Obama to Spend $10.3 TRILLION on Welfare
Heritage Foundation ^ | Sept. 16, '09 | Robert Rector

Posted on 09/19/2009 6:23:24 PM PDT by T.L.Sink

[On Sept. 16th Heritage scholar Robert Rector appeared on the Lou Dobbs Show and outlined the shocking results of his latest research about how Obama is rushing us into the complete welfare state.] Welfare or aid to poor and low-income persons is now the third most expensive government function. Its costs rank above spending on national defense. Welfare spending has grown enormously since Lyndon Johnson launched the War on Poverty. In his first two years in office, Obama will increase annual welfare spending by ONE-THIRD from $522 billion to $697 billion. After adjusting for inflation, this increase is two and a half times greater than ANY previous increase in federal welfare spending IN U.S. HISTORY. While campaigning, Obama lamented that "the war in Iraq is costing each household about $100 per month." Applying the same standard reveals that welfare spending will cost each household $560 per month in 2009 and $638 per month in 2010. Obama's increases in welfare are permanent expansions of the welfare state, NOT temporary increases in response to the current recession.

Most Americans are so bombarded daily now with "billions" and "trillions" that we've become sort of numerically shell-shocked. But we're rapidly going broke and the next couple generations are already in hock. With his plan for socialized medicine and a myriad of other social programs that will permanently 'break the bank,' it appears that Obama has nearly realized his socialist agenda. "Socialism always fails because ultimately it runs out of other people's money." - Margaret Thatcher

We just need to add more zero’s behind the number of printing presses that we run 24 hours a day.

Issue resolved. ; )

I’d sure love to have that $693 per month back to pay for the welfare of my family! I’m so sick of paying for other slackers and ne’er do wells.

Well, no politicians are stopping him on this extravaganza.
Haven’t heard an enormous outcry. This will ruin many large to medium sized cities, as those wanting all these goodies come in. WHY WORK???

The goal of the Democrat Party is to steal money from their hard working political opponents and give it to people who refuse to work. The only function these people need to perform in exchange for this money is to vote for Democrats, preferable more than once per election.

The only people Obama cares about are his billionaire banking buddies on wallstreet who he gave trillions to and the welfare class which he wants to drive us all into. If you make anywhere from 40,000$ to 1,000,000 he wants to punish you and make you pay for the welfare state. He certainly doesn’t care about the majority of people or the middle class.

I don’t think it is really permanent. It will end when the creditors decide to recognize that the government is bankrupt.

Hey Mr. President,

How about changing our income tax laws to encourage personal savings and capital investment staying in the USA? That way, we can bring back the estimated US$14 to US$19 TRILLION in American-owned liquid assets sent out of the country to offshore financial centers using tax loopholes and lost to the cash-only undergound economy, all in the name of tax avoidance. That much liquidity coming back to the American financial system under better tax circumstances would provide a GIGANTIC base of real assets to fuel a new economic boom, one the relies far less on debt financing.

Good point. “overwhelm the government until it collapses” sounds to me like it’s right out of Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals.” And that’s what’s destroying us!

I’m not so optimistic. Our major creditor (China) has already told us that since we can’t even be good capitalists they’re not going to be suckers and keep buying our Treasuries. They don’t intend to go down with a sinking ship! In fact, when Geithner was over there on his knees begging for credit the Chicomms told him that. Get your ship in order soon - or else!

According to President Obama's budget projections, federal and state welfare spending will total $10.3 trillion over the next 10 years (FY 2009 to FY 2018). This spending will equal $250,000 for each person currently living in poverty in the U.S., or $1 million for a poor family of four.

If we just gave the money as simple cash benefits, the "poor" would be instantly "rich". (Even at current spending levels, it would put them well above median income.)

This is unassailable proof that the statists' "war on poverty" is not about ending poverty. They could already do that, easily. It is and always was about growing the State and State power at the expense of the people's liberty.

I think you’re exactly right. It’s a classic example of a huge partisan bureaucracy that has as it’s end not the welfare of individuals, but the belief that the omnipotent Orwellian State should dominate the social and economic order - for those who are incapable of recognizing what’s in their own and society’s best interests. As such, it’s totally at odds with the sense of individual freedom and responsibility that made the nation great. In other words, “we know best, not you.”

The liberals are not only expanding welfare but have it on their agenda to ELIMINATE the welfare reform measures of the Republican Congress in the 90’s.

Since the early sixties we have spent $13 trillion, and poverty has not changed one bit. The myth of poverty solving goes on and on. The money funds the continuance of poverty for sure. What a divestment of, as yet, unearned tax treasure.

“Sixteen tons and what do you get
Ten more trillion dumped on your back
Break more ground, haul it all out
Day and night labors’ what it’s about”

True - the whole problem stems from the fact that liberals a la Obama are only concerned with the REDISTRIBUTION of wealth and never the CREATION of wealth. We’re seeing the results of that policy more and more every day. That brings me to once again reiterating one of my favorite quotes from Margaret Thatcher: “Socialism always fails because ultimately it runs out of other people’s money.”
