The Favor Jimmy Carter Did Us All
Washington Post ^ | Friday, September 18, 2009 | Eugene Robinson

Posted on 09/18/2009 11:39:17 AM PDT by nickcarraway

What I wrote last year about candidate Barack Obama -- that to win he had to be seen as "the least-aggrieved black man in America" -- may be even more relevant now. To lead this diverse and fractious nation effectively, the president has to negotiate racial issues with delicacy, caution and tact. He has to give even his most vocal critics the benefit of the doubt.

But I don't. So I can say in plain language that Jimmy Carter was right in essence, but wrong in degree. It seems clear to me that some -- but not "an overwhelming portion," as Carter claimed -- of the "intensely demonstrated animosity" toward Obama is indeed "based on the fact that he is a black man."

Obama disagrees. "The president does not believe that criticism comes based on the color of his skin,"

SNIP

Of course it's possible to reject Obama's policies and philosophy without being racist. But there's a particularly nasty edge to the most vitriolic attacks -- a rejection not of Obama's programs but of his legitimacy as president. This denial of legitimacy is more pernicious than the abuse heaped upon George W. Bush by his critics (including me), and I can't find any explanation for it other than race.

Who's saying that he is not a legitimate President because he is "black"?? I would supposed that only real racists would be saying that - right??

No Sir, it is an utter out right total lie.

Tell you what Race baiters. Give us three examples of racism at the 09-12 March. Don't just scream the accusation like this. Actually provide documented PROOF to back up the accusation.

The accuser has to prove their accusations, they don't get to simply scream the lie and demand everyone else prove them wrong.

So where the proof to back up this accusation WP?

To characterize criticism of Obama’s policies as racist is a rather vile, evil and insidious manifestation of racism. It makes race more important than the debate over the merits of policy, it assumes that the President is inferior to any of his prececessors, and it assumes that criticism is insincere based solely on the color of the critic’s skin.

Well Gene, I agree with your headline but I don't exactly appreciate your logic. I think that Carter did us (as in all Americans) a favor by associating the reputation and memory of his disastrous administration with that of Barack Obama. Having Jimmy come out of the woodwork is not favorable for Obama.

They’re right about one thing: Carter has always been a drama queen, using phrases like “an overwhelming portion” when the truth is about 5 percent. He did this constantly as president.

Gee, maybe the fact that Obama has never presented, to the public, a notarized, official copy of his birth certificate just MIGHT have something to do with it?

And I'm not even a birther...

The favor that Jimmy Carter does for all of us, and he does this incessantly, is showing the way to go in life.

Yup.

Whatever Mr. Carter says or urges, just do the opposite, and you’ll be a happy and successful person.

Mr. Carter is humorless lout, who couldn’t fall out of a boat and find water. Good Lord, the man is such a meathead.

I suspect another BIG CON here.

In which Marxist Obama claims to be above this, whilst clandestinely directing his peeps (e.g. James Earl Carter) to claim "racism".

No proof, but it's ... so "them".

Now, by selling him as Black, anything that disagrees with him is “racist.”

Here's how this high-minded article ends:

Before he was elected to Congress, Wilson was one of a handful of South Carolina state senators to vote to keep the Confederate flag flying above the State House in Columbia. This was after a long, bitter battle over the flag had distilled the issue, at least in the minds of most South Carolinians, into a proxy fight over race: Was the state going to move forward, or would it cling to its shameful past? Most politicians in the state, including most conservatives, had decided it was time to move on. Wilson was one of the last diehards.

That, of course, was his right. But now that he has committed a singular act of disrespect toward the first African American president, it's my right to ask whether his motivation was racial.

I look forward to the day when we can look past race. But before we can do so, we need to look at race and see it clearly. Jimmy Carter did us a favor.

After listening to just snippets of Reverend Wright’s sermons why would anyone think that this president would be able to negotiate racial issues with delicacy, caution and tact? The man that wrote this non-sense is a loon. The ability to divorce what we actually know of the kenyan from what we are expected to believe about the kenyan is remarkable. I believe there is some sort of pychiatric term for this. Just unbelieveable.

Robinson, no stranger to race-baiting himself, is offering us an extension of the old fade-back position when a liberal accusation turns out to be a lie - a lie is good because it brings up the conversation. Sorry, bud, “consciousness-raising” went out in the 70’s and that’s no more than a cheap alibi.

Okay, Gene. And your point?

I’ve seen very little of this president’s benefit of the doubt. And he handles racial issues with all the delicacy, caution and tact of Edward Scissorhands attempting to pleasure himself.

WTF is he even talking about?

The CENTRAL theme of the Bush criticism was based on a denial of his legitimacy.

They claimed he stole the first election. They claimed he stole the second election. They claimed he was installed because of his family connections. They claimed he wasn't even running the show, but was a puppet to Cheney's machinations. They claimed he was too stupid to even understand what was going on around him.

It was all about a denial of legitimacy. Now, suddenly this douchebag thinks that such denials must be race based?!?

Concerns about his legitimacy to hold the office isn't based on skin color either.

0bamas’ hidden records: Why are these off limits?

1 Certified copy of original birth certificate
2 Columbia University transcripts
3 Columbia thesis paper
4 Campaign donor analysis requested by 7 major watchdog groups
5 Harvard University transcripts
6 Illinois State Senate records
7 Illinois State Senate schedule
8 Law practice client list and billing records/summary
9 Locations and names of all half-siblings and step-mother
10 Medical records (only the one page summary released so far)
11 Occidental College Transcripts
12 Parent’s marriage Certificate
13 Record of baptism
14 Selective Service registration records
15 Schedules for trips outside of the United States before 2007
16 Passport records for all passports
17 Scholarly articles
18 SAT and LSAT test scores
19 Access to his grandmother in Kenya
20 List of all campaign workers that are lobbyists
21 Punahou grade school records
22 Noelani Kindergarten records are oddly missing from the the State of Hawaii Department of Education.

Anyone who cares about their country would be very concerned that a POTUS had hidden every scrap of information of his life that he possibly could.

Excellent, we "Birthers" are really causing severe sub-dermal irritation to the collaborator press.

I question Obama's eligibility not based on his race (50% white, 44% Arab, 6% black), but on his willful withholding of supporting documentation, and numerous admissions in his own autobiographies.

Johnnie, your heart's in the right place, but I think the last thing we want to do is ask for "proof" of racism, it puts us on the defensive every time.

Far better to just shrug and say "Yeah, whatever. So many honest differences of opinion have been called 'racist' that I don't pay any attention to that epithet any more."

These cries of racism are a liberal defense mechanism. They fear that President Obama is failing and if he fails it would confirm racist views of black inferiority. Reacting out of their emotional fear they lash out and attack.
