What I wrote last year about candidate Barack Obama -- that to win he had to be seen as "the least-aggrieved black man in America" -- may be even more relevant now. To lead this diverse and fractious nation effectively, the president has to negotiate racial issues with delicacy, caution and tact. He has to give even his most vocal critics the benefit of the doubt.
But I don't. So I can say in plain language that Jimmy Carter was right in essence, but wrong in degree. It seems clear to me that some -- but not "an overwhelming portion," as Carter claimed -- of the "intensely demonstrated animosity" toward Obama is indeed "based on the fact that he is a black man."
Obama disagrees. "The president does not believe that criticism comes based on the color of his skin,"
SNIP
Of course it's possible to reject Obama's policies and philosophy without being racist. But there's a particularly nasty edge to the most vitriolic attacks -- a rejection not of Obama's programs but of his legitimacy as president. This denial of legitimacy is more pernicious than the abuse heaped upon George W. Bush by his critics (including me), and I can't find any explanation for it other than race.

And WaPo wonders why their circulation continues to circle the bowl like the turd it is.
Who's saying that he is not a legitimate President because he is "black"?? I would supposed that only real racists would be saying that - right??
Yeah Eugene, you leftist tool, he really handled that Gates arrest with caution, delicacy and tact! You are a moron! So is Obama!
We tire of your race-baiting Eugene. Why don’t you, Jimmy, Barack and the rest of that crew go live in Cuba, where equality reigns.
Tell you what Race baiters. Give us three examples of racism at the 09-12 March. Don't just scream the accusation like this. Actually provide documented PROOF to back up the accusation.
The accuser has to prove their accusations, they don't get to simply scream the lie and demand everyone else prove them wrong.
So where the proof to back up this accusation WP?
To characterize criticism of Obama’s policies as racist is a rather vile, evil and insidious manifestation of racism. It makes race more important than the debate over the merits of policy, it assumes that the President is inferior to any of his prececessors, and it assumes that criticism is insincere based solely on the color of the critic’s skin.
We are against the color of his IDEALS, which are both RED and GREEN, with GREEN being the new RED.
They’re right about one thing: Carter has always been a drama queen, using phrases like “an overwhelming portion” when the truth is about 5 percent. He did this constantly as president.
Gee, maybe the fact that Obama has never presented, to the public, a notarized, official copy of his birth certificate just MIGHT have something to do with it?
And I'm not even a birther...
The favor that Jimmy Carter does for all of us, and he does this incessantly, is showing the way to go in life.
Yup.
Whatever Mr. Carter says or urges, just do the opposite, and you’ll be a happy and successful person.
Mr. Carter is humorless lout, who couldn’t fall out of a boat and find water. Good Lord, the man is such a meathead.
I suspect another BIG CON here.
In which Marxist Obama claims to be above this, whilst clandestinely directing his peeps (e.g. James Earl Carter) to claim "racism".
No proof, but it's ... so "them".
.
Obama is half white, imagine that...this is what the left have been trying to avoid; reality.
Now, by selling him as Black, anything that disagrees with him is racist.
Eugene Robinson, has established himself as a useful idiot and member of the Clown Universe.
Before he was elected to Congress, Wilson was one of a handful of South Carolina state senators to vote to keep the Confederate flag flying above the State House in Columbia. This was after a long, bitter battle over the flag had distilled the issue, at least in the minds of most South Carolinians, into a proxy fight over race: Was the state going to move forward, or would it cling to its shameful past? Most politicians in the state, including most conservatives, had decided it was time to move on. Wilson was one of the last diehards.
That, of course, was his right. But now that he has committed a singular act of disrespect toward the first African American president, it's my right to ask whether his motivation was racial.
I look forward to the day when we can look past race. But before we can do so, we need to look at race and see it clearly. Jimmy Carter did us a favor.
I remember the article he is referring to. My response is the same now as it was then; the race card doesn’t work with and if you use it, you suck..
I look amusingly at the birthers vs the truthers (right vs left) as proof to support my life long motto:
Don’t spit in the well, you might have to drink the water!
My other prominent motto:
Success is the best revenge!
After listening to just snippets of Reverend Wright’s sermons why would anyone think that this president would be able to negotiate racial issues with delicacy, caution and tact? The man that wrote this non-sense is a loon. The ability to divorce what we actually know of the kenyan from what we are expected to believe about the kenyan is remarkable. I believe there is some sort of pychiatric term for this. Just unbelieveable.
keep it up jimmuh, every time this idiot opens his mouth, he reminds people how out of touch he is with reality.
Obammie is probably asking someone to find jimmy a piece of wood and a hammer to play with to get him of the stage.
Carter gave us something no other president ever could, Ronald Reagan!
Brother that is some tortured spin.
Robinson, no stranger to race-baiting himself, is offering us an extension of the old fade-back position when a liberal accusation turns out to be a lie - a lie is good because it brings up the conversation. Sorry, bud, “consciousness-raising” went out in the 70’s and that’s no more than a cheap alibi.
Of course not because Mr. Robinson's only lense is racial, he sees everything in terms of race. For those who don't know, Mr Robinson is a major advocate of reparations.
And didn’t the liberals say that George W. Bush wasn’t really a legitimate president, because of the fallout from the 2000 election?
Okay, Gene. And your point?
I’ve seen very little of this president’s benefit of the doubt. And he handles racial issues with all the delicacy, caution and tact of Edward Scissorhands attempting to pleasure himself.
I am upset that he is the WRONG black man - the first black president should have been Thomas Sowell.
...and then there is this...
"Are some voters not going to vote for me because I'm African-American? Those are the same voters who probably wouldn't vote for me because of my politics," BHO NH 12/10/06
WTF is he even talking about?
The CENTRAL theme of the Bush criticism was based on a denial of his legitimacy.
They claimed he stole the first election. They claimed he stole the second election. They claimed he was installed because of his family connections. They claimed he wasn't even running the show, but was a puppet to Cheney's machinations. They claimed he was too stupid to even understand what was going on around him.
It was all about a denial of legitimacy. Now, suddenly this douchebag thinks that such denials must be race based?!?
‘The favor Jimmy Carter did us all’ was to show us that America can survive four years without a president.
Well, stay tuned. I don’t know who it will be - but I think we can all see something coming from 4 years of Obama-quality leadership (sic). And that would properly be labeled a “snap back effect”. Let’s have someone worthy, ready.

Anyone who cares about their country would be very concerned that a POTUS had hidden every scrap of information of his life that he possibly could.
I question Obama's eligibility not based on his race (50% white, 44% Arab, 6% black), but on his willful withholding of supporting documentation, and numerous admissions in his own autobiographies.

Yep. Test #2 in progress.
Far better to just shrug and say "Yeah, whatever. So many honest differences of opinion have been called 'racist' that I don't pay any attention to that epithet any more."
These cries of racism are a liberal defense mechanism. They fear that President Obama is failing and if he fails it would confirm racist views of black inferiority. Reacting out of their emotional fear they lash out and attack.
Is there some kind of racism Geiger Counter?
Excellent point. You are absolutely correct. Yours is better, stronger, response to this garbage.

Cheers!
