Pornography and You

No one wants to talk about America's growing addiction to pornography. Certainly not me, but I do quite often because I know it is one of the greatest evils of our day. Like a toxic plague, pornography usage is sweeping our nation and destroying our humanity. Tragically, the largest demographic consuming internet pornography is children between the ages of 12 and 17. As deadly as pornography is to the innocence and development of our children, it has a stranglehold on millions of men too.

Walk by any magazine stand and you’ll see that although porn is difficult to avoid on the internet, “dirty magazines” are still a much sought-after commodity by adult males. While in the airport recently my heart broke at the sight of so many men who spend time between flights thumbing through the pages of “soft porn” publications like Playboy. And for crying out loud, they shamelessly do so in their tidy suits in the plain site of everyone. It will probably shock many of you to hear that these “gentlemen’s magazines” have for years featured photos, cartoons and illustrations of children in sexual situations, including association with adults, animals, and sexual assault. So much for “soft porn”.

When otherwise “responsible” adults are slaves to the smut, is it any surprise that adolescents are easily addicted when exposed to porn during their hormone-driven years? We have never before raised an entire generation on porn, so we don't know how damaging the far-reaching affects will be. A recent edition of Salvo Magazine (a publication I'm honored to serve as a pro-bono senior editor for) entitled “Silent Bondage” paints a grim picture of the future by outlining the harms we now know our children are currently suffering due to their own pornography consumption. Salvo features the work of Drs. Judith Reisman and Jill Manning, seasoned experts in the dangers of porn. Their research shows that the images "encourage and stimulate anger and aggression" in users and causes them to treat other people as objects. Children who use porn have a lack of interest in marriage and in having children of their own, and are at an increased risk of developing sexual compulsions and addictive behavior.

According to Dr. Manning, the type of porn viewed today, by both adults and children, is "deviant, vile and graphic. Young people are witnessing rape, torture, and all kinds of degrading material." Why would anyone gravitate to such horrible inhumane depictions? Dr. Reisman has carefully studied and documented the effects that exposure to pornography has on the brain – it acts like a drug and can easily capture the “casual observer” and result in serious addiction, causing the user to crave greater quantities of ever more perverse images.

If you suspect someone in your family has a porn problem, arm yourself with truth. This column is much to short to delve into all you need to know in order to protect your family. Visit www.SalvoMag.com where you can order the "Silent Bondage" issue and equip yourself to combat pornography's stranglehold head-on.

If you have a pornography addiction, please get help. At www.VictimsofPornography.org you can connect with counseling resources and hear the victory stories of others who have overcome their bondage. It’s critical to understand that consuming porn is never just “harmless entertainment.” Your use warps your view of women and of common decency. It breeds selfishness and unfaithfulness. You might as well be having an affair with every woman you gawk at in the glow of the computer or while privately viewing that hotel room porn flick.

Your wife may be silent about your usage, but she’s probably dying a little each day inside. I’ll never forget the heart-wrenching words of a wife whose husband regularly viewed porn: “It was like my husband had a mistress in our home.”

If you use pornography, you use people. You have a problem. Get help.

This article wasn't intended to be pleasant. Nothing about pornography could be construed as pleasant.

It is an attack upon a pervasive evil that appeals to the perverted.

Walk by any magazine stand...

What about most TV programs - they are all about "entertaining" and titillating; their commercials as well.

Seems to me that as far as societal ills, this one, indeed real, pales to the problem of aborting live babies in the womb.

There is no question pornography adds detrimentally to an already imbalanced society. It is used as a tool for evil to infiltrate. Understanding this is one thing, acting upon it is another.

I can just imagine if Youporn was around when I was a teen how many hours my friends and I would have spent on the site. This site is so accessible to kids now that they all probably know about it, and so the new world and the new access to this stuff is one we have to deal with right now.

re: as long as no kids are involved

Frankly I would prefer my youngster see a film with nudity and sex rather than one where someone is tortured and killed just for the fun of it. My first choice is for them to be spared from both.

And what really bothers me is how so often the sex that’s displayed in the movies is linked with torture, etc.

We live in a depraved world. Thank God, literally, this world is not our home!

the largest demographic consuming internet pornography is children between the ages of 12 and 17

This seems like one of those "scare-ya" statistics, like the one where all the "children" between 10 and 19 are killed by guns, only all but 3 of them were 18- and 19-year-old gang members.

I suspect the porn-use demographic skews heavily toward 16- and 17-year-olds.

Agree. The gratuitous torture in many “mainstream” movies should be addressed also, as this is just as bad as, if not worse, than simple pronography.

I am azwlays amazed that people can sit through movies like Saw, when all it is is people being tortured.

Sick indeed.

This is what loses "conservatives" elections.

Leave the "Acts of capitalism between consenting adults" alone. Yes, it may be morally repugnant. Yes, it may be a sin. But what is more dangerous is advocating a course of action that gives the Nanny State even more power.

Or have we not learned that lesson with Zero in office yet?

What about most TV programs - they are all about "entertaining" and titillating; their commercials as well.

Even McDonald's allows sneaky sexual references into their ads. There's one running now in which a black guy is putting gasoline into his car using a nozzle attached to a very long and thick black hose. His wife looks out the passenger-side front window and asks if he's about finished. Then we see the guy shaking the black hose vigorously with both hands and replying, "There's always one or two more drops."

You just know that the guys working on that part of the ad were yucking it up while they were shooting it. They knew exactly what they were doing.

the images "encourage and stimulate anger and aggression"

Sorry, just not seeing how some nudie pics are going to make a kid angry and aggressive. It must be strange to think that viewing the human form can cause such damage in a child. Makes you wonder how messed up those African bush kids are watching all the women go around mostly naked all day.

Why should they see either one?

We parents need to be parents. I don't care what “everyone else” watches. Bad is bad, debased is debased.

This kind of stuff rots the soul and the mind. I'm sure the statistics are there to show that most rapes and other sex crimes are highly linked to porn.

There are other perspectives. For example, two questions in the following order;

1.)Is advertising as a business, effective?

2.)Are images used in advertising?

I think 50% of the article is absolutely correct, true porn has become an enormous business and proccupation and there is a lot of deviant stuff out there. The number of people out are actually in porn must be huge too.

However, she lost me by only referring to the abuse of women by men viewing porn. Women today are not the innocents of yesteryear. Many have been ruined by the porn culture. Why is her article only directed at men? Typical womens’ lib approach.

re: simple pornography

I find it problematical that so many people today define simple nudity as porn. I'm not for children seeing images of nude people, but there's a huge difference between seeing a nude person and seeing sex acts.

I remember a bumper sticker from a nearby nudist resort back in the 70’s, “If God had intended for us to run around naked, He would have had us born that way!”

Hmmm... Kinda hard to take issue with that! But I'm sure Church Lady would have something to say about it.
