US pledges to help besieged Brazil embassy in Honduras

WASHINGTON — The United States pledged Tuesday to do whatever it can to help Brazil's embassy in Honduras, which was surrounded by soldiers and had its lights, water and phone lines cut off after deposed President Manuel Zelaya took refuge there.

"Our embassy in Tegucigalpa is in contact with their counterparts in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa and we're discussing what kind of assistance that we can provide to help them during this crisis," said State Department spokesman Ian Kelly.

"It's a very sensitive situation there on the ground, and I don't want to get into the details of what kind of assistance we're discussing."

Honduran soldiers earlier dispersed thousands of protesters who had camped out overnight outside the embassy to protect the man they see as the country's rightful leader, but who was deposed in a military-backed coup in June.

"The United States calls on all parties to remain calm and avoid actions that might provoke violence in Honduras, and place individuals at risk or harm," said a statement read by Kelly before he took questions from journalists.

Let me see, government has managed to make a bad situation worse in Honduras.

So, the proposed solution is more government.

And yet, Democrats still thinks government can’t possibly screw up health care “reform.”

-—————————————————>

Makes sense, it’s what Obama is trying to do right here in the USA.

He accomplished putting the demonstrations down in Iran calling for democracy.

He’s snubbed our allie in Columbia.

And he’s made friendly overtures to the Castro Brother’s in Cuba and Chavez in Venzuala.

Maybe his goal is to have all of the Western Hemisphere run by Dictators. Ironic enough, Europe and most of the Eastern Block Countries will become the world’s best democracies.

Invasion is not out of the question— to rescue Z and restore Marxist rule.

Anything that drastic is very unlikely. Everyone in Latin America, except Obama's Marxist cronies, would be outraged, and even Chavez, et al, are likely to have grave reservations. There is a very good chance that the Yanqui military will be in other hands in 40 months, and the precedent might then be very dangerous.

Is anybody driving by Kelly Field Annex, the old Kelly Air For Base, in San Antonio? We based a lot of the invasion of Panama out of there, and it will be hopping if things heat up in Honduras.

He “acted stupidly” if he did. Sneak Zelaya into an embassy in the middle of Honduras? What did Bummer think Honduras was going to do?

(Or, maybe Bummer was getting tired of Hitlery’s strident harangues and decided it was best to let Honduras moot the point.)

Uh huh. What are they going to do? The Brazilian Embassy has had its utilities cut off, the army has built a metal fence around the entire compound, chased off the Zelaya supporters with tear gas and is jamming embassy cell phone signals. Short of actually invade, a la Lyndon Johnson (and wouldn’t that look great?), what does the State Department think it is going to do? No one can get in or out of the Brazilian Embassy now. Is the U.S. ambassador going to stroll over there and rescue them? How?

Is the US hiding Zelaya in Honduras?

posted at 2:57 pm on September 21, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Here’s a strange story just breaking out of Tegucigalpa. Former Honduran president Manuel Zelaya, deposed by a coordinated action between the parliament, the Supreme Court, and the army, claimed this afternoon to be back in the capital and at the UN compound. Zelaya asked for his supporters to gather there to allow him to reclaim his post, and people have begun arriving. The US confirmed that Zelaya was back in Tegucigalpa, but then the UN categorically denied Zelaya was inside their compound.

Is the US hiding Zelaya?

Deposed President Manuel Zelaya said Monday he has returned home to Honduras to reclaim his presidency, defying threats of arrest and summoning supporters.

While the State Department confirmed on Monday that Zelaya is in Honduras, his exact whereabouts were unclear, possibly in an attempt to avoid capture.

“I cannot give details, but I’m here,” Zelaya told the local TV Channel 36. His voice, but not his image, were transmitted.

He said initially that he was at the United Nations headquarters in his homeland, and Elisabeth Sierra, a spokeswoman for the Honduran Embassy in Nicaragua, where Zelaya had been exiled, reiterated the claim.

“He is in Honduras and calling the resistance to gather in front of the United Nations and protect the constitutional president of Honduras,” she said Monday.

But a spokeswoman at the U.N. offices in Tegucigalpa told The Associated Press he wasn’t there. “I have no idea where that story came from,” said spokeswoman Ana Elsy Mendoza. Nonetheless, Zelaya supporters were gathering outside the U.N. compound, said U.N. spokeswoman Michele Montas in New York.

Well, if the US knows he’s in Honduras and the UN says he’s not in their compound, then the US must either be hiding Zelaya or coordinating with another nation to do so. The State Department needs to explain itself — soon.

I’m pretty sure the Hondurans wouldn’t go through all that trouble if they wern’t pretty sure he was in the Brazilian embassy. Mystery solved. Of course I’d like to know how he ended up there.

Our troops would make short work of them but he ain't sending troops in on behalf of a commie thug. That would give this unreported story major coverage which the administration wants no part of.

Can't believe I am rooting for a Latin American country over my President. What the heck happened.

Yes, as I indicated this was speculation on the initial event yesterday afternoon. This was State’s first reactions to the public.

Strange that the State Dept pretended to not know his whereabouts.

They darn well knew where he was and how he got there..they were coordinating his entry, imo.

I have had that strange, unreal feeling since things went south in Honduras last summer. Our state department had no clue what happened. When it figured out something had happened, it came down firmly on the side of Hugo Chavez and in opposition to the Rule of Law in a small, struggling country. Some days I feel like Washington, D.C. has relocated to a parallel universe, where up is down, east is west, black is white, and the U.S. is Red.

Do you have a link or links for that? I am not doubting you, but I am curious, because I watched their response the very day Zelaya was flown out, and there was no indication they even knew where Hondruas is. Then they played catch-up for a week, and made statements that conflicted with what the White House was saying.
