Underage Prostitution, Gotcha Journalism, and the Ethics of the Acorn Sting
Harper's Magazine ^ | 9/18/09 | Ken Silverstein

Posted on 09/18/2009 11:32:33 AM PDT by nickcarraway

I’ve always admired the work of ACORN and thought right-wing attacks on the group bordered on the hysterical, but that was a terrific undercover sting mounted by the two young conservatives. Sorry, but it’s a serious matter when at least three different ACORN offices, in Washington, Baltimore, and New York, offer to help a 25-year-old “pimp” wearing a derby hat and chinchilla shoulder throw and his “prostitute” lie about their business in order to buy a home. And even more so when the preposterously dressed duo suggested that they’d be bringing in underage girls from Central America to work at their brothel.

ACORN has said that its offices in four cities declined to take the bait. Terrific, that means that only three out of seven ACORN offices were willing to commit fraud to help people set up a brothel.

Liberals have been attacking the videos by saying that the two videomakers, James O’Keefe III and Hannah Giles, are right-wing advocates. Who cares? O’Keefe and Giles got some important things wrong, like the amount of federal money received by ACORN, but there’s no denying the central claims and power of their work. Nor does it matter that the case is now being picked up and exploited by Fox News, Glenn Beck, and Sean Hannity, which in no way undermines the journalists’ work.

Elsewhere you hear that this is only the kind of work trained professionals in the mainstream media should do. Except of course no one in the mainstream media would have done the story. The most idiotic defense came from Robert Borosage, co-director of the liberal Campaign for America’s Future, as reported in the New York Times. Borosage, said the newspaper, described the tactics used against Acorn as “McCarthyite,” adding, “This is dangerous stuff. I don’t think progressives will sit back and let this gain momentum.”

So it seems that progressives will sit back and politely watch Obama gut his own health care reform bill, and also sit back and say very little about him inheriting the Bush strategy in Afghanistan and Iraq. However, they have to draw a line in the sand somewhere and here it is: If you want to open up a whorehouse for underage immigrant girls, we will oppose anyone trying to stop ACORN from helping you out.

Ha! Even when they start to understand, they’ve still got to do the name calling thing. Too funny. They just can’t help themselves. ... (seems like a lot of them are stuck in the 5th grade ‘ugly talk’ mentality)

I can only hope that more than a few of his liberal readers can understand that, yes, what these young journalists did IS, indeed, relevant! Every single lib whose eyes are opened, is a good thing.

Borosage, said the newspaper, described the tactics used against Acorn as “McCarthyite,”

Refresh my memory -- what did Borosage have to say about the Food Lion "sting", where the reporter got a job undercover to prove FL was relabeling and selling meat past its sell-by day. Unfortunately, FL wasn't doing that, so the reporter had to do it himself to get the story. I forget which network it was.

And did he condemn the ginned-up "exploding gas tank" story?

People don't seem to be getting the message.

A liberal who actually thought that his buddies disapproved of such things as smuggling children to be used as sex toys for profit.

Now he knows different and is upset. A possible convert, even. A liberal mugged by reality....

But now he's getting the drift. The truth about his "friends" is that they not only don't care about this, they actually approve of it.

Even Harpers has to admit that ACORN is a criminal enterprise, no matter how much the author ‘admired their work’.

The mafia is notoriously famous for helping out the average neighbor too. It’s a device they use to win popular support for their criminal enterprise. “I got free bread from Al Capone, so he can’t be all bad.”

Sorry, I can't answer that. I've only followed the “breaking news” regarding ACORN peripherally, since I've been aware of this type of conduct for oh, say, 22 years, at least. I'm always amused when the rest of American wakes with a start like Paul Ford's character in “The Russians are Coming”.

Then, everybody runs around with a kitchen pot on their heads, screaming outrage and bloody murder. To me, this whole thing has been the equivalent of “Japs Hit Pearl!”

Wish I could find the link, but its been done... at least in Canada. A young American guy went to Canada and had 2 of his Canadian friends help him.

They went to the "Emergency" room with a hidden camera. They had to take a number and told the wait was 2-10 hours for a possible broken wrist. They waited 3 1/2 and left.

The next day they went to a clinic and one guy asked for some blood tests (a process that has a 15 min wait here) for cholesteral. He was told he needed a referal from his family doctor. He replied he wasn't married and didn't have kids, so no family doctor. They told him he could call the number again to be assigned a family doctor, but would be considered low priority. However, if he did get a family doctor and the referal he could possibly get an appointment.... total wait (inculding the assignment of a family dr) 1 year to 1 1/2 years.

