Airplane shoe bomber Richard C. Reid no longer faces severe limits on his prison activities or communications after the Obama administration quietly ended years of hard-nosed curbs against the British-born al-Qaeda terrorist.
This summer the Justice Department halted six years of measures that kept Reid from associating or praying with fellow jailed Muslim terrorists, and limited his access to the news media and pen pals.
That move has outraged victims of al-Qaeda and security experts. The recommendation to lift the restrictions was made with input from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston, which prosecuted Reid in 2002, federal officials said...
Over the last six years, the U.S. Justice Department annually renewed special restrictions on Reid, including limits on who he could call and write to and on the kinds of articles he could read or TV channels he could watch. They also banned him from group prayers.
Reid, 36, appealed the restrictions within the federal Bureau of Prisons several times, to no avail. In 2007, the London-born terrorist filed a lawsuit against the government alleging the restrictions violated his First Amendment rights.
On June 17 - after two years spent fighting Reid’s lawsuit - federal prosecutors notified the courts that the restrictions, called “special administrative measures,” or SAMs, would not be renewed.
The decision to let the SAMs lapse was based on a “collective assessment of the potential threat posed by Reid’s communications and contacts,” said Department of Justice spokesman Dean Boyd.
That assessment was made by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston, the FBI and the DOJ counterterrorism section, Boyd said.

This administration has spent its whole time easing restrictions on terrorists, seeking to make them more comfortable, and all the while, restricting our abilities to fight them in the middle east. He has done everything he possibly can to coddle our enemies while weaking our own abilities. Can there be any doubt that he shares the ideas and feelings of Jerimiah Wright???
But have we sent him an apology yet? Otherwise he should continue his lawsuit until we submit or pay tribute.

The Uighurs (Chinese Muslims) had been in detention since 2001, despite the U.S. military having admitted that they were never members of Al Qaeda or the Taliban, and pose no danger to the United States.
The only rights he should have at all are the right to a damp dank dark hard floored cell in the basement of the prison. No radio, TV, books or other people to converse with.

As well, your blanket claim of dismissal of all harm by the military is ridiculously untrue - it is a lie made big so as to try to block being challenged. Nevertheless, and just off hand, exactly what do you think Chinese Muslims were doing in the middle of a Middle East war zone when they were picked up, hmm? Attending weddings in the middle of the night? Buying needles? Expressing gentle, spiritual cultural behaviors white people can't possibly hope to understand because of our bigoted patriarchal dominance and blind aggression against "the other"?
Can't hurt the US? If Uighurs help smuggle nuclear bomb materials from the Middle East into China, does that "hurt the US"? How about into Europe? How about Canada or Mexico? When do liberal calculations rise up out of the dope smoke and say, "dude, this is getting serious"? Does a white hot flash have to take out an American city first? Is that the level of blood sacrifice you'd find sufficient?
