New York, NY (AHN) - Four young men accused of gang-raping a Hofstra University freshman in a dorm toilet have been released from jail after their alleged victim recanted her charges against them.
Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice told reporters at a news conference Thursday that the 16-year-old student withdrew her story after a lengthy interview with prosecutors late Wednesday.
A lawyer of one of the accused also said the accuser's description of the alleged gang rape does not match with the scene shown on a short cell phone video of the incident taken by a fifth man she accused of raping her.
Following the recantation, Kevin Taveras, 20, Stalin Felipe, 19, Rondell Bedward, 21, and a fourth man arrested shortly after the incident was reported on Sunday were released from jail. The fifth man who was being sought by police when the recantation happened was no longer arrested.
The alleged rape victim, whom Rice only identified as a troubled woman, may be facing charges of making false statements to police. She has been suspended from Hofstra University pending a disciplinary hearing, the school's spokesman said.

This is so terrifying to parents who have sons. Woman and Girls today better start wising up when it comes to reporting rape when it was consensual sex, all it does is hurt women who really are raped. This girl needs jail time and it needs to be on the front page of the paper so that hopefully other women will be deterred from making a false claim.

I’m the guardian of a 17-year old male, and if it was my boy I would be furious. And, having been a victim of sexual assault in the past, I would be highly sceptical.
For her lies she should face as many years in prison as the men she accused.

I don't know about this case of course but sex like that with multiple men is more common than you might think.
More than once I have seen a woman walk into a bar looking for a few good men to have a good time. Something that just about all men that have been active in their youth know is that 2 or more guys can find a woman to have sex with them all fairly easily.
Your concerns for your sons is very frightening and warranted, and should be for any parent.
It is pathetic that in today's world, one cannot even give an innocent hug to a little boy or girl without being afraid of being accused of something. Even at church, I told my husband NEVER EVER even touch a child, and that is very sad.

We are talking about a 16 year old girl here on a campus, not an adult woman cruising bars looking for a wild time.
Any adult woman going into a bar looking for multiple-partnered sex is willingly taking chances. I’m not so sure this is the case here, as many girls and women just give in and have sex to avoid being harmed.
I’m more concerned that at this posting there are people calling this teenager derogatory names rather than looking at the shamefull behavior of four young men.
What I am saying, loud and clear, is that this whole scenario is suspicious. I base that on my years in the U.S.Navy (I was beaten and sexually assaulted by a senior NCO) and my experience working on a crisis hotline.
The majority at this post seem to believe that this girl willingly agreed to go into a campus bathroom with four men and engage in intercourse and then illegally charge them with rape. It may well be that she had no choice in the matter. Rape is very difficult to prove if you’re not beaten nearly to death in the process. Girls and women who fight back are generally found as battered corpses in dumpsters.
The leading cause of death among young girls and women is murder, almost always at the hands of men, and many of those men supposedly loved the girl/woman. Those are the statistics, quite pathetic, when you stop and think about it.

In the case of rape it is very difficult to prove the charges unless a girl/woman resists which of course results in visible injury. The problem with resistance is it tends to enrage rapists who then rape the victim anyway, go ballistic, and beats her to death.
Many women just submit and then live with the guilt and anger the rest of their lives. They blame themselves, not their attacker.
This 16 year old girl charged these four men with rape. She doesn’t have the evidence to prove that crime was committed so the four men will not be charged. I don’t know who is telling the truth, either.
I am only pointing out that there are four, large adult males here versus one 16 year old girl. The odds were never in her favor if she is indeed a victim.
Next time hopefully she will be smarter and avoid the situation which led to this personal disaster.

These days, if you're a single male, you are FAR better off having nothing whatsoever to do with women. It's a landmine out there and if you run into the wrong one your life is effectively over, goodbye.

Rape should be punished severely. False accusations should also be punished. It does show how fare we’ve fallen as a society.
Well, that and it hurts the men who are falsely accused.
You have to deal with the case as it unfolds, you can’t just weave your own imaginary tale, at first it sounded like rape and now it sounds consensual.

That’s a typo in the article. The accuser is 18 (as per Long Island’s newspaper, Newsday).
It is rare today to see a 16-year-old freshman now that schools have stopped allowing kids to skip grades.
I myself was in college at that age, (because I skipped a couple of grades), and while it was unusual, it was not THAT unusual.

No I’m not, you started getting personal with me and insulting me as a father for no reason and I posted some clarifying facts to you, I should have known better though.
It turns out the girl is 18 and luckily the men had some video or else this would have ended badly for them, as it is they will carry this for the rest of their lives and never forget their time in jail with criminals, their futures will forever be tainted if they get in the public eye, such as in politics.
I guess now everyone can relax, except for those that want the women to face prison time.
I was at my first Navy duty station, MCAS Cherry Point NC, long time ago. We were all young and most of us already married or promised. Two of my shipmates got drunk in his room, had sex and woke up in bed the next day. She accused him of rape at the insistence of her boyfriend whose telephone calls she inexcusably missed all night long. After he was busted and put in the Brigg she recanted and made a full statement. The command refused to accept her recant for fear of losing face. he lost his career and his wife and I lost faith.
