Values voters pick Huckabee for 2012 in straw poll
The Washington Times ^ | September 19, 2009 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 09/19/2009 5:23:45 PM PDT by GoldStandard

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Saturday won a 2012 presidential preference straw poll of social and religious conservative activists from 49 states gathered in Washington, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said at an afternoon press briefing at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.

It was sweet revenge for Mr. Huckabee, who narrowly lost a similar poll in 2007 to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Only in-person voting was permitted in this vote -- Mr. Romney had won with combined Internet and in-person voting.

On Saturday Mr. Huckabee took 28.48 percent of the vote, while Mr. Romney was in a four-way tie for second place with Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Indiana Rep. Mike Pence. All four won 12 percent of the vote in rounded numbers.

Mike Huckabee is also doing the best in many of the real 2012 polls too.

I don’t think Hunter would have a very broad appeal. De Mint, on the other hand, might have that appeal; he’s certainly emerging.

I see Hunter the way I see Huckabee, both of them good in their own ways, and possibly excellent Cabinet material. Of course, it’s early times yet, and there will probably be a lot of growth and development among all our possible candidates.

Hunter is not only excellent on every issue, he - unlike Huck, Mitt, etc - has never deviated from his reagan conservatism.

He knows more about geopolitics than then entire field combined. And he is the ONLY one who has been sounding the alarm over China - both militarily and economically - for years.

I trust staunch ant-communists like Hunter. I don’t trust Mao fellaters like Huck and Mitt.

DeMint has much to learn from Hunter on foreign policy.

Agreed. I look back at 2008 and see 3 possible felons on the Dem side and on the GOP side there were some good guys (also gals with Sarah later).

McCain was probably the worst RINO of the bunch. Hunter was probably the best conservative along with Keyes and maybe Tancredo. Fred would have been good too.

Maybe the values voters would be better off concentrating on the 2010 elections and stop these idiotic straw polls for President. Once again, I say NO to anyone who ran in 2008 in the primary. I don’t want to see any of them back on the ballot in 2012.

Huckabee helped McCain lock it down over Romney. If Huck had bowed out - I think Romney would have beaten McCain.

Romney might not have beaten Hussein but he would have at least tried to win.

While Hunter might be great on certain issues, he doesn’t have much of a national profile and is, from what I have seen of him, not a very effective speaker. Like it or not, this is important.

Huckabee is a smooth talking and affable man. Elderly church going folks who normally don’t vote, will come out to vote for Huckabee. Plus with Chuck Norris at his side and Huckabee’s guitar playing ways, the ex-AR Governor does better with the 18-29 year old crowd than other GOP candidates. Huckabee reminds young people of the fun loving youth pastor that had in their youth.

Mike Pence for ‘12 POTUS! And, no matter who the final GOP ‘12 POTUS candidate really is, no RINO’s, ever again! Senator DeMint is still very supportive of Mitt Romney, and this is his major weakness among conservative voters.

So the "values voters" learned nothing from 2008, apparently. If they don't wise up, they'll get the same result in 2012: The GOP nominee will not be to their liking. At all.

They need to choose someone who appeals to all the GOP factions (including theirs, of course.) Huckabee doesn't. At all.

Sorry, but I am convinced that there are many like me.. who voted for SARAH. I’m also convinced that if it was NOT FOR SARAH, Juan McLAME would have had a vote total to compare with MONDALE of ‘84.

If Sarah was not on the ticket, I would have stayed home, as my ONE PARTY STATE the local and state LIBS ran Unopposed.

And there people go AGAIN; ANYONE but Sarah Palin!

Huckabee just won’t cut it! I mean, I respect the man, but he doesn’t have near the star-power that Sarah Palin does! He can’t draw nearly the size of crowds that Sarah can!

I don’t care what the polls say; my friends and I still strongly back Sarah!

NO to Huckabee!

People can’t let their minds be polluted by the feces coming out of the liberals’ mouths about Sarah Palin!

WE WANT SARAH!!!!! I can’t believe it’s not obvious to people now that she is the only one who can beat Obama.

We need two strong people who actually have balls and will buck the liberals’ off of the back of our government:

SARAH PALIN & MICHELE BACHMANN, 2012!!!!!!

Mike Huckabee stepped into the 2008 campaign and was one of the reasons why McCain won.

The only reason why these “Value Voters” could possibly support a liberal fake like Huckabee is because the damned REpublican party has stopped talking about values. Steele has indicated that he doesn’t give a damn about values.

But we can certainly do better than Huckabee, who is basically a snake oil salesman, as he proved while governor of Arkansas. He is corrupt, he is liberal, and his only shtick is that he can stand up there and sound like an old fashioned revivalist preacher.

But he ain’t.

If we want values, how about Sarah Palin? She is a REAL Christian. She’s an Evangelical, not a Catholic. But as a Catholic, I would not hestitate to support her, because she really means and believes it.

Folks need to check out Huck’s record as the governor of Arkansas. They might as well have had a democrat in the governor’s mansion.

Palin didn’t make it because she stayed home to welcome son Track back from Iraq. Once again, the other pols talk values, she lives them.

These straw polls infuriate me to no end right now as it seems such a waste of time and that time would be better spent getting good conservative candidates on board to run in 2010.

Don’t know anyone personally that wants anyone to run in 2012 who ran in the 2008 primaries.

“America had their say on Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, etc. Please someone fresh in 2012.”

Just because someone run and lost doesn’t mean the are finished forever or they don’t still have something offer. I seem to recall a certain person that lost in the GOP primaries in 1976 and came back in 1980 and was elected President.

With that said, I’m not trying to compare any of the above to Reagan. I don’t have a candidate for 2012. Its way too early. Stopping socialized medicine and the 2010 elections are the focus at the moment. I just wanted to make the point that just because someone has run before and lost doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have another chance.
