Resurgent Connecticut GOP Brings Five Challengers To Dodd

The Yankee Republican became an endangered species in Washington, D.C., last fall with the defeat of U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, the lone survivor of the breed in Connecticut's congressional delegation.

Although the state still had a popular Republican governor, the party's national aspirations seemed to have taken flight for more hospitable territory.

A scant 10 months later, the GOP in Connecticut is back with what promises to be a raucous and costly fight to unseat a politically vulnerable U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd. The party, which hasn't mounted a credible challenge to the Democratic incumbent in years, now has a field of five candidates vying for the chance to knock him off.

"We're trying to get our mojo back at the federal level, across New England and across the country," said Heath Fahle, chairman of the Manchester Republican Town Committee, who supports former U.S. Rep. "It's important we have a robust discussion about who we are as a party."

Each of the five represents a different facet of Republican philosophy.

There's state Sen. Sam Caligiuri, a 43-year-old social conservative from Waterbury who is highlighting his youth and outside-the-Beltway perspective; former Ambassador to Ireland Tom Foley, a successful Greenwich businessman who raised money for President George W. Bush and has an MBA from Harvard; former wrestling executive and one-time occasional performer Linda McMahon, who touts her business acumen and outsider status; financial pundit Peter Schiff, who predicted the recession and is the darling of libertarians nationwide; and Simmons, the fiscally pragmatic, socially moderate New England Republican whose candidacy has already won the support of some of the state's GOP establishment.

I am not happy about this. This means they will present Dodd with all kinds of ammunition against each other.

Dodd has to go but the idea of Linda McMahon as a Senator will not fly. (Think Jesse Ventura)

Simmons is another pol and has the support of the blueblood GOP in CT.

I kind of like Schiff.

I’ve already contributed to Schiff. And Rand Paul. And I’ve sent my quarterly check to the Club for Growth. And I’ve used the latest mailing from the RNC for birdcage liner...

It was either litterman or leno who said last night(I believe) that the way to loose money fast in Connecticut was to give to the Dodd campagin.

McMahon donated to the Democratic National Committee as recently as last year. An unbelievable RINO

McMahan would be the first US Senator to have been previously tombstoned by Cane on the entrance ramp.

I kind of like Schiff.

I kind of do too. After all, “its the economy stupid”. Which reminds me, if you could get Bill Clinton to change parties...oh never mind.

Well, I guess we just better surrender to the RATS, then.

After all, you folks just can't seem to be satisfied with half a loaf, like the RATS have been as they incrementally took over the country.

At least you can go down with your "conservative principles" intact. It won't mean squat, but that is how the RATS have successfully manipulated you for the past thirty years.

The first thing that crossed my mind was how many of these guys running against a dirtbag are liberal dirtbags with a little “r” behind their name. But I know a whole bunch of people will be giddy ... “We have a republican running ...wooohooo ..” It is how we got where we are.

My friend,
A p*ss poor Republican is still better than any RAT, but it doesn’t change the fact of the quality of the candidates.

Don’t count Dodd as out. He has a lot of friends in high places, and a lot of money.

I just mainly want to know who is running against Pelosi? I want them all gone but her in particular.

One sees the words “socially conservative” & “socially moderate” in describing these Pubbies. Quite frankly not much to get enthused about. Larry Kudlow was weighing getting into the race but decided against it. Don’t count Dodd out, he wields a lot of power.

Exactly. Apparently anything less than 100% perfection is not good enough for some of these people.

I think Schiff and Simmons are outstanding candidate.
