HOBOKEN - Authorities seized more than two dozen firearms from a house on Garden Street on Friday after neighbors spotted a resident brandishing a handgun on his front stoop, authorities said.
The man, who was not immediately charged or identified, was taken into custody without incident when police officers arrived at the scene, said Capt. James Fitzsimmons of the Hoboken police.
The incident was reported around 11:15 p.m. by a neighbor who saw an armed man standing at a window in the 600 block of Garden Street. The man walked onto his front stoop holding the firearm, witnesses told police, though he did not appear to be threatening anyone with it, Fitzsimmons said.
After the man was arrested, Hoboken police and the Jersey City police Emergency Services Unit searched the man's house and back yard, Fitzsimmons said.
They found "a number of rifles and shotguns," Fitzsimmons said, adding that as many as 30 were found in an initial search. "The search continues at the moment," he said.
"There were a few hand grenades that had no powder in them, no pin," Fitzsimmons said. The discovery of the grenades and several vintage weapons led police to believe that the man may be a collector.
Police evacuated the houses on either side of the gunman's home as a precaution, but Fitzsimmons said it did not appear that neighbors were in immediate danger. Police officers closed the block to vehicle and foot traffic and notified nearby schools, including the Hoboken Charter School at 4th and Garden streets, the Brandt Middle School at 9th and Garden streets and Demarest High School, at 4th Street and Bloomfield Avenue, Dawn Zimmer, the city's acting mayor, said Friday.
Neighbors and area merchants said the incident left them rattled.
Marcus Thomas, manager at the Giovanni d'Italia shoe repair shop at 7th and Garden Streets, said the incident was "very, very scary."
"He seemed like a normal character," Thomas said of the suspect. "Never seemed violent or anything. He's well-known throughout the community because it's a tight-knit community."
I am very surprised that the guns didn’t start jumping around shooting people. They are very, very dangerous! People who have them should be arrested! /Hoboken-style sarc
So what? What crime is that???
So what you're sayin Fitz, the guy had paperweights that can be purchased at any military surplus store? I mean, some of the surplus stores that have a sese of humor sell them WITH A PIN and a tag containing the number "1" on them... even a funny placard that says "complaint department; take a number."
Now, Fitz this may take a little bit of brain power for you to grasp... so take a deep breath and repeat after me "shall not be infringed, shall not be infringed." Good; now how'd that feel idiot?
Absolutely absurd! What is the justification for touching this man’s guns?
I would sue the crap out of everybody and his brother. What’s the magic number you can have before you’re a menace to society?
Hell, as a kid in NJ my neighbor had that many guns, but he was rich so he was OK, I guess.
And BTW, there used to be one of those “liberal” constitutional standards that only the immediate room around the arrestee could be searched, but the “get tough on crime” commies/fascists did away with that. ...’sides, we in the rabble can’t afford to sue governments, and “tort reform” is separating the worthy from those of us being disposed of by way of economic cleansing.
There’s nothing conservative about class wars pushed by rich, bipartisan liberals and their sponsored propaganda on TV.
many people forget that in nj and even nyc, many high schools had rifle shooting clubs and guns were actually kept in schools. Can you imagine. That was before the socialist gun grabbers took over the schools.
You can’t walk around on your own property with your own gun? I could understand if he was behaving stupidly. Is it against the law (NJ) to show off your new shotgun to your buddy while standing on the front porch?
What does it matter if he had 100 guns? Since when can the cops enter your house and confiscate your guns because a neighbor told police they saw you with one? This is ridiculous.
Lived in rural CO and had a business where we worked in people’s homes, often while they were out.
New employee (recently moved from NJ, oddly enough) discovered a gun collection (all properly secured), and immediately called the sheriff.
After getting him calmed down, the sheriff calle me and suggested I have a little chat with the new guy about eastern vs. western attitudes towards guns.
BTW, the guy did have a lovely collection. Became a friend of mine later, and if I remember correctly he had upwards of 500.