Or, if he had MONEY (for "free" health care) one of the doctors who wasn't in at the time, might see him. The only other option was a private clinic an hour drive away.... cost = $900 CAN

no such thing as “under age prostitution” or “under aged whore”. A 13 year old girl is not an adult and has not made an informed decision. If a 13 year old girl is being sold for sex, it is sexual slavery and the people involved are trafficers in human flesh or slavers.

ACORN should be RICO’d top to bottom with their shell companies - it is nothing but organized crime - willing to support slavers without blinking an eye means they have done it many times before. Penalty should be a quick trial followed by hanging or a bullet. I mean the leaders of this crime family and everyone on down.

I'm sorry it has come as such a shock to our friends abroad, but it is surely understandable. What makes me laugh (or would if it weren't so shameful) is that most of America is just finding out as well.

No one over the pond seems to realize how big America is. No one there seems to be able to recognize that most Americans have so little to do with each other (with the possible exception of work, school and church activities) they don't have a clue of what is going on in the deteriorating parts of the cities and large coastal communities. That includes people of all races. Racism in America isn't what is portrayed by the narrow venue of the major news networks. We all live in multiracial neighborhoods of like individuals who work, mow their lawns, wash their cars, grocery shop and attend church and school functions with absolutely no idea of what is going on in high crime, poor neighborhoods.

If my family had not raised me to be aware, take an interest, and watch (like the proverbial fly on the wall), I wouldn't have known either. We used to hear stories of crime and all shake our heads because it was far removed from our lovely suburban lives. So long as we could come home on the weekends, throw a steak on the barbecue pit and have quality time with friends, life was good. A lot of people never thought beyond it — except at Christmas and Thanksgiving when we were raised to send gifts and food to the poor.

All the while, underneath the rocks and in the darkness, this horrible sedition was brewing and festering. Hatred was being taught in churches, the government in an attempt to stave off the boil-over, threw tons of money at minority businesses, education and charitable non-for-profits. The result was people who had no principles were given an education, were given loans, were given tasks that were so far removed from anything they had ever known. However well intentioned individuals might be, the overwhelming ignorance and lack of character was undermined by the hatred being sewn out of sight.

Most suburban dwellers thought that inner city folks were hearing the same gospels of love and peace and the grace of God. Some of us who actually WENT to the inner city, found something entirely different. Some of us who dealt with ACORN, Section 8 housing, Medicaid found a world that was so at odds with what SHOULD have been happening, we almost died of a broken heart.

This so-called help was being administered by either some of the most ignorant people you can imagine, or the most corrupt. I leave it to the individual encounter to make up a mind which it is — I found it to be both.

This isn't anything new, it's that money is tight, the country is hurting and every dime counts now. I hate to say it, but it went on so long because times were good and, dare I say it, if it kept the poor beggars quiet, it was worth every penny to most in the suburbs. Unfortunately, those of us who truly saw it for what it was just had to walk away because there were so few of us AND BELIEVE ME, we'd have been tagged as the racists to end all racists and vilified and pilloried.

“Europe and Central America are going nuts over this. Europe more so single O abandoned them to Russia.

This isn't even the beginning.”

If things progress as they should, about half way through life, you realize that if you want something done right, you need to do it yourself. If you want missile defense, then it's about time you started developing your own.

But, don't lay this all at the President's door. My personal opinion of him is that he is a charming, delightful man who would make the most interesting dinner companion, but who hasn't put forward one single idea of his own — couldn't, if he tried.

President Obama is the Salesman in Chief for a corrupt, cynical Congress (now controlled largely by far left-wing individuals who believe snails have more rights than humans). Is it any wonder that the lives of humans (wherever they might be) are of no value to people so demented and bereft of principle that they believe it would be the quickest form of population control and urban renewal. They actually believe they will be better off without us — that we should simply “die and decrease the surplus population” as Mr. Dickens so aptly wrote.

Don't blame POTUS. All of us merely “suspect” that he's just the front man. He wakes up every morning knowing it's true. That's got to be tough to face. I've felt sorry for the guy ever since he was elected. He's being manipulated just like all the others who were sold a pig in a poke about all the wonderful things he was going to do with his affirmative action education and community organizing. I think the young ones call it being a "tool".

When it comes down to it, it's just plain hard work and back breaking and heart breaking penance to live a principled life in good standing with God. In the end, faithful acquiesce will have to be enough.
