

Yep. Perspective...something liberals have no conception of.

I am listening to “A Patriot’s History of The United States” (by Freeper LS) and it is a GREAT book! In it, he is talking about government corruption in the latter part of the 19th century, and how if a scandal broke, the accused figured out if they just did something else, everyone in the media just got focused on the new outrage and forgot about the old one.

I refuse to use the word “homophobia,” and here’s why.

At the same time the APA — in a purely political move detached from all objective reality — took homosexuality of the list of mental disorders, the social Left coined the word “homophobia.” So, by manipulation of the language, suddenly homosexuals were perfectly normal, but all of us who consider what they do to be sick and wrong were suddenly inflicted with a mental disease, a “phobia.”

The APA made that move, I’m told, at a convention while most of the membership were absent. So it was done by a tiny handful of activists. The move is detached from reality because sex and sexual attraction have an obvious biological purpose. Men and women have complementary parts for an obvious reason. Homosexual attraction is an obvious dysfunction. People of the same sex cannot have reproductive relations, they can only imitate intercourse. But, in this Emperor’s New Clothes world, we are supposed to pretend that there is no difference, and that what they do is “normal.”

It is not. And normal people are not “phobic” for recognizing that fact.

Coulter's take:
Coulter suspects liberals behind Obama-as-Hitler posters

By David Edwards and Daniel Tencer

For conservative political commentator Ann Coulter, it seems right-wingers can do no wrong — and, if they are seen to be doing wrong, it’s the fault of the left anyway.

Coulter says she suspects that posters of President Barack Obama with a Hitler mustache that appeared at Tea Party rallies are the work of “liberal agitators.”

During a discussion on Fox News’ Geraldo at Large on Saturday, host Geraldo Rivera played a clip of President Barack Obama addressing the Congressional Black Caucus, in which the president recounted an anecdote from last week’s G20 meetings.

“One of the leaders — I won’t mention who it was — he comes up to me … he says, ‘Barack, explain to me this health care debate,’” the president said. “He says, ‘We don’t understand it. You’re trying to make sure everybody gets health care and they’re putting a Hitler mustache on you. That doesn’t make sense to me. Explain that to me.’ He didn’t understand.”

“Isn’t it true that some of this extremist rhetoric [is] embarrassing to the United States and our president?” Rivera asked.

“If so, then liberals really did a number on America’s image over the eight years of [President] George Bush,” Coulter replied, going on to describe various hyperbolic protests that took place over the course of the Bush administration.

But in the case of liberals protesting Bush, “it was done much more egregiously,” Coulter added. “And we don’t know that the rare Hitler mustache you see at these Tea Parties was even [done by] a conservative. I suspect they were liberal agitators.”

That made Rivera laugh. “Those sneaky liberal agitators!” he exclaimed.

“Yeah, of course they do that,” Coulter retorted, adding that it is “a way to shut down speech.”

This video is from Fox News’ Geraldo at Large, broadcast Sept. 26, 2009.