Now, at least some of the sheriffs in agricultural communities in Colorado are pushing for outlawing any discharges of firearms in any developments (including those with large acreages). Those who moved in from the East over the last 20 years or so do rule over the rest. They also do whatever they can to add regulations against working class trash trying to build houses or anything else on their own properties. And there are no developments without homeowners’ associations.
“Authorities seized more than two dozen firearms from a house on Garden Street on Friday after neighbors spotted a resident brandishing a handgun on his front stoop, authorities said.”
Here in Texas if you are on your front stoop without a gun, people call the police (since you’re obviously some kind of crackpot).
Police...evacuated the houses...not in immediate danger...closed the block to vehicle and foot traffic...notified nearby schools...the incident left them rattled...very, very scary...Dawn, the city's acting mayor.
This is what happens, apparently, when a gun is spotted in New Jersey. Unless it's held by Tony Soprano or a cop. I'm surprised they didn't call SWAT and the hazmat team.
no crime was commited. This poor man should sue the city and the PD for wrongful arrest & slander. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t do any good in NJ.
Oh my! It is nothing for my hubby to step out on the front porch with a rifle, shotgun, handgun...whatever happens to suit his fancy! When did that become against the law?
Otherwise, we would have them descending on Washington D.C. by millions.
The madness must stop NOW. If the FedGov won't go to his aid, then the rest of us may need to step up and do what needs doing.
Seriously...
Neighbors called the cops and they dutifully came out. I told them the story and showed them the wood rod with the scope mounted. They shook their heads and apologised to me and went to talk to the concerned neighbor.
One right wing “crazy” at a time is how they will get our firearms and nobody will make a noise in protest.
Nope. Each and every gun owner will be portrayed as a "crazy", as this man was.
Dare to step outside, holding one of your legally-owned firearms? "OFFICER! OFFICER! That dangerous nutjob across the street is WAVING his gun around and THREATENING everyone!!!"
Boom! You're gone. A few thousand dollars and a few months later, you've finally been declared not guilty of whatever pretense was used to arrest you, you've lost your job and all your guns.
Have a nice day!

And on page 290, left column, you will find this section of 2C:39-6 Exemptions.
e. Nothing in subsections b., c. and d. of N.J.S.2C:39-5 shall be construed to prevent a person keeping or carrying about his place of business, residence, premises or other land owned or possessed by him, any firearm, . . .
(subsections b., c. and d. above relate to Unlawful Possession of Weapons, i.e. handguns, without first having obtained a permit to carry the same; rifles and shotguns, without first having obtained a firearms purchaser identification card; and the catch-all "Other weapons. Any person who knowingly has in his possession any other weapon under circumstances not manifestly appropriate for such lawful uses as it may have is guilty of a crime of the fourth degree."
Maybe the front stoop is not considered his property. And I have not found any definition of “brandishing” at the link in reply #28.
But, I see that poor bozo was in New Jersey, "The Armpit of the Universe"... Beats the heck out of me why people stay in a place that will bust you for having a single hollowpoint bullet... :-(
So, a guy with firearm on his own property is arrested and his other guns confiscated. This is unconstitutional and I hope he sues their butts off. He**, even in CA they won’t arrest you for carrying on your own property, can’t arrest you actually, not legally, and I bet the NJ laws don’t allow it either. Just what law was this guy breaking?
What a bunch of linguini spined over feminized wimps.
"OH no! There's a man in the window holding a gun, I feel weak in the knees. Bring the smelling salts, I'm going to faint.
realizing that your paid public servants are retarded will do that to ya...
I don’t think they can get to us “en masse”. At least 1% of the gun-owners would stand up, and that is a formidable army. We each can only control what our own reaction would be and fix our minds on planning for that day, if it ever comes.
This guy *should* be arrested.
He should be charged with beiing underarmed, underprepared and giving up his weapons without a fight.
WTF "Led police to believe"? What, the guy is deaf, blind and mute so they couldn't just ask him?
Demonstrating once again that no matter how bad you think New Jersey is, it's actually much worse.

bttt
Why does the ignorant and stupid press assume any firearm found is just horrible??
because they are ignorant and stupid.
