Big Cities Bear Brunt of Cuts
WSJ ^ | 9/18/09 | LESLIE EATON

Four city health clinics in this fast-growing city are on the chopping block. So are some street-maintenance efforts, printed pay stubs and as many as 840 city paychecks -- including two for the guys who muck out mounted-police horse stalls.

This North Texas city is struggling to close a $190 million gap in its $2.7 billion budget, joining major metropolises across the country that are reeling from the recession's impact on their tax revenue after years of expanding spending.

OBAMAVILLE Gett’n a head fake, watchin’ msn’s take; All of their pundits oozing foul oil. Clean’n my six gun on my front porch swing. Felling my blood— It’s beginnin’ to boil.

Wasted away again in Obamaville, Searchin’ for a job so I can earn my salt. Some people claim that Bush is to blame, But I know it’s Obama’s fault.

There’s no rhyme or reason, They are all commitin’ treason With nothing to show but a brand new tax or two. But they are real beauties, Despotic duties, how they got passed I haven’t a clue.

Wasted away again in Obamaville, Searchin’ for a job so I can earn my salt. Some people claim that it’s Bush we should blame, Now I think,— hell with them it’s Obama’s fault.

I blew out my flip flop, Stepped on a pop top; Cut my heel, but I just cruise on back home. Because no medical care will the doctors render They say there’s little service I can tender And there’s no need for me to hang on.

Wasted away again in Obamaville Searchin’ for a job so I can earn my salt. Some people claim that Bush is to blame, But I know, it’s my own damn fault. Yes, and some people claim that Bush is to blame, And I know because of my vote it’s my own damn fault.

10% short of a balanced budget? No problem. Here's the tried and true solution:

  1. Close the libraries on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
  2. Fire some policemen
  3. Fire some firemen
  4. Fire some teachers
  5. Close some city and county parks

That should do it. Report back to me next week.

By the way, to whom should I send my consulting invoice?

When did Dallas become a “fast growing city”?

The health clinics are pointless because the county has some too.

I am not sure the City of Dallas has been growing lately.

Dallas is now landlocked by all of the developed cities and counties around it. About the only way they can grow, is to bulldoze the south side, which needs it anyway.

I don't know how long it will take, but eventually gentrification is going to set in there. There's literally nowhere else to go.

My condolences. I used to live there too.

No, Arnold is still wrangling with the feds about it. It's not a done deal yet.

nobody drives newer cars, or sits in nicer office buildings than city employees. They are lords and ladies, the surfs exist to serve the city.

public sector needs an enema, if Jack Nicholas were playing Ronald Reagan

My brother moved for a very short town into a small Dallas house. It had no foundation, it sat on stumps. The tub drained underneath the house. There was mold all in the attic and it had enough holes to see daylight in there.

It was very weird. Glad he moved.

Yeah, like a lot of cities that are over 100 years old, Dallas has a lot of ramshackle properties. Houses just don’t last forever.

I’ve seen whole neighborhoods in south Dallas that are just too old and dilapidated to save. Nothing, including the basic infrastructure is worth saving in some of those areas.

A lot of acreage down there needs to be bulldozed right down to the dirt, and put to good use.

It’ll be tough to do, though, for political reasons. “Women, children, and minorities hardest hit.”

City governments have also expanded during the past 15 years. While local-government payrolls, excluding teachers, have been flat for the past 12 months, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics figures, the number of employees soared by more than 743,000 to 6.49 million over the past decade, an increase of nearly 13%.

Cities adding highly paid union employees all campaigning for Obama rather than working. Not hard to spot the problem.

It wasn’t old. It was shoddy. It was built in the backyard of another house. The whole ‘hood was like that.

I've got no answer in that case. Don't know if those huts were built illegally, but it sure sounds like it, per your description.

Still sounds like an older, more run down section of Dallas.

Someone told me about a house like that in Richmond, California (East San Francisco Bay suburb). The house has no foundation. I believe it also has no electricity and is heated by a wood stove. There are leaks in the roof. I understand it is near a freeway. It must have been built a long time ago. People still live in it. I'd like to have a look at it but I don't know the exact address.

But this one in Dallas isn’t very old. It was thrown up fast apparently.

google map 2210 Hondo Ave (or was it 2209 and a half?)

This house was built behind that house. A lot of backyards in the area have shoddy houses there. Heavily hispanic. All rent houses I think. Rent gets paid at a landro-mat.

There’s a small suburb not far from where I live, with bungalow houses built in the early 20th century. The backyards are very “deep” and the largest lot on the street is a quarter acre. Many of these yards contained outbuildings, which may have included tool sheds, rabbit hutches, and chicken coops. The situation you are describing sounds almost like someone decided to rent out a chicken coop.

Its not a coop. They literally built a bunch of shoddy houses in peoples backyards, meaning no yard for the other house. The rent was $300 to $400....

this was earlier this year by the way

The best way to balance the budget is to insure that only 5 workers stand around watching 1 worker actually do something instead of 10.

If you right click on “Link” in the upper right of the google map page, then copy link, and then paste it in your post, like I did above, it should work. I just picked a random location in Dallas.

Or I could have just written the address as 2208 Hondo, Dallas TX

Then you’ll go to street view and turn the view around to see the ugly houses with houses right behind them. By the way sometimes the people in the front house blocked the driveway, when they weren’t in Mexico, and we had to drive through the alley behind the back house.

not good on tires and the limbs scratching the paint
