OKLAHOMA CITY -- Only one in four Oklahoma public high school students can name the first President of the United States, according to a survey released today.
The survey was commissioned by the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs in observance of Constitution Day on Thursday.
Brandon Dutcher is with the conservative think tank and said the group wanted to find out how much civic knowledge Oklahoma high school students know.

That’s because you can’t rap “Washington” with any kind of rhythm.
Doesn’t matter—he was a racist, slave-owning, warrior male.
Bet they all think global warming is manmade and how to use as condom though
That’s really pathetic.
I wonder what the stats are in other states?
But did they learn important stuff such as how to put a condom on a banana?
Not surprising. None of them is named SOONER.
Yeah, let’s let the average person have a say in how things are run. That’s a good idea!
And people wonder why I’m a monarchist.
Honestly, I’m stunned...I guess schools everywhere have gotten worse..because when I had the opportunity to switch from a California high school to an Oklahoma one, I got the best education ever! This place was strict, still incorporated corporal punishment, strict dress code and high academic standards.. I was no slouch, but I really had to step up my game to keep up. Sorry to see that even my adopted state has gone downhill.
I am guessing that when I went to a normal public HS in the 70’s, probably 95 percent (or more) of the students knew about Washington minimally, and also about the Revolution, Jefferson, Adams, the Civil War, Lincoln, etc.
95 percent (I am accommodating for special cases).
I asked three known democrats (who voted for Gore) at work who the vice president (Cheney) of the country was and all three didn’t know, but they voted in the 2004 election.
It's too bad Mount Vernon wasn't featured on MTV “Cribs’”
One more thing, don't blame the kids, it's the schools and the parents which have failed them, not the other way around.
I wonder what percent an ACORN worker would get?
Lincoln? Ha! Everybody knows it was Kennedy.
How is that different from any other state?
And they used our tax dollars to produce this education....
Basing absolute rule on the identity of a person's father is about as asinine a way of determining governance as imaginable.
So 100% of OK teachers should be fired.
(I’ll bet 100% of the kids can tell you who Miley Cyrus is, though.)
Hey! You gosta understand!...All by design!...Teachers are just building the ideal whack left voting base for future garbage air head candidates
And politicians of all stripes seem to want more $$$ for education and teachers. We’ve got to get back to basics before another generation is lost.
> We’re doomed.
No, Oklahoma is doomed. Remind me not to hire grads from Oklahoma as well.
Bananas are so nineties. They now learn on cucumber.
Lincoln? Ha! Everybody knows it was Kennedy.
I think it was Lincoln, Ford, and Mercury.
Oklahoma public high school students, eh? Well they’re young yet. Most of ‘em aren’t a day over twenty-five. Give ‘em time.
Lincoln? Ha! Everybody knows it was Kennedy.
I think it was Lincoln, Ford, and Mercury.
Whatever, Obama’s our first REAL president anyway, right?

I'm most worried about the 7% that think Obama wrote the Declaration of Independence.

Years ago, when our plant was built, people from Texas came up to staff it.
They were thrilled that the Oklahoma schools were much better than those in Texas!
Meanwhile, Oklahomans were doing their best to get their children in Arkansas schools because they were even better!
Wow. That’s pretty pathetic.
Where do you get the 75% in the posting title that can’t name the first U.S. President, when the first paragraph/sentence says one in four can’t name the first President?
can, not can’t.
Read it again.
Yeah but how many know who Barry Switzer was?
Wow.
I can remember in Grade School how EVERYONE knew the answer to that question. Even in High School, it was rare to find someone who didn’t know.
I guess condom usage and diversity training is more important.
You aren’t from Oklahoma by chance, are you?
Yet even with this isolation, allowing the common person a say in government has resulted in disaster. The common man operates almost entirely on the basis of emotion, and is easy for a demagogue to to manipulate. (Case in point: President Obama.) Rule on the basis of the "will of the people" is in reality rule by the most skillful demagogue.
As for atrocities: no king or emperor in history ever shed blood on the scale of a government by the people. A king's power is limited by the oath he swears to god; in a representative government, vox populi is vox dei, and as such is without limit. Hitler was, after all, an elected leader; Stalin is still loved by millions; the rule of both Mao Zedong and the Dear Leader were and are based largely upon the willing cooperation of millions of "jes' plain folks'. Even in America, we shed innocent blood on a scale that makes the worst excesses of the cruelest czar look like Sunday school. Get back to me when you find a king who allowed fifty million innocent babies to be legally murdered during his reign.
Only reprinting the title as it was printed in the article. The mods would delete it otherwise. :)
I was just kidding but that’s some interesting info. OK is a solid red state so this is a head scratcher..
Of course they know George Washington. They just know him as the dead white slave owner on the dollar bill.
It’s in the article.
“Who was the first President of the United States?” (percent correct) 23%
You must be from Texas.

One in four equals 25%. That means 75% cannot.
Okay...I didn’t read the entire article! Flame me!
And NO! I’m not from OK! Okay?!!!!

My bad! Need to change out my contacts! Need to get back to work! Need to stop reading so much on FreeRepublic!!!!
The graphs in the report show that only 19% answered correctly.
Remember this one?
Guess who is buried in Washington's tomb?
