President Obama and ABC News' George Stephanopoulos got in a testy sparring match Sunday over whether the president's health care plan includes a tax increase, leading the host to look up the Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of taxes.
In the interview airing Sunday, Stephanopoulos pressed the president on his plan to require people to purchase health insurance.
"Under this mandate, the government is forcing people to spend money, fining you if you don't. How is that not a tax?" the host asked.
Obama responded: " No, but -- but, George, you -- you can't just make up that language and decide that that's called a tax increase."
Stephanopoulos then offered the dictionary definition.

Later in the interview, Obama said that the use of the dictionary definition of “taxes” was “stretching” by the interviewer.
I love it. Even a lefty like George S. has got to see, “Holy CRAP, this Obama’s a nut: the DICTIONARY DEFINITION is “stretching” IF it conflicts with Obama’s rhetoric??
Wow.
******Anyone want to bet he will also say that when the Bush tax cuts expire next year and everyone’s taxes go up he will not call that a tax increase either? *******
He will say he inherited that tax increase.
Through the Looking Glass revisited:
I dont know what you mean by taxes, George said.
Barack Hussein smiled contemptuously. `Of course you dont till I tell you. I meant theres a nice knock-down argument for you!
`But taxes doesnt mean a nice knock-down argument, Alice objected.
`When I use a word, Barack Hussein said, in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean neither more nor less.
`The question is, said George, `whether you can make words mean so many different things.
`The question is, said Barack Hussein, `which is to be master thats all.
George was too much puzzled to say anything; so after a minute Barack Hussein began again. `Theyve a temper, some of them particularly verbs: theyre the proudest adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs however, I can manage the whole lot of them! Impenetrability! Thats what I say!
`Would you tell me please, said George, `what that means?
`Now you talk like a reasonable child, said Barack Hussein, looking very much pleased. `I meant by impenetrability that weve had enough of that subject, and it would be just as well if youd mention what you mean to do next, as I suppose you dont mean to stop here all the rest of your life.
`Thats a great deal to make one word mean, George said in a thoughtful tone.
`When I make a word do a lot of work like that, said Barack Hussein, `I always pay it extra.

I have a question about “George”. I’m sure there might be some PUMA’s that lurk on here.
Is George still loyal to the Clinton’s? or has he followed the Obamamessiah like so many of the former Clinton crowd?
BO thinks he is God, so he is never wrong...even when he is making a fool of himself on national TV.
That’s good. It wouldn’t surprise me to hear him utter that.
Indeed. It has come to that.
steph got him on that
Whatever he says, the polar opposite is true.
Keep flapping your gums, Kenyan. With every syllable, everyone outside of your Tingly Media machine believes you less and less.
Let's throw it back at them.
It’s also cowardly. Steffie reached for a dictionary rather than stand his ground on what and what isn’t a tax when any fool can tell the difference despite the ‘charisma’ of the person opposite telling porkies.
Easy to see where Obambi got tripped up on that one.
Yo! Stephi!
Look out for busses, Baby.
I stated the same this AM on another thread.
The Bush tax cuts being reversed will be considered a return to normalcy by the Fascist in chief.
Obama’s next czar will be the Dictionary Czar.
Definitions R US
Obama's right ya know. It's an unfunded mandate. : )
The First Thug is all-knowing, with the mind of a Star Trek Vulcan, whose IQ is 'off the charts'. To read from a dictionary in the presence of 'The Won' is so demeaning.
Spooning-Stephy must be racist.
I can’t believe what I just saw! George not letting him skate by ????
It's worse than that. I would assume, as with any other fine, if you cannot pay it or refuse to pay it that somewhere down the road a judge would issue a warrant for you and you would be arrested and put in jail. So essentially, the government will be locking people up for the "crime" of not participating in Obamacare.
If the GOP had any stones they wouldn't have included a sunset provision on those tax cuts.
What at first was plunder assumed the softer name of revenue. ~Thomas Paine
Look for new tax on dictionaries soon.
George S wishes for the Clinton’s to return, LOL!
LOL....Dufus...LOL
It's going to be Reagan 2.0 next election, but mark my words, the reason they're trying to push this health care bill so hard, is they're going to grant amnesty to the illegals in this country before the 2010 elections. They're hoping those grateful voters will keep them afloat and in control through the 2010 and 2012 elections.
If he does not call that a tax increase, then by symmetry, it follows that when everyone's taxes went down under Bush THAT WAS NOT A TAX CUT. So he is lying about some mythical tax cut that never happened.
ONCE AGAIN, HE IS DEMONSTRATED TO BE A LIAR.
“War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength.”
When the Bush tax cuts expire it will be called the Bush tax increase. Poor Obama just inherited the Bush tax increase.
Note to President Obama: I don’t think anyone over the age of 10 accepts “because I said so” as a legitimate response.
George looked flabberghasted.
Reminds me of “I never raised taxes” Romney, who raised pretty much every citizen expense that wasn’t specifically called a “tax.”
Notice that 0bama was allowed to lecture, uninterrupted for 2 minutes and 42 seconds during this segment. I am sure Bush was given the same chance during his interviews.
One ...more...time...for the ten thousandth time....(drum roll)
BUSH'S FAULT!!! (symbol crash)
What is truly impressive Lorianne is that you were actually able to notice a difference. ; )
Watch we get a word czar who requests a change to Webster’s definition of tax.
What I’d like to hear...
Steponallufus to Obama... “With all due respect, Mr. President, that is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard an educated person say!”
THAT would be a moment to remember... ;^)
That was exactly my reaction.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.
Stephanopoulos makes the mistake of perpetuating the false notion that America is still a republic. In fact, we are now a socialist welfare state and headed down the road of state ownership of ALL assets; i.e., the road abandoned by China and the Soviet Union as being utterly destructive of a nation.
The conclusion simply cannot be avoided that either Obama has learned nothing whatsoever from history or Obama is deliberately and consciously seeking the destruction of the United States.
Any other conclusion simply won’t fly.
All that needs to be done is this tax cut be made permanent now.
Again....One....more...time...Bush's fault! (symbol crash)
OMG we already have a Scrabble Czar in my household.
Maybe we could be of some service!
one more time,,,,yep this one is Bushes fault....but we will never agree on that....difference of opinion is what makes a good horse race..
If the government takes my money, and I have no choice in the matter, it’s a tax.
Yes, Georgie S. is not Chrissie M.—as far as Obama is concerned.
Yes! I was there (MA) then, and I’m surprised Romney doesn’t get called on that more often. He was inventing and increasing ‘fees’ left and right.
Or look at it Obama’s way—and we could eliminate taxes all together:
Locally, we could have mandated education, police, roads and garbage insurance.
Nationally, we could have mandated income redistribution, retirement, defense and disaster insurance.
Globally, we could have mandated equal-income insurance.
See? There’s no need for any more taxes at all!
