When are taxes not taxes: President Obama and ABC News' George Stephanopoulos
foxnews ^ | 9/20/09 | Kimberly Schwandt

Posted on 09/20/2009 2:31:04 PM PDT by bestintxas

President Obama and ABC News' George Stephanopoulos got in a testy sparring match Sunday over whether the president's health care plan includes a tax increase, leading the host to look up the Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of taxes.

In the interview airing Sunday, Stephanopoulos pressed the president on his plan to require people to purchase health insurance.

"Under this mandate, the government is forcing people to spend money, fining you if you don't. How is that not a tax?" the host asked.

Obama responded: " No, but -- but, George, you -- you can't just make up that language and decide that that's called a tax increase."

Stephanopoulos then offered the dictionary definition.

Anyone want to bet he will also say that when the Bush tax cuts expire next year and everyone's taxes go up he will not call that a tax increase either?

Later in the interview, Obama said that the use of the dictionary definition of “taxes” was “stretching” by the interviewer.

I love it. Even a lefty like George S. has got to see, “Holy CRAP, this Obama’s a nut: the DICTIONARY DEFINITION is “stretching” IF it conflicts with Obama’s rhetoric??

Wow.

“Through the Looking Glass” revisited:

I don’t know what you mean by “taxes”,’ George said.

Barack Hussein smiled contemptuously. `Of course you don’t — till I tell you. I meant “there’s a nice knock-down argument for you!”’

`But “taxes” doesn’t mean “a nice knock-down argument”,’ Alice objected.

`When I use a word,’ Barack Hussein said, in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’

`The question is,’ said George, `whether you can make words mean so many different things.’

`The question is,’ said Barack Hussein, `which is to be master — that’s all.’

George was too much puzzled to say anything; so after a minute Barack Hussein began again. `They’ve a temper, some of them — particularly verbs: they’re the proudest — adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs — however, I can manage the whole lot of them! Impenetrability! That’s what I say!’

`Would you tell me please,’ said George, `what that means?’

`Now you talk like a reasonable child,’ said Barack Hussein, looking very much pleased. `I meant by “impenetrability” that we’ve had enough of that subject, and it would be just as well if you’d mention what you mean to do next, as I suppose you don’t mean to stop here all the rest of your life.’

`That’s a great deal to make one word mean,’ George said in a thoughtful tone.

`When I make a word do a lot of work like that,’ said Barack Hussein, `I always pay it extra.’

(The above is a repost, from a similar thread — I thought it fit here too.)

I have a question about “George”. I’m sure there might be some PUMA’s that lurk on here.

Is George still loyal to the Clinton’s? or has he followed the Obamamessiah like so many of the former Clinton crowd?

It’s also cowardly. Steffie reached for a dictionary rather than stand his ground on what and what isn’t a tax when any fool can tell the difference despite the ‘charisma’ of the person opposite telling porkies.

In the Kenyan dictionary, that is not what "taxes" means.

Easy to see where Obambi got tripped up on that one.

Even more interesting, I wonder if Spooning-Stephy will be trashed by the KOSsacks for whipping out a dictionary, as if to imply that _resident jOker doesn't know the definition of 'taxes'.

The First Thug is all-knowing, with the mind of a Star Trek Vulcan, whose IQ is 'off the charts'. To read from a dictionary in the presence of 'The Won' is so demeaning.

Spooning-Stephy must be racist.

"Under this mandate, the government is forcing people to spend money, fining you if you don't. How is that not a tax?"

It's worse than that. I would assume, as with any other fine, if you cannot pay it or refuse to pay it that somewhere down the road a judge would issue a warrant for you and you would be arrested and put in jail. So essentially, the government will be locking people up for the "crime" of not participating in Obamacare.

To post 2 - Excellent! This is yet another crack in Obama's dam, ie, Dems even liberal ones becoming aghast at what he proposes as well as the duplicitious methods he yields to achieve his 'dream for America',
This all bodes well for conservatives next Nov IF they show up with spines intact.
And to use a trite phrase a 'perfect storm' is gathering for 2012 and the national assent of Sarah Palin!

The Bush tax cuts -- which were passed by a Republican Congress and signed by Bush himself -- were designed to expire next year.

If the GOP had any stones they wouldn't have included a sunset provision on those tax cuts.

Obama tries hard to technically not be a liar. Unless the 2 month rule on his statements and political positions has expired. He bends the truth, omits details, let's other take the blame for policies he agrees with, then cuts bait and throws them to the sharks if they prove to be political kryptonite, and plays sleight of hand with words and concepts. He'll throw anyone under the bus. He is totally inept at politics, and he's quickly earning the title of Great Divider. He's got all of Carter and Clinton's bad political habits, and none of Clinton's ducking and dodging skills.

It's going to be Reagan 2.0 next election, but mark my words, the reason they're trying to push this health care bill so hard, is they're going to grant amnesty to the illegals in this country before the 2010 elections. They're hoping those grateful voters will keep them afloat and in control through the 2010 and 2012 elections.

If he does not call that a tax increase, then by symmetry, it follows that when everyone's taxes went down under Bush THAT WAS NOT A TAX CUT. So he is lying about some mythical tax cut that never happened.

ONCE AGAIN, HE IS DEMONSTRATED TO BE A LIAR.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

Stephanopoulos makes the mistake of perpetuating the false notion that America is still a republic. In fact, we are now a socialist welfare state and headed down the road of state ownership of ALL assets; i.e., the road abandoned by China and the Soviet Union as being utterly destructive of a nation.

The conclusion simply cannot be avoided that either Obama has learned nothing whatsoever from history or Obama is deliberately and consciously seeking the destruction of the United States.

Any other conclusion simply won’t fly.

Or look at it Obama’s way—and we could eliminate taxes all together:

Locally, we could have mandated education, police, roads and garbage insurance.

Nationally, we could have mandated income redistribution, retirement, defense and disaster insurance.

Globally, we could have mandated equal-income insurance.

See? There’s no need for any more taxes at all!
