Technically, he is still NOT in the country.

Embassies belong to the country they are for.

Right technically he is not in the country, but the Hondurans just need to kill him. That is the only solution to the problem of a would be tyrant who will not obey the law.

Brazil is playing a dangerous game.

Were I in charge in Honduras, troops would be escorting everyone in the former embassy out of the country. Zelaya would be shot trying to escape.

I also lack patience.

Too bad the embassy is considered ‘sovereign foreign soil’ in this instance.
Of course, they could declare the mebassy to be null and void, and give them a set amount of time to vacate.
Especially since Zalaya isn’t there for benign reasons.

As I posted on a concurrent thread on this, I'm just concerned that an attack of any kind on an embassy would provide pretext for invading and occupying Honduras, thus bringing down the legitimate government faster.

My concern on the other thread (he was thought to be in the UN building) was that the pretext would be for a UN "police action."

My concern if he is in the Brazilian embassy is whether Chavez is in cahoots with them (e.g., a "mutual defense" treaty) and this is a setup to provide Chavez with cover to attack Honduras.

Of course I guess it can be assumed that Chavez figures he doesn't need a pretext...he's Chavez. LOL

What a horrible, deceitful evil thing for Brazil to do. Well, Brazil and Obama, because Brazil sure wouldn’t have done it unless they had gotten the green light from the OAS, the UN and Bambi.

Every time when I think I can’t get more disgusted at the man, he reaches yet another low and I do get more disgusted.

Zelaya is committing suicide. If he believes his crowds of thugs and commies will shield him from the rest of the country he's insane. He's outnumbered probably more than 10 to 1, and the only military forces that will likely support him will be external to Honduras.

This garbage played out a lot better when the “peasants” were ignorant and disorganized, like perhaps Cuba half a century or so back. Thanks to modern day technology, the majority of Hondurans seem to be neither and understand him for what he is.

Is the US hiding Zelaya in Honduras?
posted at 2:57 pm on September 21, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Here’s a strange story just breaking out of Tegucigalpa. Former Honduran president Manuel Zelaya, deposed by a coordinated action between the parliament, the Supreme Court, and the army, claimed this afternoon to be back in the capital and at the UN compound. Zelaya asked for his supporters to gather there to allow him to reclaim his post, and people have begun arriving. The US confirmed that Zelaya was back in Tegucigalpa, but then the UN categorically denied Zelaya was inside their compound.

Is the US hiding Zelaya?

Deposed President Manuel Zelaya said Monday he has returned home to Honduras to reclaim his presidency, defying threats of arrest and summoning supporters.

While the State Department confirmed on Monday that Zelaya is in Honduras, his exact whereabouts were unclear, possibly in an attempt to avoid capture.

“I cannot give details, but I’m here,” Zelaya told the local TV Channel 36. His voice, but not his image, were transmitted.

He said initially that he was at the United Nations headquarters in his homeland, and Elisabeth Sierra, a spokeswoman for the Honduran Embassy in Nicaragua, where Zelaya had been exiled, reiterated the claim.

“He is in Honduras and calling the resistance to gather in front of the United Nations and protect the constitutional president of Honduras,” she said Monday.

But a spokeswoman at the U.N. offices in Tegucigalpa told The Associated Press he wasn’t there. “I have no idea where that story came from,” said spokeswoman Ana Elsy Mendoza. Nonetheless, Zelaya supporters were gathering outside the U.N. compound, said U.N. spokeswoman Michele Montas in New York.

Well, if the US knows he’s in Honduras and the UN says he’s not in their compound, then the US must either be hiding Zelaya or coordinating with another nation to do so. The State Department needs to explain itself — soon.

If I was Micheletti, I’d not get too worked up. Don’t want to provoke an excuse for the UN to invade.

Maybe an announcement: “Honduran officials are aware that Mr. Zeleya enjoys the hospitality of Brazilian hosts. As a sovereign territory Mr. Zeleya is welcome to enjoy his stay; however, should he decide to stroll off the premises, Honduran police will be obliged to detain him and place him under arrest for violations of the Honduran Constitution and pursuant to the arrest warrant issued several months ago.”

Hiding the ousted renegade Presidente of Honduras in their Embassy isn’t something one would expect from Brazilian leadership IMO, but then perhaps I need update my knowledge of that Nations Politics.

I was thinking the same thing. It doesn't matter who is the good guy and who is the bad guy in this saga: an embassy inviting and giving sanctuary to a fugitive from the host country is completely unacceptable.

Honduras should simply kick them all out of the country -- not by force, but by edict.

It’s tradition to hide the deposed Presidente on embassy grounds. It has happened many times over the last fifty years. Ex-Presidents are rarely shot,as the current President has to consider his future as well.

In this case, I would add treason to the other charges. The trouble comes only because of the Joker in the White House. Impeach and convict Obama. Convict and sentence Zelaya.
