Clinton: Zelaya's return could help Honduras crisis
AFP ^ | Sept. 21, 2009

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Costa Rican President Oscar Arias said Monday that ousted leader Manuel Zelaya's surprise return to Honduras offers an opportunity to end the country's political crisis.

"Now that President Zelaya is back it would be opportune to restore him to his position under appropriate circumstances, get on with the election that is currently scheduled for November, have a peaceful transition of presidential authority and get Honduras back to constitutional and democratic order," Clinton told reporters as she met with Arias in New York.

Arias, who brokered failed peace talks between the Zelaya camp and the interim government, was also hopeful about a political resolution.

"I think this is the best opportunity, the best time, now that Zelaya is back in his country," he said.

Ousted president Zelaya on Monday made a surprise return to the Central American nation almost three months after soldiers expelled him at gunpoint.

A smiling Zelaya, sporting his trademark cowboy hat, appeared back in the capital on the balcony of the Brazilian embassy in the first images broadcast on local television.

It will end in November when an election is held without Zelaya.

Yep, just saw this on RedState also.

Barry and Hillary gonna have some ‘splainin to do!!!! They say Mrs. Zelaya is being protected in the US Embassy.

I hope and pray for no violence in Honduras and that our government will stand tall for the Honduran citizens. I really fear for them right now. Our government is so corrupt with this communist in the White House, I don’t see any support for them!

What “crisis?” The crisis was averted when the govt of Honduras followed their own constitution and enforced the law in removing Zelaya.

Makes me wonder if Zelaya wasn’t delivered to the Brazilian embassy by the American embassy.

Why does this “Honduran Crisis” sound so remarkably like our “Healthcare” crisis? Perhaps it is just as synthetic?

The Supreme Court of Honduras has constitutional and statutory authority to hear cases against the President of the Republic and many other high officers of the State, to adjudicate and enforce judgments, and to request the assistance of the public forces to enforce its rulings."

A report filed at the Library of Congress by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) provides what the administration has not offered, a serious legal review of the facts. "Available sources indicate that the judicial and legislative branches applied constitutional and statutory law in the case against President Zelaya in a manner that was judged by the Honduran authorities from both branches of the government to be in accordance with the Honduran legal system," writes CRS senior foreign law specialist Norma C. Gutierrez in her report

Well Aristide was thrown out of Haiti and Clinton returned him to power. The Haitians were going to eliminate him themselves but Bush rescued him by getting him out of the country.

Aristide got to safety and immediately started claiming we kidnapped him.

We gotta stop helping these petty dictators in any way shape or form. The people seem to be far more effective at removing them permanently.

Yeah, and what was our involvement with Hugo’s rise to power. GWB really screwed the pooch on that one. With all the talk about history coming to appreciate George as time moves on, that may end up being the biggest blotch on GWB’s record when we lose Central and South America. The anti-Monroe Doctrine is in effect. Worse, not only are we allowing external intervention, we’re facilitating it for crying out loud.

Your right. GWB should have fought harder to stop Chavez from coming to power....in 1998. Yeah, he should have used his commander in chief powers as Governor of Texas to stop Chavez.

That failure was caused by the new president whose first announcement was the scrapping of the Venezuelan constitution.

When the Generals heard that, they stopped the process of tossing out Chavez, turned him around, and re-installed him.

Here is a Honduran's take on the Zero administration position--I'd be interested to know what Freepers think....

Personally I think he's giving Zero and the Pantsuit way too much credit!

Uh, his rise to power predated the election of Bush by nearly two years!!!

True there was a failed coup against Chavez during the Bush years, but you can’t blame this one on Bush. It’s all Billy Boy and he didn’t give a damn about a Marxist’s rise to power in a second world latin American country.

I saw this sign from the March at Washington. Maybe it ticked Obama off and he didn't want us getting any ideas.

Photobucket

I used to be a Democrat, by the way. But I never remember ANY Dem president being this black (as in evil). I sometimes count heads at daily Mass to see if attendance has picked up with all this devilish stuff going on, and today, for the first time, it was doubled. It could have been happenstance ... or maybe not.

I agree. The author is trying way too hard to warp this into something other than what it is - Obama helping fellow wanna be Marxist strongmen - in this case Bolivarian Marxists. Chavez lacks the capacity to launch a naval and ground invasion of Honduras. It is more likely he would try to assist via infiltration from Nicaragua.
