WASHINGTON (AP) - The FBI is investigating the hanging death of a U.S. Census worker near a Kentucky cemetery. A law enforcement official says the word "fed" was scrawled on his chest.
The body of Bill Sparkman, a 51-year-old Census field worker and occasional teacher, was found Sept. 12 in the Daniel Boone National Forest in rural southeast Kentucky.
Investigators have said little about the case.

Someone with the inside scoop on ACORN?
Just, wow...
Sorry, but I can’t help but think-— when somebody tells you to get off of their porch, you really should leave.
most of them are retired people on a pension and college students.
Somebody thought he was a revenuer?
That’s the first thing that came to my mind.
I can easily picture a pushy ACORN type person pushing the wrong buttons in the rural South. Hanging the worker is a bit extreme. What do you want to bet that this is labeled a hate crime?
Something tells me we’ll soon be reading about some right-wing, gubmit-hating, black helicopter-spotting, arsenal-having whackadoodle in a compound....
BINGO! We have a winner!
Daniel Boone’s relatives still fighting for freedom?
My bet is that it's either a suicide, or a crime unrelated to his employment by the US Census Bureau.
The "Fed" is a distraction, either to throw police off the track or to discredit "right wingers".
Reckon he never will.
In other words, hapless dupes.
Sounds like ACORN’s MO.
Countdown to the ‘right wing extremist’ and ‘right wing lynch mob’ comments in the MSM.
Maybe someone thought he was a revenooer ...
Maybe the perpetrator ran out of paint before finishing, “Fed up with nosy questions.”
uh oh
If I had to guess, it sounds like the work of an unmedicated paranoid schizoprenic who thinks the government is spying on him through his electrical outlets and his television. A census worker showing up on such a person’s doorstep would be in a dangerous situation.
The 2010 Census?
I understand this area - the Daniel Boone Forest - is a large producer of marijuana, very much on the order of the old moonshine still operations and not a place that anyone connected to the federal government would be real safe going into or around alone and unarmed.
That was my first thought.
I fully expect the fringe media will try to pin it on Glenn Beck and (as they like to defame them), “the teabaggers”.
Well, he does have them “Yankee-blue” clothes.

Is it 2010 yet? Why are they starting the census early?
Absolutely.
The boots on the ground people are just harmless, everyday people trying to earn a few dollars.
Someone is trying to push public sentiment.
Where was Nancy Pelosi at the time?
Perhaps unrelated, but I recall reading that Daniel Boone NF was one of the biggest pot growing locales east of the Mississippi.
And aren’t those guys harvesting their “crop” about now?
Looks like the census bureau is gonna have a rough time in Kentucky...

That sounds pretty reasonable. If it's the case, it would be appropriate for the wrath of the Feds to descend on that area and destroy every patch of weed in the entire forest. And if a few cultivators get stepped on, boo-hoo.
More’n likely tried to count the people runnin a meth lab. Lotza chemists in those parts.
“most of them are retired people on a pension and college students.....
My 84 year old father, retired Air Force, is working for the census again this year, as he did the last time around. He is a solid Regan conservative, deeply troubled with the direction Obama is taking this country. But....he needs the money and, with his past experience, they grabbed him when he applied again this year.
We are all wondering how long he will last on the job, primarily because of his age. We all think he should be taking it easy, but he always has needed to be BUSY. I don’t think anyone, talking with him, would ever mistake him for an Acorn or Obama minion. I hope.
pattyjo
My thought as well.
Was Fed written upside down and backwards? Inquiring minds want to know.
“college students” = chemists
Hmmm. Will census takers now be armed?
Oh, yeah. Count on it. They’ve got to find that ‘stereotype pigeonhole’. They feel better that way. /s
Danged revenuers!
Don’t forget that LaVoisier was well on his way to identifying the periodic table when he was enlisted to collect taxes for the French government to escape penury; he was a very early example of the efficiency of the newly perfected guillotine for his troubles.

While California is experiencing the greatest threat, drug production on public land is increasing across the country.
1. Most domestic marijuana is grown on public land in California by Mexican cartels.
2. Major drug-smuggling routes along the Mexican border run through federal and tribal lands.
3. Ingredients for methamphetamine production are mainly smuggled from Canada to Mexican-run labs in California’s Central Valley.
4. Most of the methamphetamine labs and dumpsites seized in national forests are found in Missouri’s Mark Twain National Forest.
5. The Daniel Boone National Forest has led all National Forests in marijuana cultivation for 10 of the last 11 years.
During every census, a couple of workers get shot by disgruntled paranoid people.
Hanging is very unusual.
Census takers—be careful; pack heat.
Rocky Top is in TN, not KY.
Actually, I wouldn’t be very surprised if it did turn out to be a right-wing whackadoodle.
It IS dangerous. I used to date a guy who worked as a ‘repo man’. You can just imagine what he had to deal with on a daily basis.
You really need to work on your people skills.
The actual census is a huge, complex project and requires a lot of preparatory work.
By law the actual count will take place 2010 but you can't just go out the morning of the census and start counting people that walk by. You have to know where the people live beforehand and there is no single, up to date data base available with accurate and complete information. The data that is available from other sources is often partial, incomplete and in dissimilar formats.
Remember, people who must be counted live in a variety of places other than houses and apartments; dorms, church annexes, boats, dorms, tents, remote mountain cabins, forest camps, RV's and travel trailers, 18 wheelers, utility sheds, abandoned and condemned buildings, hobo jungles, etc. The only way to know if you have made the most accurate and complete count practical is to build your own data base, structure by structure, street by street, down every dirt road and forest path.
Once you have a data base of the locations where people live you are ready to perform an actual count at those locations.
.
This is so obvious, I can't believe it's not more widely known. We must both be from the sticks!
