ANCHORAGE, Alaska - While walking with his dogs near his house in Soldotna, a snap of a twig prompted Greg Brush to glance over his shoulder.
When he turned, he saw a bear charging full speed at him from less than 20 yards away. Backpedaling, Brush was able to fire his gun once or twice. It was enough. The bear dropped dead.
"Came with zero warning," Brush told the Anchorage Daily News of the Aug. 2 bear encounter. "No woof, no popping of the teeth, no standing up, nothing like what you think."

Gee! A bear charged my wife. She threw a book at it, hit it in the nose, and it turned and ran away. I don’t mess with her. The bear or the wife.

But... what did he shoot the bear with (make/caliber)?Don't know the make or caliber but it appears to have been a pistol.
The fishing guide said he carries a pistol on walks because bears have chased his dogs before. He barely had time to shoot.

Greg Brush stands in the woods to illustrate where he first saw the bear when it charged him as he walked down the center of the gravel road. The bruin's final resting spot is evident.

The claws of a large male brown bear that was killed by Greg Brush after the bruin charged him last Sunday less than a quarter of a mile away from his home off Mackey Lake Road.

Greg Brush was walking his dogs near his Soldotna home August 2, 2009 when he was attacked by a brown bear he later estimated at 900 pounds. Brush shot and killed the starving bear as it charged him without warning, he said. He had spared others on his property.

Season opens in Virginia in a little over two weeks. Don't have any the size of that, but a 350 to 400lb blackie is nothin to sneeze at.

"I have taken deer, hogs, black bear and hopefully elk soon."Since you have the .454 Hold on tight and let the elk have it with that. Recoil won't be an issue at that point.

Wow, thing’s got no fat him. You can see his ribs. Don’t Alaska browns hibernate for the winter and fatten up for it? Smart dude, carrying that revolver! But it’s time for three or four youngish Karelian Bear dogs if he wants a little more warning next time.

What do they taste like ? Deoends upon their diet I suppose. The most exotic meat I’ve ever (knowingly) had was reindeer.

Not as big as one I saw last year in Alaska, guide estimated him at 1400 pounds.
The bear was 75 yards away and our guide had his Remington .375 H&H handy.

The ribs are showing. That bear was hungry and starving. It looks skinny when it should have been fat for winter.

What do they taste like ?Kind of like beef or buffalo. Depends on how they are prepared, and the condition of the animal, and what it has been eating (as you said). Bears that live mostly on berries and such tend to taste better than ones that have a diet mostly of meat. This one looked like it was starved, so he most likely was digging through trash and eating anything he could kill (or find), the meat will probably be of a lower quality. If you're gonna kill a bear for meat, make sure it looks healthy. He obviously didn't have a choice with this one.

Great weapon. Mine is .44 magnum. Mine is too with a scope. Always wondered if it would stop a bear. Guess it will.
To: blackbart.223
This is a bear gun. This Ruger Redhawk started out as a .44MAG, but was rechambered by Hamilton Bowen as a 5 shot .475Linebaugh (405gr @ 1400FPS). This is sufficient for ANY large game in North America, even moose. It has taken a 900+lb Alaskan Brown (similar to this one). It took two shots at just over 40yds (the first one proved to be the fatal one, and the second shot was for good measure).

Modern humans are still worse. I heard a story of how the Vietcong could smell Americans in the jungle; cologne, tooth paste, shampoo, sunscreen, ben gay, deets, deoderant, medicines, fed foods with a thousand ingredients that include preservatives, msg, nitrates, chlorine, etc, etc.
