First They Came for the Marlboros - The hazards of Michael Bloomberg's paternalist utopia.
Slate ^ | Sept. 19, 2009 | Jacob Weisberg

Posted on 09/19/2009 10:40:12 AM PDT by neverdem

Last Monday dawned clear and bright in the nanny state of New York City. The newspaper brought word that the city's new health commissioner was working on ways to get residents to exercise more. That same morning, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced his latest assault on unhealthy behavior. By 2012, the mayor hopes "to lower the proportion of adults who drink one or more sugar-sweetened beverages each day by 20 percent." Tuesday's news was about plans to forbid smoking at public parks and beaches.

If the past pattern holds, initial gasps of outrage at such bureaucratic interference will sputter into acceptance. When Bloomberg extinguished smoking in restaurants, bars, and workplaces in 2002, the New York Post denounced him as the "Mommy Mayor" and his approval rating plummeted. Christopher Hitchens called him a "picknose control freak." Since then, the smoking ban has spread to Dublin pubs and Paris cafes and the muttering has gone away. Last week, the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, shared a stage with Bloomberg at Columbia University and mocked him for banning margarine—i.e., trans fat, which eateries in the five boroughs can no longer use. But restaurants adapted to that rule without much fuss, as they did to the city ordinance requiring them to post calorie counts on their menus. Most people prefer living in a healthier town.

The uptick in paternalism is not merely a New York phenomenon. As my colleague Will Saletan notes, outdoor smoking bans have been imposed around the country. President Obama, who struggles with a cigarette addiction himself, approves this role for the federal government. He recently named Thomas Frieden, the man behind New York's smoking and eating directives, to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention...

“Liberals should show restraint, lest the right to be stupid go up in smoke.”

As long as there are liberals, the right to be stupid CAN’T “go up in smoke”.

Managina a city, controlling crime, balancing a budget, cutting spending and personnel

These are all too tough decisions for today’s politicians. They need to spend their time on what people eat and drink.

Oh yeah, and their sexual orientation.

How much sugar is in cheesecake, ice cream, and cup cakes? Let’s ban those too. It should help out the ladies.

I wonder when they’ll place regulations on food stamp recipients? Only allowing them to buy limited amounts of soda, etc. Once that’s done they only need to focus on forcing everyone on food stamps in order to control everything we eat and drink.

"I simply turn on the Golden EIB Microphone and share my honest passions and beliefs with people.
And they're free to go elsewhere.
They're free to ignore; they're free to believe; they're free to be entertained, I don't care.
They're free to do whatever they want.
But a lot of people aren't free to smoke cigarettes where they want;
they're not free to drink where they want;
they're not free to eat the kind of food they want to eat;
they're not free to eat trans fats;
they're not free to drive certain places.
Pretty soon we're going to be told what kind of cars we have to drive.
I can't cause that.
I can't restrict anybody's freedom.
We've elected a guy who can, does, and wants to, all under the guise of saving us.
So I appreciate the effort, and I appreciate somewhat losing my temper here.
But don't compare me ever to an authoritarian who thinks so little of people that without him they can barely breathe on their own.
Don't ever do that."

Bloomberg: a combination of the worst impulses of the left in state control and oppression combined with the worst impulses of the conservative desire for enforcing a moral and healthy independent culture... They call this animal “moderate.”

Pray for Bloomboob's defeat!

Since Bloomberg has managed to be the Republican candidate (thanks to the impotence of the NYC Republican "leaders" who wouldn't run a real GOP primary candidate against him), the only candidate with any realistic chance of beating him is the Democrat. On the nanny state initiatives, there isn't a dime's worth of difference between the two of them. So even in the unlikely event that "Bloomboob" loses his bid for re-election, there won't be any huge change in policy.

There is a Libertarian Party candidate who is very outspoken in opposing both on these issues, but, due to a lack of funding and publicity, very few NYC residents could even identify the Libertarian candidate's name.

Did I miss something? Did the Bloominidiot switch back to being a “republican” after he switched to independent after he was a republican when he switched from a demonrat?

Did the Bloominidiot switch back to being a "Republican"...?

To the best of my knowledge, no, he is still registered officially as an independent. His designation as GOP candidate was from endorsement by the five GOP county leaders in NYC. That allows him to be a candidate in the GOP primary. Any other Republican who would have wanted to challenge him in the GOP primary would have to gather enough names on petitions to qualify. No one else did, knowing that the odds of beating his megabucks would be minuscule indeed. So there was no contested primary, and Bloomberg is now the candidate on the Republican line (as well as an independent line, for which he gathered petitions) in the general election.

Incidentally, in his first two terms of office after being elected at least in part on the Republican line, Bloomy, word has it, has yet to appoint a recognizable Republican to any major position in his city administration! So the party "bosses" continue to run him on "their" line and yet get little or nothing in return. Not very fair, but the thinking is that there is no practical alternative.

No, Bloomberg is essentially a big government, tax and spend 'Rat philosophically. On foreign afairs, though, he seems to be conscious of national security . So you might call him an old line Democrat in the Harry Truman-Scoop Jackson mold, even though officially he's an "independent." (But his foreign policy hardly means anything as a big city mayor.)

Don't forget where Bloomberg comes from: the MSM! I'm a firm believer in the theory that the "news" product of an MSM outlet reflects the thinking and ideology of the ownership. So by watching Bloomberg television, you can get a pretty good idea where he stands.

"Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."
